Bobbie Gentry - Papa, Won't You Let Me Go To Town With You? Lyrics

Papa won't you let me go to town with you
Papa I'm feeling so down and blue
You just gotta come around, please do
Papa won't you let me go to town with you

There's a blue dress at Dindy's I'd give the world to see again
I need some hand lotion and some powder from the five and ten
Buy us some chocolate and I'll make you a pretty pie
If ya don't let me go I'll just die

Papa won't you let me go to town with you
Papa I'm feeling so down and blue
You just gotta come around, please do
Papa won't you let me go to town with you

I gotta pick up a pattern, Aunt Nora's making me a dress
I scrubbed it this morning, what d'ya mean this floor's a mess?
I done everythiing you said, and then some ya didn't say to do
You just gotta take me with you

Papa won't you let me go to town with you
Papa I'm feeling so down and blue
You just gotta come around, please do
Papa won't you let me go to town with you

Looky here papa I found your other Sunday shoe
I shined it and I shined it till it looks all brand spankin' new
Seems like a year I've been waiting for today
If you let me go I won't get in your way

Papa won't you let me go to town with you
Papa I'm feeling so down and blue
You just gotta come around, please do
Papa won't you let me go to town with you

Bobbie Gentry Papa, Won't You Let Me Go To Town With You? Comments
  1. J.... D....

Bobbie could get you in ways Dusty Springfield couldn't.

  2. T.... ....

The South was a mess back then and sill can be. This isn't even delta blues but delta life for a white kid, imagine what it was for a black kid.

    T.... ....

    TheSeeker1960- what?

    T.... ....

    TheSeeker1960, just shut up.

    T.... ....

It's even more of a mess now. The whole country is going down.

Those old orchestra scores are irreplaceable. Those horns are memories for me. Who was the lucky to marry Bobbie?

    M.... A....

I understood at the time she disappeared from music that it was because she married "Harrah" as in owner of the Harrah Casinos. I assumed she sort of "moved up" in her world or somehow that hanged her life!? I don't think it lasted that long. I so loved her and still have the album and the duet album with Glen Campbell. I did get to see her when she toured for her album; and she played at a "night club" --a cocktail club!! I was like 15 and had to ask my mom to take me so i could get in. Thanks, Mom.

  4. E.... M....

I was just out of high school when she exploded on the music scene. I couldn’t get enough

  5. D.... ....

The more I hear her the more I adore her. That with those giant brown eyes and false eye lashes and that rhythmic Martin OOO Guitfiddle.

  6. T.... E....

Summer of 1967. She set the whole world on its ear!

  7. q.... ....

I had all of her stuff back the in my late twenties. Roberta, Bobbie, still a great talent to me!!!

    q.... ....

quantumthunder- I thought you said back in the late twenties and I was like “Bobbie wasn’t even born then and how the hell are you still alive!?” Lmao

  8. A.... M....

Such a talented lady....She wrote and sang her own material (in a voice like melted butter), was an arranger, a multi instrumentalist, a producer, the host of her own television show...hell she made her own stage clothes and painted her own record cover art. Then in 1971 she walked away. That's a class act to follow. Her album The Delta Sweete is a bona fide overlooked classic and her last album Patchwork is as good as anything from the era, like a delta version of Carole King's Tapestry. Bobbie who I hear you say?

  9. J.... ....

It’s 50 years later and as relevant today as then.

  10. M.... C....

She, Elvis, and I were born less than 30 miles apart. Mississippi has instilled so much into us musically. Oops dont forget Tammy in that real estate. Thank God for Mississippi !!!

  11. A.... K....

    Fantastic. What a talent.

  12. K.... R....

    Amazing voice

  13. B.... ....

    Stunning

  14. J.... H....

I only wish that her former record label could undertake a paper retrospective of Bobbie Gentry's career. Wouldn't it be nice to have all her albums properly re-issued and made easily available. Also, I wonder whether there are any alternative versions of the songs. Most sound fantastic as they are available, but I wonder if there are early acoustic versions just Bobbie's guitar and that beautiful, beautiful voice. Sadly under-rated but I hope she will get the recognition she deserves one day soon.

    J.... H....

The Girl from Chickasaw County box set is out now!

  15. N.... H....

I Freakin' love this song, it is so lovely.... As is the singer. I have a Big crush on Bobbie...Shame I was born in a different era and Country !!

  16. d.... ....

Love this. Gotta hear more now.

  17. j.... ....

    This is fantastic.......

