Bob Dylan - Two Soldiers Lyrics

He was just a blue-eyed Boston boy
His voice was low with pain
"I'll do your bidding comrade mine
If I ride back again
But if you ride back and I am left
You'll do as much for me
Mother you know, must hear the news
So write to her tenderly."

"She's waiting at home like a patient saint
Her fond face pale with woe
Her heart will be broken when I am gone
I'll see her soon, I know"
Just then the order came to charge
For an instant hand touched hand
They said "Aye" and away they rode
That brave and devoted band.

Straight was the track to the top of the hill
The rebels they shot and shelled
Plowed furrows of death through the toilling ranks
And guarded them as they fell
There soon came a horrible dying yell
From heights that they could not gain
And those whom doom and death had spared
Rode slowly back again.

But among the dead that were left on the hill
Was the boy with the curly hair
The tall dark man who rode by his side
Lay dead beside him there
There's no one to write to the blue-eyed girl
The words that her lover had said
Momma, you know, awaits the news
And she'll only know he's dead.

This song appears on the album "World Gone Wrong" released in 1993, but Bob played it live since 1988. As General Sherman said "War is Hell".

yeah, this song portrays the humanity of it, those little pieces of the people's lives, what it means, how it feels and what's too much to feel.

i actually have that album and have listened to it once---i got my first dylan album in 1963 late, shoplifted the freewheelin album when i was 14, us kids had never heard him, just 2 peter paul and mary songs. thought his name was pronounced dye-lin. we wanted to hear him so bad. the album was in the generic folk section. that was before he had his own section. i got all the studio albums after that, not shoplifting. just bought or permanently borrowed---until, Slow Train was the last one i got and then i stopped getting albums, CDs were starting to take over and i couldn't afford them, i had a baby daughter on welfare and was mainly into disney music for a long time there. On cassette.

fast forward to 2016, on Amazon i saw this complete Dylan album collection through Tempest for $149, i'd seen it before for $200, it was on my wish list, but for $149 i pulled the trigger on a credit card and got it, prime shipping, and when it arrived, i listened to everything in 3 days. World Gone Wrong is great, it was good to listen to those albums, they way the music wandered and journeyed, one after another, and i had never heard most of them. Good As I Been To You and World Gone Wrong came out surprisingly, so fresh, traditional acoustic .

i thought 2 Soldiers sounded vaguely familiar but i didn't remember hearing it. i've been slowly uploading all of those CDs to my computer which is the preferred mode of access, digital at your fingertips. that's why you tube is a way of life, the treasure trove daily adventure.

With those those 41 albums in the CD collection, came a CD sized hard cover book, 250+ pages, including all the liner notes from every album and artwork, and other info about how each album came about and how it was produced. At the beginning of that book, at the top of the first printed page, i just noticed, it quotes Dylan as saying

"songs are supposed to be heroic enough to give the illusion of stopping time." That's what this song does, exactly.

thanks for all your beautiful selections

@Jefferson Davis Also known a "Blue-eyed Boston boy."

@jaw444 I was the absolutt first to dig Dylan in this part of Norway way back in 63, and I guessed I lost my chance on many girls therefore. They did not like him..or me..

2:55 Little mistake: Should be "none" instead of "non". Sorry.

Thank you Jeff. This song got me thinking how many mothers lost their sons in those sensless wars. Behind every war there is greed for money and power.

  5. T.... R....

The horror story of war, the utter waist and futility of it all.

Thank you Jefferson Davis for song & for history. I visited Fredericksburg battle grounds and was inspired by story & monument to “The Angel of Marye’s Heights'. https://www.atlasobscura.com/places/monument-to-the-angel-of-marye-s-heights

Another introduction to a old but new song for me. As one mother I would do anything to stop my children going to war, but the community always sees diffrent. As to me war comes in many forms. Great example of how not to live Thankyou for sharing of hope 🌅🌈
