Bob Dylan - She Belongs To Me Lyrics

She's got everything she needs
She's an artist, she don't look back
She's got everything she needs
She's an artist, she don't look back
She can take the dark out of the nighttime
And paint the daytime black

You will start out standing
Proud to steal her anything she sees
You will start out standing
Proud to steal her anything she sees
But you will wind up peeking through her keyhole
Down upon your knees

She never stumbles
She's got no place to fall
She never stumbles
She's got no place to fall
She's nobody's child
The Law can't touch her at all

She wears an Egyptian ring
It sparkles before she speaks
She wears an Egyptian ring
It sparkles before she speaks
She's a hypnotist collector
You are a walking antique

Bow down to her on Sunday
Salute her when her birthday comes
Bow down to her on Sunday
Salute her when her birthday comes
For Halloween buy her a trumpet
And for Christmas get her big drum

Bob's voice and Arlo's sound almost identical....both great.

This Is THE MASTERS BEST 🙏🏾🥰

  9. K.... T....

".... she wears an egyptian ring.... it sparkles before she speaks."
one of dylan's most beautiful - and most cynical - lines.

    K.... T....

Why cynical? Sounds mystical to me.

    K.... T....

@Anna Vajda hello ! thank you for reacting. well, i think, the song is abound with caustic irony and at least mild mockery, as you can find so often in dylan's texts. i appreciate dylan's poetry very much, especially his caustic humour. but - as with every poetry - it's all up to one's personal hermeneutics. regards from austria !

  10. R.... D....

My favourite Dylan song - a perfect syncretism of melody, rhythm with perfect poetry. A perennial favourite. You can even dance to it

  11. J.... C....

But you will wind up peeking through a keyhole down upon your knees...brilliant

    J.... C....

    Her key hole.

  12. F.... a....

    Yeah, Uncle Zimmy. Nothin' like'm.

  13. D.... L....

    you're a walking antque

  14. b.... ....

Joan Baez said that during this period, the songs just poured out of him. Hard to imagine lyrics like this just pouring out. What an amazing artist in an amazing time. It was the perfect convergence of poet, history, culture and place.

  15. D.... O....

My favorite Dylan song ever. The lyrics are like nothing I've ever heard before or since. I devoted this song to a girlfriend of mine a long time ago. I held on to her for as long as I could, but deep down knew it wouldn't last. God, I miss her.

    D.... O....

    An anthem from my youth
    Trouble and strife
    A distant life
    Distant memories
    Flash back smiles......

  16. R.... C....

Another of Dylan's greatest, also done amazingly well by Rick Nelson a few years later!

  17. l.... ....

D.A. Pennebaker, made the documentary, ‘Don’t Look Back,’ touring with Bob, in the early ‘60’s, hand-held cam, b/w, is really worth a watch, about that time, that i didn’t see until 1996 ! Helped me a lot, having been a child, in the early ‘60’s, myself... This song could go on forever, ey ? lol✌️💜

  18. T.... M....

'She a hypnotist collector, you are a walking antique'

  19. M.... W....

Was playing this when my son came into the kitchen. "Dad, who's this?" "It's Bob Dylan." He has a few Dylan songs on his playlist, but didn't recognize his voice cause this is much slower than the Dylan songs he knows. This will be on his playlist by tonight. He just turned fifteen. I smile inside. Sharing great music with him is one of my greatest joys.

    M.... W....

    Awesome, such an awesome song!

    M.... W....

ahhh ! must be so great to share your favourite music - mixed up with so much personal sentiment - with your teenage son.

  20. K.... M....

The eternal muse, confounded with a person.
And Cecilia wasn't a bed hopper either.

  21. D.... M....

    Love you Steve

  22. M.... ....

this song makes me think of such specific girls I remember

  23. G.... F....

    STEAL HER ANYTHING SHE NEEDS

  24. v.... f....

I know alot of people trip on Dylan's voice but he is one of the greatest song writers of all time and extremely talented , to be able to come up with the music melodies and lyrics is gift few have

  25. D.... E....

This song is somehow generous and brutal at the same time

    D.... E....

I always think one of its themes is that of jealousy destroying love.

  26. M.... B....

Peeking through a keyhole on your knees is no position any man should ever assume. It's just like a woman to have that effect on a defenseless fellow.

    M.... B....

Men get on their knees darling

  27. a.... ....

    "She's a Hypnotist collector".

  28. A.... D....

She's got everything she needs, she's an artist
    She don't look back

  29. D.... G....

I've got everything I need and I don't look back....

  30. B.... M....

    my thoughts remain
    that cannot be tamed
    as i greet every morning
    before me i saw
    an open door
    opportunities surround me

  31. W.... p....

My dad played this to me I love bob.