  18. V.... F....

bobbie had IT...and IT can't be beaten

  19. S.... M....

    Great Song!

  20. N.... S....

She was the act and look that I think Shania Twain does, I remember some of the articles written about her(Bobbie) clothes on the show's. Look at some of the other videos ,"Nikkie Hokkie " for example I remember when Shaina had the same kinda look and Nashville thought it was all over. What? A belly button? Nothing wrong with either one of these women I'm just reminiscing. But I also think that Bobbie never got her recognition. She really deserved.

  21. J.... S....

Bobby disappeared, she got screwed by the Industry....living in La, so they say. ..

    J.... S....

she's back where she grew up.

    J.... S....

At least she got songwriters and other credits for Ode to Billy Joe before pulling the plug. She literally planned that and did that as her parting gesture.

    J.... S....

I believe she resides in Tennesee

  22. M.... K....

A sophisticated lady if there ever was one. She's got jazz elements in this tune. Nice!!

  23. T.... M....

belkin59: For your information; Thank you very, very, very much !!!!!

  24. B.... B....

Her stories are so amazing, so real!! My favorite singer!! I remember being so upset when I heard she married that Spiders and Snakes Guy! I thought she'd wait for me!!

    B.... B....

    Bruce Baldwin Nope...Me !!! Not you !!😁

    B.... B....

Well she's been married 3 times and never for more than 2 years in any one marriage. So you both still have a chance. Not sure with that track record you'd want one

  25. K.... B....

Wow! What an awesome video. Thanks for sharing this.

  26. G.... T....

From all reports, Bobbie is still alive and looking great at age 74. And still living in the South, although I imagine she can go "to town" any time she wants these days, without having to wait for any Papa. I agree, she was a sadly underrated talent in her day.

  27. N.... ....

I remember these BBC shows when I was an impressionable teen. Indeed, it's an indelible impression. Back then, video tape was expensive and tapes were wiped. Today, that looks like cultural vandalism as now everything can be filmed and most of it is instantly forgettable while those shows were amazing and mostly gone. Every now and then little snippets surface- some naughty man taking a tape home from the studio or discovered in storage in faraway places that bought the BBC's output. I just wonder who is out there, today, who could make an impact like Bobby did all those years ago?

  28. S.... M....

Never seen her in person, But i also have always been in LOVE with this angel.

    S.... M....

    Stephen Morgan She's mine...shove off !! lol...

  29. B.... B....

Can't believe it's been 47 years!! Loved heard first time I heard Bobbie! Then I saw her!! Oh my God, I'm in Love!!

    B.... B....

Me too,she is gorgeous on this. She seems so innocent. This was the year I was born.1968.that means she will be 71 this year.I heard she has been away from publicity since 1981.

  30. P.... C....

    Brilliant..

    P.... C....

Agree. Must be the sheer simplicity & realism of this folk song that makes for it's brilliance. Van Morrison saw the need to "got to get back to base". https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ifapQh_-dCc

  31. c.... ....

This lady was so under-rated it's pathetic.  One of the best talents of our time.

  32. H.... K....

one of the greatest I ever heard.

  33. S.... J....

    She was a great singer!!!

  34. j.... ....

Hello--I am fifty years old and often need to escape the 2014 world we live in.  I stumbled into the Bobbie Gentry history and found your beautiful posting.  This performance is priceless and superior to the version on her album.  The subtle voice inflections and big band backup really make me appreciate the old school touch.  She knew exactly what she was projecting using the perfect feminine touch.  (There is a pleasant absence of hippie grunge).  You have provided us with the best available performance of this song and I appreciate it very much (what a classic and beautiful piece of history).  How could the BBC possibly have destroyed thirteen of the eighteen shows produced?  I have been hoping to find her 1978 visit on the Tonight Show... .  History is usually an accurate judge of real talent and elevates it to its proper standing.  I hope one day she will be formally and appropriately recognized.  Have a great day and thank you again.

    j.... ....

I escaped the 2014 world, and reappeared in 2015.Oh how I pine for the days of 2014 again.Yes I agree she is a talented and beautiful woman, indeed.

    j.... ....

jlcaver it been three year later did you found yourself in this world?

  35. i.... ....

Everyone I knew was talking about this drop-dead gorgeous and talented woman! I wonder what her life turned out to be like and where is she now? I imagine she is still a beauty with lots to say!

  36. b.... ....

    Complete genius.

  37. T.... B....

    Awesome! Never gets old.

  38. T.... B....
