Bob Dylan - Sad Eyed Lady Of The Lowlands Lyrics

With your mercury mouth in the missionary times
And your eyes like smoke and your prayers like rhymes
And your silver cross, and your voice like chimes
Oh, who do they think could bury you?

With your pockets well protected at last
And your streetcar visions which you place on the grass
And your flesh like silk, and your face like glass
Who could they get to carry you?

Sad-eyed lady of the lowlands
Where the sad-eyed prophet says that no man comes
My warehouse eyes, my Arabian drums
Should I put them by your gate
Or, sad-eyed lady, should I wait?

With your sheets like metal and your belt like lace
And your deck of cards missing the jack and the ace
And your basement clothes and your hollow face
Who among them can think he could outguess you?

With your silhouette when the sunlight dims
Into your eyes where the moonlight swims
And your match-book songs and your gypsy hymns
Who among them would try to impress you?

Sad-eyed lady of the lowlands
Where the sad-eyed prophets say that no man comes
My warehouse eyes, my Arabian drums
Should I put them by your gate
Or, sad-eyed lady, should I wait?

The kings of Tyrus with their convict list
Are waiting in line for their geranium kiss
And you wouldn't know it would happen like this
But who among them really wants just to kiss you?

With your childhood flames on your midnight rug
And your Spanish manners, and your mother's drugs
And your cowboy mouth and your curfew plugs
Who among them do you think could resist you?

Sad-eyed lady of the lowlands
Where the sad-eyed prophets say that no man comes
My warehouse eyes, my Arabian drums
Should I leave them by your gate
Or, sad-eyed lady, should I wait?

Oh, the farmers and the businessmen they all did decide
To show you where the dead angels are that they used to hide
But why did they pick you to sympathize with their side?
How could they ever mistake you?

They wished you'd accepted the blame for the farm
But with the sea at your feet and the phony false alarm
And with the child of the hoodlum wrapped up in your arms
How could they ever have persuaded you?

Sad-eyed lady of the lowlands
Where the sad-eyed prophets say that no man comes
My warehouse eyes, my Arabian drums
Should I leave them by your gate
Or, sad-eyed lady, should I wait?

With your sheet-metal memory of Cannery Row
And your magazine husband who one day just had to go
And your gentleness now, which you just can't help but show
Who among them do you think would employ you?

Now you stand with your thief, you're on his parole
With your holy medallion and your fingertips now that fold
And your saintlike face and your ghostlike soul
Who among them could ever think it could destroy you?

Sad-eyed lady of the lowlands
Where the sad-eyed prophets say that no man comes
My warehouse eyes, my Arabian drums
Should I leave them by your gate
Or, sad-eyed lady, should I wait?

Bob Dylan Sad Eyed Lady Of The Lowlands Comments
  1. r.... c....

As for his detractors as a vocalist, I submit this is very well sung, very well presented.

  2. B.... D....

    Our poet Laureate

  3. P.... J....

Bob became a Believer in the 80's. He will be singing for eternity with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ

  4. s.... h....

    Beautiful.

  5. O.... D....

I bought this album and played it 50 times to learn and love the meaning. I was sad eyed. In 2019 I II play his albums on the stereo. All of my CD’s were stolen by a geek that omly had Beatles..

  6. M.... C....

The organ background is just extraordinary. Would love to know who the keyboardist was. IMHO this song would always be powerful but not as much so without the organ track. Maybe one of the best songs ever. I loved it fifty years ago and can listen to it over and over again. It is a reminder of a time when there was a feeling of boundless optimism and change which sadly hasn't been present since. Thank you Bob Dylan

  7. M.... S....

The prophet said that this song has a good melody and a good arrangement, but, also, that's truly irritating if you do not have much time to spend, the lieutenant is calling for a new assault on the trench, and you didn't sleep enough last night.

  8. B.... D....

Is this one of the four or five greatest songs ever written? YES!!

  9. J.... B....

Love how the album cover shot was slightly out of focus, but Dylan liked it.