  32. B.... M....

    something tells me
as i switch off the tv
    that this is one song
    that truly belongs
    in my vocabulary
    i saw that Egyptian ring
    i saw a Pharoah grin
as he handed it to me

  33. T.... O....

One of Dylan's mystical songs from a life's work of mystique. I will go on record that for me...The Sixties Music was dominated by Mr. D. Better than the Beatles...imagine that. If I had to live on a desolate island I would take Bob Dylan's collected works....and my wife, too. Word. And yes, I am a Baby Boomer just 5 years younger than Mr. D and I fucking know what I am talking about.

    T.... O....

...if you had your wife and bobs music the island wouldnt be deserted for long

  34. R.... U....

Change, "she" to "he" and it describes every player ever. Both sexes can be an hypnotist collector.

    A.... J....

    it doesnt matter moron

  36. M.... B....

Françoise Hardy do adore this song! I agree...

  37. C.... Z....

Say about Dylan what you will, but what he did in those years is pure art. Plain and simple.

  38. W.... B....

Just one of the many reasons, THIS IS BOB'S BEST ALBUM.

    W.... B....

For me, this one and blood on the tracks

  39. I.... K....

    She's nobody's child...

  40. J.... S....

Not one in a hundred has even a clue as to what this song is about! See an explanation further down.

  41. b.... m....

what else can i say....he has a way of expressing "love" in lyrics, and melody like no other !

  42. b.... m....

even my dad loved his music and lyrics, and he was from the older generation....sometimes he'd laugh, sometimes say so profound !

  43. i.... ....

  53. R.... ....

One of my favorites. I've heard it or read that Dylan can't sing, can't play guitar, etc. I love him!

  54. T.... B....

Ever played at the Egyptian Theatre Bob? https://egyptiantheatre.net/ I saw Sam Bush and Del McCoury play there once or twice. I really don't like Boise a whole lot, but that theater is something else, along with Kathryn Albertson Park. That park is a good example of what women should do with their men's money. People I think wanted to equalize everyone, to make them all the same class- that really is what communism and to a certain extent democracy is all about- but if you didn't have rich people then who would get paid to build their houses and swimming pools and golf courses? To mow the lawn? To watch the gate? If everyone is equal then no one has a yard bigger than 1/4 acre and you never get parks like Kathryn Albertson Park built. No one else has that kind of money. And sure, there are a lot of public parks already in Boise- owned by the city- but none are quite as beautiful, nor take as good of wedding photographs as Kathryn Albertson Park. Long after the supermarket chain itself has passed into bankruptcy, the ponds will still have ducks and the shady trees will still grow.

  55. T.... B....

I have many rings. Do I have an Egyptian one? Part of what is being robbed in China and sold on the market without provenance and for a fraction of their value is the bridge between east and west. I have ones that have hieroglyphs and scarabs that are not Egyptian, but from this bridge between east and west. It is easy to see by looking at them these people talked to each other! A lot! https://tibetanholocaust.wordpress.com/the-hall-of-enslaved-idols/muhammad/ And severed is this historical link today as the tombs and archaeological remains are looted and destroyed forever. For it is a ring that has words that show after being put into fire, who speaks of a Dark Lord bent upon total world domination...

    T.... B....

A fraction of their value? What should be the going rate for Chinese artifacts? We need a new Overstreet guide for this. Bimonthly.

    T.... B....

If you don't have an Egyptian ring, you are really poor! A good chance that you have on in your wallet. Take it out and see how it sparkles-talks.

    T.... B....

IF you lived in those days, there were amazing artisan jewelry stores, usually in the free stores, or the free press stands, and often there were silver hand made rings with Native American stones and a tiny piece of glass, or maybe tiny diamond chips that actually did shine as your fingers moved. American art student made....not stolen art.........

  56. T.... B....

At one point I totally rewrote this song- but I think the best version was incinerated in a fire. "She's the hardest, she don't cook jack!" Is all I remember from it now.

  60. z.... s....

    What a great simple tune

  61. v.... ....

She sounds fun. I'd like to know her.

    v.... ....

I think it was beyond fun. The song was rumored to have been about Joan Baez. She and her Mother had gone to jail for civil disobedience for standing up for farm workers, for standing up for civil rights for all, and for denouncing the draft and the war, nothing political, but because at that time, around the country, many high schools, such as ours, in a large suburban city in California had the seniors drafted and processed before graduation and as soon as the caps hit the ground, and the prom limo was turned back in.....off they went to boot camp. Many were in country combat by September. In our school over 700 young men, their last known address the US Military......when the city raised hell, the military stopped drafting large groups together and then the draft lottery started and boot camps were draftees from all over...........to keep the people from being pissed, NOT for any other reason. God forgive America ......at any rate, Joan was a short term alleged love of Bob, and a lifetime friend. Buffy Saint Marie, another lifetime friend of Bob, and also very active in civil rights, native rights, and women's rights as well as farm worker rights was another guess as to who inspired the song.

    v.... ....

    You already do.

  62. v.... m....

I'm listening to this song since I was a boy.I love it. Thanks Bob.

  63. T.... H....

"You'll wind up peeking through her keyhole, down upon your knees."

    *cough cough cough*

    T.... H....

