Bob Dylan - New Pony Lyrics

I had a pony, her name was Lucifer
I had a pony, her name was Lucifer
She broke a leg and needed shooting
I swear it hurt me more than it could ever have hurted her.

Sometimes I wonder what's going on with me back
Sometimes I wonder what's going on with me back
You know she got such a sweet disposition
I never know what the poor girl's gonna do to me next.

I got a new pony, she knows how to fox-trot, lope and pace
Well, I got a new pony, she knows how to fox-trot lope and pace
She got great big hind legs
And long black shaggy hair hanging in her face.

Everybody say you're using voodoo, your feet walk by themselves
Well, everybody say you're using voodoo, I seen your feet walk by themselves
Oh baby, that god you been praying to
Is gonna give ya back what you're wishing on someone else.

Come over here pony, I wanna climb up one time on you
Well, come over here pony, I wanna climb up one time on you
Well, you're so nasty and you're so bad
But I swear I love you, yes I do.

Another song about divorce. Such a terrible aspect of adult life. I pray all of you who haven't gone through it never do.

Would not have found this early cut if it had not been for Larkin Poe's live video. Yes, it should have been played, promoted and would have been a pop hit. Lyrics a little racy but when did that ever stop Bob? A little lift from Charlie Patten with a pinch of Robert Johnson to make it even more bluesy.

The Larkin Poe version has almost nothing to do with Dylan's song. LP slow the tempo, change the melody and punctuate the song with a long, free form, yet tightly conceived improvisational excursion. With that said. the Larkin Poe "interpretation" is a transcendent masterpiece - both vocally and instrumentally - a work of art that involves one genius loosely borrowing from another. It deserves to be heard widely. Oddly, Larkin Poe have the disconcerting habit of failing to record top quality performances on CD, and it can only be heard in live performance https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1WLt5VpvzPo

    chanctonbury63 really?

    c.... ....

Really. Sounds like BD is singing at the far end of a train tunnel.

    c.... ....

chanctonbury63 Be thankful, because it's the only existing version of New Pony known so far along with the studio one. This was filmed with a camera back in '78, which isn't bad, knowing that it's 40 years ago.

I think, we better talk this over - so chanctonbury63 can please stop crying. For mr tambourine to provide this gem to us at all is superb. For whatever reason Dylan chose not to perform this song live is his business. But to be able to hear this soundcheck at all is a royal treasure. Really now, I feel, there's just no time to think otherwise.

another underrated gem cant understand why it never got played on the tour

This is speculation on my part - he released Street Legal while with the Rolling Thunder Revue, following up the successful Desire. Street Legal didn't do as well and was more poorly received, and those close to him said he took some of the feedback hard - so perhaps it has bad connotations in his own mind.