  10. F.... D....

Masterpiece... Has been one of my favorite Dylan song since I first heard it.

  11. n.... ....

Used to put this on the old record player when going to bed that would stop itself off, was the best way that ever was to get to sleep and wake up whit a good feeling........20 then 70 now!

  12. k.... j....

I read in the Holy Bible, a verse about all the prophets of God arrive ! All the songs and music arrived.
My favourite is the the symphony, appreciation for everyone s , talent and contripution , utilization .

  13. j.... ....

where's my comment gone? bob has never played this live.

  14. J.... A....

The Most Beautiful Song Ever! And Darkness@

  20. R.... J....

  21. A.... T....

Just wish it was a tad longer.

  22. G.... T....

"...killing me softly with his song."

  23. D.... C....

This makes me think of the love of my life who died 32 yrs ago...Jesus it still feels like yesterday. When people commit suicide they don't know the pain left for others to endure. Everyday for 32 yrs I have wondered what I could have done

    D.... C....

I think part of the irony is when I look at Dylan I see my James. He had wild curly hair, that he called his Jew Fro, and gorgeous electric blue eyes. My Sweet Goddess, I was so in love with that beauiful, gentle soul😢

  24. C.... D....

Dead Angels they used to hide. This song chokes me up. Bob Dylan and the throat chakra, heavy. I would really love to be friends with Bob . I would love to discuss God,The nature of reality, consciousness, the multiverses, sonic harmonies, symbols ,l linguistics, mythology, folklore, belief systems, science, politics,I can dream🌀💕❤️🧡💛💚💙💜💓💞💕🤓🦋🌞🌈🍀🌻🎺🙌🏻♥️🕯♥️🌊🧜🏾‍♀️🐬💙🧬💙🧬💙💚💙💜💙🕊😇🌀

My Father, a Vietnam Veteran, and among the Angels now, loved to play this song every time we spent time together. I swear this is one of Bob's best songs yet.

    So very beautiful and haunting.

  34. E.... T....

...and your saint like face, and your ghost like soul

  35. R.... D....

Was there copy right issues on this ?

  36. M.... R....

Hard to believe he wrote this and Idiot Wind about the same person.

    M.... R....

    Good point. :) Love, ha...

    M.... R....

    Ok.. I don’t know.. who?

    M.... R....

And I Want You, and Wedding Song, and a few others.

    M.... R....

Edie Sedgwick was Dylan's muse. There are pictures of her on Google images. He mixed in a little Joanie and Sarah at times on this piece. Sarah is all over "Sad Eyed," but Edie is in there too (and Joan Baez). Remember "You went to the finest schools alright, but you only used to get juiced in it."? If you look at Edie Sedgwick's bio on Wikipedia, her adult life starts out at an Ivy League college where she drops out and moves in down the hall from Dylan at the Chelsea Hotel. Dylan"s songwriting is all Edie with a strong dose of hatred for Edie's other beau, Andy Warhol. Another crack up is that when he recorded this in Nashville, he didn't tell the sidemen players about the song length -- and they kept trying to do a buildup thinking the end was coming! This implies that this is take one.

  37. A.... R....

    Baez version. End of.

  38. V.... M....

I see this as a poem about one of his Psychedelic Trips, or an entity. And definitely not about some lady. Atleast In my conscience.

  39. J.... L....

    Epic love song

  40. S.... S....

Dunno why it makes my heart ache, though I don't completely understand all the metaphors...

But 'my warehouse eyes' may mean that he can never have a complete look on his girl; there is always more room... :)
'My Arabian drums'... his heartbeat, maybe? The music of his life....
Should I leave them at your gate, or should I wait?
(Maybe waiting for her to return his love?)

I don't know... the enigma of this song makes it all the more alluring. Somehow, it would lose its charm if explained completely....

