Bobby Bare - Sylvia's Mother Lyrics
Sylvia's mother says,
"Sylvia's busy, too busy to come to the phone"
Sylvia's mother says,
"Sylvia's trying to start a new life of her own."
Sylvia's mother says,
And the operator says, "Forty cents more
For the nest three minutes."
Please, Mrs. Avery, I just gotta talk to her
I'll only keep her a while
Please, Mrs. Avery, I just want to tell her goodbye, goodbye.
Please, Mrs. Avery, I just want to tell.
Sylvia's mother says,
"Sylvia's packin', shes gonna be leavin' today."
"Sylvia's marryin', a fellow down Galveston way."
Sylvia's mother says
"Please don't say nothin' to make her start cryin' and stay."
And the operator says, "Forty cents more
For the nest three minutes."
Please, Mrs. Avery, I just gotta talk to her
I'll only keep her a while
Please, Mrs. Avery, I just want to tell her goodbye, goodbye.
Please, Mrs. Avery, I just want to tell.
Sylvia's mother says,
"Sylvia's hurryin', she's catchin' the nine o'clock plane."
Sylvia's mother says,
"Take your umbrella, 'cause sylvia it's startin' to rain."
Sylvia's mother says,
"Thank you for callin' and sir, won't you call back again?"
And the operator says, "Forty cents more
For the nest three minutes."
Please, Mrs. Avery, I just gotta talk to her
I'll only keep her a while
Please, Mrs. Avery, I just want to tell her goodbye, goodbye.
Please, Mrs. Avery, I just want to tell...

Bobby Bare Sylvia's Mother Comments
Great!!
Very warm voice love it
I like this version
I like Bobbys way better, Doc Hookmwas good but ya can't beat Bobbys.Anyway for one thing to tell the new generation is country music now will never be as good as the old. The old showed an felt more love an understanding than this new stuff. My opinion. But still there all good in there own way an everyone has there own feelings of the Newman old singers an to top everything everyone COUNTRY MUSIC IS THE BEST THERE AND Ever WILL BE.Even the new country will beat any music out there. This is from an old cowboy out a Montana, The Big Sky Country. Keeper going country folks an singers. Also my brother was a country singer an the night He was suppose to go to Nashvillecan go on the grand oldvopery he got killed in a car wreak, I was 6 yrs old then an still remember seeing him in the casket. I will see him in heaven. Nobody would tell me the drivers name cause I promised to myself an all my friends an family I would kill the man who killed my brother. The driver was going to fast. I'm 69 now an still tear up thinning about my brother Eddie. I will see you one day Ed I promise. I'm the last one of sister's an brothers. Anyway everyone out there always love your friends an family an be kind to everyone even if you dislike them or any reason because some day you my need a friend or help an they will be there for you. I like all races of people, one day they need help an I'm around I'll be there to given a hand. Take care all an love ya all even though I don't know ya your call still great. God Speed
A good singer, but there where better...
Nice version
One of the greatest singers of the twenty century and a great American.
One of the greatest singers of the twenty century.
Lovely !! 💕💕💕💕💕
Mrs. Avery, i can assure you that it will be fine, let him talk.
Shel Silverstein and Bobby Bare... a GREAT combination!
Now you'd have to explain what "40 cents more for the next three minutes" means since you'd be hard pressed to find a pay phone today!
Ahhhhh hell no
Why don't he leave her alone
Ron Mackenzie //. Maybe he could change her mind- if he asked her one more time....
Shel Silverstien wrote this song
Finnnnnnnnnnn
I like this version, but it doesn't have as much passion as the Dr Hook version.
Both versions have their merits, but I prefer Bare's. There is so much heartbreak in his voice, like he's trying not to cry. Hook's sounds a little more forceful, even angry - the passion I believe you referred to. It's remarkable how different artists can change the entire feel of a song, isn't it?
My first thought as well
I agree completely Depcom.
@B Williams I don't really agree, i almost think this one sounds kinda happy in its tone.
The song is a true story real life Sylvia Shel Silverstein loved . .. After the band
had been performing this song for a while, Shel
Silverstein wrote a new version for them called "Sylvia's Father." Only
the end of the song was different, with the last verse changed to:
Sylvia's father says Sylvia's pregnant and you went and made her that
way
Sylvia's father says you motherf--ker I'm gonna kill you someday
At
this point, Dennis Locorriere would do a rant about the no-good
scoundrel that knocked up Sylvia. This version was never recorded. Now

songs with my father's son words of
My girls heard this song in the 80s Bare of course,We used to sing it together. They named an old stray cat Sylvia, couple of litters. She was a better cat than I was a father.Sorry Terra,Tasha
Well sounds like you are still alive so why don't you make up for your short comings now? I bet your girls will give you that second chance that everyone at one time or other needs.Raising my niece was the only honorable thing I did with my life that was my second chance . So be the father you should have been all along now and maybe it is not to late. Good luck brother.
Truly Bobby Bare is one of my favorite country singers after Johnny Cash but, I still favor Dr. Hook's version of this song, which I think, tell's the true feelings of this song. Don't hate me people, Bobby still rocks.
Wow I love this song.

