Bob Dylan - House Of The Risin' Sun Lyrics

There is a house down in New Orleans they call the rising sun
And it's been the ruin of many a poor girl and me, oh God, I'm one

My mother was a tailor, she sewed these new blue jeans
My sweetheart was a gambler, Lord, down in New Orleans

Now the only thing a gambler needs is a suitcase and a trunk
And the only time when he's satisfied is when he's on a drunk

He fills his glasses up to the brim and he'll pass the cards around
And the only pleasure he gets out of life is rambling from town to town

Oh tell my baby sister not to do what I have done
But shun that house in New Orleans they call the rising sun

Well with one foot on the platform and the other foot on the train
I'm going back to New Orleans to wear that ball and chain

I'm going back to New Orleans, my race is almost run
I'm going back to end my life down in the rising sun

There is a house in New Orleans they call the rising sun
And it's been the ruin of many a poor girl and me, oh God, I'm one

Bob Dylan House Of The Risin' Sun Comments
  1. D.... ....

Ugh if this was the first I had heard from Bob Dylan, I wouldn't bother listening to anything else he'd done.

  2. S.... K....

stop stealing other people's music bob.

  3. m.... j....

Pure blues song. These are perfect blues vocals for me. It sounds like it was recorded a century ago. Pretty cool.

  4. R.... S....

Este tema es de Bob Dylan. La mejor interpretación fue de The Animals

  5. D.... M....

how have i only just found this

  6. N.... F....

Maybe Bob Dylan should ask why he sounds like Dewey Cox 😎

  7. S.... M....

moe buenardo , me re cebo este tema , la verdad q este disco d dylan del 62s esta medio infravalorado pero brutalidad temas

  8. D.... V....

He looks like a butch lesbian on this cover and I like it.

  9. f.... ....

    dylan wrote this?

    f.... ....

    Traditional. He just arranged it

    f.... ....

    @Nth Degree oh ok. thanks.

  13. J.... C....

I am 54 years old and have never heard this untill today . A outstanding version and what an highly emotive ending . Wow !

  14. M.... P....

quem fala que o bob dylan canta mal nunca escutou essa musica

  15. I.... N....

    :/ Bob trash

  16. L.... B....

    I think it's great....I love it!

  17. G.... M....

    Great Bob in those years

  18. M.... A....

The dylan version talks about the house of the rising sun is a prostitute and the version of the animals a money betting house? Please explain me jajaja

  19. M.... D....

The definitive version of this song as far as I'm concerned. Gives me goosebumps every time I listen to it. Such controlled anger, grief and regret expressed by a then only 20 year old man. Truly the stuff of legend.

  20. F.... I....

Christ Almighty, Dylan's voice is awful in this, but, the lyrics man, they really make it a good song.

  21. B.... ....

Wait so the animals covered this song and Bob Dylan created it?

    B.... ....

He arranged a traditional. Its a very old song. Also check out his "In My Time of Dyin" which is an old gospel song. He credited it as a traditional and Zeppelin credited themselves on it.

  22. A.... T....

Wait... Bob Dylan can sing a coherent melody????

  23. W.... F....

All the songs I like seem to trace back to Bob Dylan

  24. S.... ....

Cuando el chuty se hacía el clásico

  25. A.... ....

I need this on spotify omg

  26. S.... R....

I love Bob - but I cannot imagine anyone except the Animals singing this....

  27. f.... s....

when are we going to be honest and admit Bob Dylan was not a very good singer.

    f.... s....

    you can be wrong

    f.... s....

Everyone knows he isn't a technical singer. Its what he puts across through the "ugly" sound that makes it something unique

  28. a.... ....

He looks super young in that picture

  29. H.... C....

Now im sure, this is about the abuses inside the music industry

  30. .... ....

    Очень здорово поёт!

  31. R.... R....

SOMEONE PLEASE TELL ME WHO PLAYED THE GUITAR HERE!!!!!! ¿WAS IT DYLAN HIMSELF

    R.... R....

yes Dylan is playing while singing

  32. R.... A....

The youth of today have ed Sheeran

  33. P.... M....

I have never heard this version before....but at the same time, it seems appropriate that a storied American folk song would have a Bob Dylan version

  34. r.... ....

Dylan clarified the lyrics with the right vocal tone of such a dark song. This song by the animals is my favourite version sonically, but Dylan's version I truly understand the meaning of the song.

  35. N.... C....

dave van ronk rest in peace my man, fuck that guy bob

  36. M.... C....

    Is it a deepvoice version ?! 😏😅😶 ??

  37. R.... O....

.. it is all Bob ... Steve Jobs (apple) was obsessed with his music.

  38. x.... ....

*This is moaning, not singing. The guy can not sing at all.*

    x.... ....

Do you have any idea who this man is?

    x.... ....

    @Kyla Rohr
*He is young Robert Zimmerman, I guess.*

  39. S.... ....

So, I have to watch a one minute, godam, commercial to see the fucking video?
Is it too much to say, "Eat shit and die?"

    "House Of The Risin' Sun"

  41. F.... F....

    Best version

  42. M.... D....

    Find his 500 miles

  43. P.... D....

As far as guitar work and vocals are concerned, I think this is the best Dylan album. I like how he sings it from the female perspective. From the male, like the Animal's version, it sounds dumb.