  41. H.... 9....

Hooo this is so depressing 😭😭😭

  42. j.... s....

anyone remember radio caroline kiss in the car. this masterpiece was a favorite,

  43. S.... a....

Can you imagine when she heard this? Then stood on the bank when the sun died and the melody played in her mind..
The woman who scorned Dylan and forced him to look at himself in the ways we never want to but have to on a dark day. Playing the game of love that is inescapable to us all.

  44. J.... T....

From the first album I bought of the master still treasure it today ❤️

  45. I.... ....

Its boisterous and vulnerable at the same time. I think that categorizes Bob Dylan in the 60s and makes him so approachable. Stay strong

  46. E.... M....

correct me if I’m wrong but I think Dylan once called this the best song he ever wrote

    E.... M....

He told his entourage that as he exited (or entered, I can't remember) the recording studio.

  47. D.... C....

That harmonica at the end...that fucking harmonica...as if this song wasn't good enough. Thanks Bob for giving us one of the best songs ever. The whole Blonde On O Blonde album is pure magic.

  48. K.... C....

Love you my bob ❤️❤️❤️🙏 YOU ARE ONE IN A ZIIIION!!!! 💕❤️💋🙏

  49. B.... P....

Φιλαράκι όλα τα τραγούδια σε θυμίζουν!!

  50. C.... O....

    Oh my GOD

    Dylan really is God!

  51. W.... O....

What an unbelievable song. And Bob Dylan was only 25 years old when he wrote this.. Jesus fucking christ

  52. A.... M....

Dylan doesn't get enough credit for his genius harmonica playing.

  53. T.... T....

I heard this song when I was 12 and spent the rest of my life looking for my own Sad Eyed Lady. Don't know whether to thank Bob or curse him. Certainly the greatest love song ever written.

  54. C.... F....

a legend. Bob Dylan is awesome.

  55. J.... S....

    Echoes of sincerity

  56. J.... S....

Unforgiveness poisons the wells of your very souls

  57. B.... A....

I use this song to torture my buddy at work who doesn't like Dylan

    B.... A....

    Shame on you Boris.

    B.... A....

Buckets of rain annoys some people.

  58. L.... E....

Parece más un semidios q un mortal. INCOMPARABLE

  59. R.... d....

The best new music I have heard lately, this guy should go far.

    R.... d....

Yes, now if only we had the means to share this across the seas.

  60. c.... b....

One of the most poignant and beautiful songs I I have ever heard!

  61. F.... S....

Haha I see lots of Dylan freaks in the comments (I'm saying this in an affectionate manner)... As far as I'm concerned, being a fan of Joanie, I only knew her version, and it's only version I've ever heard for 22 years... You can find it on Joan Baez's Any Day Now, songs of Bob Dylan... And it's much better, in my opinion... Ok, I'm out! lol

    F.... S....

Anyone who loves Bob has already heard it a thousand and one times before and generally has good humor about it. Bob said Joanie was heavenly when she sang. Just that her Poetry was shit. LOL>

  62. M.... Z....

    Only BOB ...

  63. J.... 1....

I have the 1966 Blonde On Blonde vinyl 12" album...one of my prized posessions!

  64. G.... F....

That harmonica solo at the end. My favorite

  65. E.... B....

Cant get local station wmgk to play this too long but can play meatloaf anytime bunch of lameos

    E.... B....

Of course. Fm alternative radio as we once knew it is history. Sucks... but it's basically gone.

    E.... B....

If you are old enough to remember muzak(elevator music) or a m radio the same songs all day long a ton of commercials and a bunch of talking in between songs!

    E.... B....

@Eileen Blau Then I guess you love today's radio with the high powered voices of the disc jockey's who are gonna "get you through your work day!" They actually played album cuts that we would request on original alternative FM. There was a small window of purity. I admit--it vanished pretty quickly, but it was there. And cuts from Blonde on Blonde were part of that playlist.

  66. m.... b....

    Dylan's masterpiece ❤

    m.... b....

One of the many. Definitely one of my favorites

  67. p.... ....