Dr. Hook, made this song famous, I like it a little better, not much though...... Love the Bare〽️🎸🎸
This Bobby Bare ✨
A good one!
Great song. Better than DR. Hook!
no one sings it better then Dr Hook
Great song, Bobby Bare amazing artist
Bobby Bare is one of the greatest song writer of all time. And Bobby can sing too.
To Gerard Larkin Haverstock Esq. Bobby may be a great song writer but he didn't write Sylvia's mother, it was penned by Shel Silverstein.
I love the great song write by Shel Silverstein. How write a number of great song. R.I.P.
I didn't think he wrote that many songs
Gerard Larkin Haverstock Esq me
Bobby's version of the Dr. Hook hit topped out at #12 in 1972, the same year that Hook's did so at #5 on the pop charts. Enjoy!......Mike

this is such a sad song--haven't heard it for a long time never did like Sylvia's mother thought she could have let him talk to her lol
+JT422B Maybe Sylvia didn't want to talk to him.
God bless Bobby Bare. They do not sing like him anymore.
Thanks to you for posting....real true version and Dr. Hook..never hear anything like this anymore
No better performance than from the great Bare!!
I love Bobby Bare, he's a great artist. But no one has ever managed a better performance of this song than this performance by Dr. Hook and the Medicine Show. The heart and soul that was thrown into the performance makes all the difference. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U-3o7bYMRbA
LOVE Bobby but I think that this version can't compare with Dr Hooks..
I've always enjoyed this song,no matter who sang it.This song was written about my sister.Lol

TRULY ............Bobby Bare is one of our MOST treasured assets!
x 1,000,000 yes
wow I love this song
Bobby always got some great songs. !!!!!
Shel Silversteen's Song very good!!
There were several of Bobby Bare's songs that I loved and this is right up near the top of the list. This was back in the day when singers were known by their songs (like the quality of their voice and what the lyrics said) not how sexy their latest video is or how raunchy they could make the lyrics. The lyrics of some of the songs today sort of make me sick to my stomach. I miss the days when I heard a lot of good music on the radio, not just when I played my private collection......
You know THE real Sylvia? that's cool! I've read the story about her.
Great info, I am amazed at the way time keeps the best of music!
Russ
Sad c&w always strikes a chord with me; 'Dear John' I saw too often in the RAF., and I've made hopeless calls to a girl who changed her mind......wonder just how many of us remember when that happened!!
Love everything Bobby sings, a great style of C&W music.
What's funny is that I know that exact Sylvia personally!
now 77 and still sounding great, just saw him 2 nights ago!
Oh, so much better than the Dr. Hooks version I just tried to watch!
Dr. Hooks version is iconic....fantastic, but BBs is great too/
this song resonates with many men who the moms didn't think we were good enough
this has always been a tough song to listen to but always been a good song
Bobby Bare and Petter Øien should have represented Norway under Eurovision Song Contest 2012.
Bare naked best country music !!
Loved this version....thanks for sharing

Thanks for posting.Apparently this song is based on real life, there really was a Sylvia and Shel was in love with her but it was a doomed romance.Sylvia did go away and marry another guy even though Shel phoned her mother begging her to get Sylvia to stay..
U dustydesert
thats lncorrect as anyone who have heard interviews with members of dr hook will know
@sfstoryteller Just seek more for Bobby Bare and you'll find a lot more songs with Shel Silverstein great lyrics. Dr. Hook was only project for him and mostly in Europe. Tho i'm from that side of ocen too, i like more Bobby Bares versions - they sound so simple that really make that Shel's irony really work.
But look for 100000$ In Pennies - it's imho real gem :D
this song always tugs at my heart --mama sounds cold
I always liked Dr Hook's version, ' cause I just did not know Bobby's version and honestly, this is fab, thanks Bobby ! and thanks Wilburscott for posting ! it's now one of my all time COUNTRY favs.
Best version just great
Nice way to take a rock and "countryfi" it - like this version best.
I always liked Bobby Bare.
Bare, 74 years young and still the best!
Me encanta esta canción y bellísima versión yo la tengo Dr jook pero está muy bonita gracias xxxxxxElo