And if ya didn't catch it, that's probably him alluding to Sarte's theory of shame, the example being a young boy is caught looking through a keyhole, watching his prostitute mother doing her job. Just a guess though.

    T.... H....

@Ben Parasch Didn't know that, thanks for the info.
I always thought it was a lack of trust, " She belong to me" speaks of ownership, and if you think you possess something and it is yours alone, at some point you are going to worry about it being stolen, and guard it jealousy.

No reason it can't be both. :)

    T.... H....

I'm sorry you havent gotten laid. I'm just getting those " I haven't had good sex vibes variety

  68. M.... N....

my favorite song of all times.

    Dylan you are the greatest

  69. J.... R....

"She can take the dark out of the nighttime and paint the daytime black" I love that line. I don't quite know what it's supposed to mean, but I get it.

    J.... R....

My guess is that not one in a hundred knows what this song is about!

    J.... R....

"She's got everything she needs": The USA., immensely wealthy in resources. "She's an artist": a con artist. "She don't look back"; She does not reflect on the path she took to got to this point in time. "She'll take the dark out of the night time": like a battlefield at night, with flares, high explosives, etc.. "And paint the daytime black": via napalm. This is during the Indo China War in Vietnam. "You will start out standing, proud": "Standing Proud", US Marine motto. "To steal her anything she sees": General Smedley Butler said it was part of his job in Nicaragua, in the '30's to protect United Fruit Companies assets. And protect other corporate interests around the globe. "And you will wind up peeping through a keyhole down upon your knees": Think Mi Lie Massacre, if you get caught and serve time in the brig where your only view of the outside world is what can be seen through the keyhole. "Bow down to her on Sunday": go to many churches and see an American flag at the platform in the front of the pews. "Salute her when her birthday comes": July 4th, Independence Day fireworks celebrations. " She's a hypnotist collective": got to school 12 years, or more and get fully indoctrinated. "You are a walking antique": Your concepts of the USA may be what you were taught in school? "For Halloween, give her a trumpet": a noise maker, or some such. "For Christmas, give her a drum"; drums were a more popular Christmas gifts, many decades ago?
If you got a better translation, I'd love to see it.

    J.... R....

"She has an Egyptian ring, it sparkles before she speaks": take that dollar bill out of your pocket, see "the Egyptian" ring. "It sparkles": money talks. "She's nobody's child": she gave birth to herself via "The Declaration of Independence", July 4th, 1776. 'the law can't touch her at all": no power strong enough to bring her to court. IMO, this is Dylan's most enigmatic song and one of his very best.

    J.... R....

@John Stauffer It is very clear, she can bring light into a dark time, and can harm the heart to where the day seems to go dark. It was said this song was written for Joan Baez after a brief affair with Bob.

    J.... R....

@John Stauffer While your thoughts are interesting, I am O L D, and from the coffee house and Griffith Park, Washington DC, and Haight and Berkeley BE IN days.....Bob was around, just singing and chatting, not like rock stars of today.........the thought was that the song was for Joan Baez.......or possibly inspired by either Joan, or Buffy Saint Marie or others who were very active in positive movements and kept themselves out of jail in what can often be described as miracles..............I felt "she's got everything she needs" was a reference to the fact that these strong women did NOT need a man to take care of them, in fact, they stood up and did things most men were afraid to stand up for...........She's an artist, was again, about either Joan or Buffy, both were artists in many genre............she don't look back.......women who did not spend the rest of their lives when they had the strength to walk away.....no regrets. God bless.

  70. J.... B....

Such a perfect song, from the lovely interaction of the upright bass and Bruce Langhorne's lead guitar to the unconventional vocal phrasing to the poetic, devotional words. One of my favorite Bob Dylan songs and arguably in the upper echelon of love songs of the last century of American music.

  71. A.... ....

Great song about (I think) Joan Baez. I wonder how she felt when she heard it?

    A.... ....

Probably tired of Bobby writing songs about her.

    A.... ....

Alpha. It could have been Joan Baez. Whoever the song was for it was definitely about putting a women on a pedestal.

  72. J.... K....

    She belongs to me too..

    J.... K....

    Love it!!!!

  73. G.... H....

    Perfect title

  74. I.... ....

I'm not sure why but this always was a favorite of mine

    I.... ....

It was a favorite of mine because several people, notably my high school sweetheart before ehe was drafted, and my ex husband both said it was how they felt about me! AND I could play and sing the song.......open mic nights, and the big be in's in Griffith Park and Oakland, Berekely and San Francisco. Those days when it was about FOR peace and to save our own young men from the draft and death for a war no one knew what it was about and the soldiers were coming home even more confused than before they went as to what it was about.............and FOR love and peace in this world......the end to war we were promised World War II would bring.

    I.... ....

You know why...just think about it : )

    I.... ....

    @John Lang syncopation?

    I.... ....

    Because it's brilliant?

    I.... ....

I am a painter, so i feel like this song belongs to me a little