    Error in fourth line of lyrics. Should be:;
Oh who did they think could compare to you?

  68. m.... ....

I'm nearly crying listening to this on here so thanks, I have had this Album as a double LP when it first came out, which is now worn out, and as a well played CD which I had to put on my lap top to stop me waring that out too, every track is a pure classic

  69. N.... G....

He never played this song in a concert...

  70. b.... w....

One of his dumbest and greatest songs.

  71. f.... ....

You all remember when Bowie died, all the noise it made worldwide? When Dylan will die we will recall how a gigantic poet he is. And we will miss him so much...

    f.... ....

    He will NEVER die.

  72. L.... Q....

one of the most beautiful song of all time

  73. Y.... K....

3:55 "or sad eyed lady should I wait" the way he sings that line is what falling in love feels like.

  74. G.... G....

Every time I listen to a Bob Dylan song on this channel, I look for the "best Bob Dylan song" comment. Never fails.

  75. C.... B....

So Beautiful. Reminds me of my Grandmother Emily O'Riaum, from the lowlands. Her and my dad had those big brown eyes.....

  76. L.... D....

imo Joan Baez did this better--the only song of Dylan she did justice too, and what a knockout job she did of it

  77. K.... M....

What a love song to Sara Lownds written by one of the greatest poets . Thank you whoever put this incredible song here . Dylan , ....who can compare ? Rave on forever Mr. Zimmerman your lyrics are spiritual and reach deep into the soul to touch it with emotion thought and Love .

  78. j.... ....

he has never done this live.

  79. L.... G....

mistrzostwo świata, wywód A klasa, rytm najwyższy piorun, epicentrum kosmodramatyczne, esensja, konwersja punktowa wypaplana, epickie przebrzmiale halo, a że jeszcze ide, to chuj, ide dalej. <3 to tak w skrócie i love it.

  80. J.... Y....

    With your mercurary mouth

  81. G.... E....

The greatest song on the greatest album by the greatest songwriter and singer who ever lived. ( objectively)

  82. J.... M....

In my humble opinion the best Bob Dylan album ever although all his albums with genius

  83. J.... E....

    Oh my god

  84. J.... C....

    This song is so awesome.

  85. p.... ....

I've not heard this for 30 years and it still makes me weep like a baby......I'm sorry J for all the pain I caused you, I really didn't know any better......

    p.... ....

    you are forgiven.

  86. H.... ....

As much as i love Dylan Joan Baez's version is the best recording of this great song

  87. E.... C....

Such a beautiful song, it's a real treat to be here listening to it.

  88. P.... S....

    Best Song Ever !!! 💕💕💕

  89. c.... h....

It’s hard to breathe whilst listening to this beautifully written love offering to Sara... it brings back so many memories throughout my life.

  90. e.... d....

What the hell is talking about.
I need a translator and an explainer to figure out what Bob's saying.

    e.... d....

It's an ode to his wife Sara.

    e.... d....

    it's called poetry

    e.... d....

    @inertia27 ,. It's nonsense.
    Same day modern art.
If you don't get it , that means I get to pretend I get it and therefore I'm better and more sophisticated than you are. It's crap and nobody gets it they just pretend to love his crap in order to behave like pretentious snobs. Wine people do this BS too.

    e.... d....

@eric debord That seems a tad extreme. You picked one Dylan song that EVEN he admits he probably should have shortened. He said while writing SELOL that at some point he was just seeing how many lines he could write. But this song specifically people like to pick apart because it CLEARLY is about Sara, his ex-wife. "One day your Magazine Husband just had to go". She was married to Hans Lownds a Magazine Executive.
and on and on. I'm not a "wine guy" either. LOL. Peace.

  91. j.... l....

    ❤️💚💙

  92. T.... J....

Loved this song for more than 50 years now :-)

  93. R.... F....

I think it's about the funeral of Marilyn Monroe. Listen close because there are little clues. Just my opinion.

  94. w.... b....

    What a soul Bob has
