Bob Dylan - One Too Many Mornings Lyrics

Down the street the dogs are barkin'
And the day is a-gettin' dark
As the night comes in a-fallin'
The dogs'll lose their bark
An' the silent night will shatter
From the sounds inside my minds
For I'm one too many mornings
And a thousand miles behind.

From the crossroads of my doorstep
My eyes start to fade
As I turn my head back to the room
Where my love and I have laid
An' I gaze back to the street
The sidewalk and the sign
And I'm one too many mornings
An' a thousand miles behind.

It's a restless hungry feeling
That don't mean no one no good
When ev'rything I'm a-sayin'
You can say it just as good
You're right from your side
I'm right from mine
We're both just too many mornings
An' a thousand miles behind.

    Rest easy Mogie Crocker.

"He began his tour in Vietnam Oct. 8, 1965 and was killed in action June 4, 1966 the day after his 19th birthday. He died in the Kontum Province of South Vietnam near Dak To as a ground casualty of enemy automatic weapons fire "as he bravely and fearlessly joined his fellow troopers in an assault against the enemy position to save his fellow platoon members.""

Ken Burn's Vietnam has this song playing while Mogie Crocker's family recalls the day they were informed of his passing in Vietnam, a truly powerful scene.

Welcome to day 9,307 of my incarceration here tied up by the Devil itself aka God with all the phone lines cut! Want to make that last phone call? Well, good luck with Freddie Kruger, right? And Vince Welnick cut his own throat too- sure, sure. Along with all the rest of the people who had the keys right? Just coincidental? Fucking vicious. And that Bob Weir (as well as the rest of the band?) would blame a man after he was murdered in cold blood and had his throat slit- after he was the one who left him behind- coincidentally they were going to play a show in Boise Idaho where I just happened to be going nuts in the desert with God and had a job working for the BLM as a botanist at the time. How often have they ever played in Boise Idaho? And no I didn't have tickets to see them and found out years afterwards about Vince's death. But at the time I cursed them, at that same time that Vince died- I was angry- "Kill yourself as a sign of solidarity then!!" I said to them as if the air or God would transmit the message. And then Vince did.

Right before God started talking to me in 1993 I thought the Grateful Dead were following me. The Dead themselves and Jerry Garcia band started playing more shows in Seattle, Jerry stared at me during an entire show, Vince also did, I thought I saw Jerry's gold Mercedes in my little town of 3,000 people that I lived in at the time as well as Vince Welnick walk right past me one night while I was skateboarding. It was really strange, because he was dressed very nicely and had a bunch of product in his curly half-bald hair, something a local would never do and don't have the money to look like that. He didn't actually talk to me, and I believe he wanted me to talk to him- to call him out- to say, "Hey, aren't you Vince from the Grateful Dead?" But I had actually taken LSD that evening before going skateboarding, so I wasn't really into talking to anyone. And unlike most nights I skated in town, I stayed at that one spot for almost an hour just doing slappies on these curbs. My ex-boss from a nearby bakery owned the parking lot and had told me I could skate there anytime I wanted, unlike most places where I got kicked out after just a few minutes, and I was pretty high at the time- but I've seen tracers and colors in the lights and that type of thing. Never an entire person dressed to the hilt down to the hair product in their hair. And though it might have just been any random rich guy on his way to a bar I suppose, like I said, no one in town had that kind of money or would dress up that much at that time at night. It was 10 or 11 and there was NO ONE in town. Where he walked to it was towards a bar which might have had 2 locals sitting at it, tops.

Anyway, I never was that interested in stars or whatever, which is part of the reason I just walked away from a show after Jerry stared the entire time. And though I thought Vince was a talented keyboardist, I really wasn't interested. I have enough problems, I do not need men who are heroin addicts either. Sometimes you get the best of people on stage, and what is behind the curtain isn't as good. Or horrifying even. I was at Grateful Dead shows enough to be a local. I believe Jerry and Vince talked to each other about me, and decided that Vince should try to go after me instead of Jerry. They could have gotten my home address from special tickets I purchased in advance. But then I learned the hard way to let them pass me by. Jerry got married right after this whole stalking incident happened too. Once I saw Jay Buhner (Mariner right fielder) in the same town, out with his family on a sunny afternoon, and though I'm a huge fan I didn't bother him because it seemed like it would be a bother. But you could pick him out on the sidewalk with his bald head and height a block and a half away.

Your comment seems a little out of place and completely unrelated to the song. Maybe you should see a psychiatrist?

    Thanks bob

  24. O.... E....

Genius. He 100% captures a specific mood in this deceptively simple and beautiful song. Every rendition is fantastic in its own way, but this first recording lays the groundwork. 💙

  25. M.... B....

Very similar to the Times They are a Changin."Try singing those lyrics with the music. It's exact.

    M.... B....

    Nice ear

    M.... B....

    Interesting

  26. D.... B....

I guess they uploaded one too many Songs, because this one's a lot more than a thousand Views behind where it oughta be, when compared to the other ones . . .

  27. M.... ....

For me, this the best Bob Dylan song.

    M.... ....

wow, didn't know that! Thought he was strictly into The Beatles. Was aware that he founded Apple ;) peace

    M.... ....

First time I've heard it. Rivals 'Don't Think Twice', but less bitter sentiment.

    M.... ....

I'd agree, but I'm old enough to know every Dylan song is a 'best' for me depending on the mood or atmosphere I'm in at the time. Like trying to nail down a best group, actor or film.

    M.... ....

I can't tell which one is the best

  28. I.... ....

I really love the way he always "electrified" this song

  29. J.... R....

Best vocal of the 60s? For my money, probably so.