Well, there is a house in New Orleans
    They call the Rising Sun
And it's been the ruin of many a poor boy
And God I know I'm one

Seriously. How are you ruined by going to a whorehouse? An incurable std maybe?

    P.... D....

Maybe by being a gambler and a drunk?

  44. R.... R....

¿who plays the guitar in this song

  45. P.... P....

What ever people say. I found it quite funny.

  46. v.... ....

Dylan takes the Feminine POV in this Cover. He also wrote his own brilliant song North Country Blues from the same female perspective.

  47. M.... S....

The Animals version is garbage, it's masculinized to be made more relateable, but nobody can quite identify what the House of The Rising Sun has to do with the guy's downfall. Why is it his downfall, what is so addictive there that he can't leave? Why is it so different from any other whore house, or saloon? It isn't, there is no difference, which is why the story is made into a flat piece of shit. The one thing that could have been introduced to the equation is opium, but I don't believe opium is brought up in that song. The song with the female is compelling, there is naivete, poverty, romance that leads to corruption. The male she follows leads her away from her home, to a life of compromise, and it's almost certain she decides to prostitute, or is forced into prostitution to cover debt, or make money. She is overwhelmed by her shame, and laments the change but is caught up in some cycle of self-hate and prostitution, or drug use along with prostitution.

    M.... S....

@J.Waters0n I like this song alot

    M.... S....

You have some balls man... to make this comment😂

    M.... S....

@Crazy 8ight The first time I heard the Bob Dylan, the Animals vversion seemed tame to me. I read the lyrics recently, and recently and realized it's worse, the lyrics make even less sense.

  48. M.... S....

Now that's how you sing a song, with emotion.

  49. A.... O....

People who love Bob Dylan are my absolute favorite! Love reading all your comments.

    A.... O....

I am a fan of Bob Dylan. I saw him live in 1990, and I buy his music.

Best version . The first song I ever heard at 5 years old....Still haunting..It's not the song it's the interpretation that is genius...

  52. F.... ....

    Chuty eres tú?

  53. W.... S....

  67. S.... ....

Bob Dylan always sounded like a retard to me. I cant believe people think he was actually a good musician.

    S.... ....

I like Bob Dylan, however I admit he destroyed this song.

    S.... ....

And I can't believe people like you exist. But anyways, ecerybody has it's own opinion and who am I to judge

  68. C.... ....

Sounds like that guy from Family Guy lol

  69. M.... S....

If you heard a street busker and he sounded this bad you'd walk straight past without a second thought. How the fuck he forged a lucrative career from this time on is unfathomable.

  70. R.... V....

Got faded yesterday and listened to this song on repeat for 20 minutes... what an incredibly powerful, haunting, convincing rendition of a classic. Good job Bob.

    R.... V....

Ricky V bro tell me way I’m faded as fuck rn and I’m doin the same thing

  71. r.... ....

Fuck Brazil it's mean the house the rise sun.

He sounds like his parents are in the next room and it’s passed his bed time on a school night

  74. T.... D....

WHEN is he going to apologize to Robert Welch's widow?Snowden proved him to be dead on.

    T.... D....

Tom Dockery could I get some context please

    T.... D....

@selbokyo Welch was the founder of The John Birch Society.Dylan did a song calling the group paranoid.

  75. B.... B....

Should use this for a Fallout game about New Orleans - with the Mississippi River being a major part of the conflict (even now we still use it for freight, imagine its importance to a post apocalyptic America). Could have so many cool things like Mark Twain references, riverboats, and a bunch of cool places like Redstone Arsenal (a tributary goes pretty close by) and dams, not to mention naval battles and potentially even opening up the Caribbean.

But I guess Bethesda doesn’t know how to make cool stuff...

  76. M.... l....

    Lptm es chuty

  77. N.... H....

Sometimes, Dylan's singing is awful. Other times, his singing fits just fine for the song.

  78. T.... W....

    Ok boomer

  79. C.... L....

    Hell
    Yeah

  80. A.... A....

    Amazing❤❤❤❤❤

  81. S.... R....

Hearing this for the first time just now. 57 years after its initial release. Made me shudder. The wrenching power and despair of Dylan's version surpasses any other take I've ever heard. On a more absurdist note, the ad preceding the song was for the soundtrack to the Charlie's Angels movie. SMH.

  82. G.... L....

    Well done

  83. Y.... B....

Bob, thanks for all your songs

  84. G.... B....

    He wrote this too!?

    G.... B....

Glenn B this song’s been around since the early 1800s it’s kinda a folk song

  85. A.... ....

For a song that has existed since the 1800s, Bob really made this his own have it huge respect and carried on the pain that was so blatant within it

  86. L.... A....

    Interpretação magnífica! Voz única.

    M.... M....

Did he do House of the Rising Sun?

Even Dylan said Hendrix did Watchtower better

  89. J.... B....

I love how he sings straight from the heart and soul. I shed tears when I listen to this song.

    M.... C....

@Amber Fillmore the chord progression at the beginning or mainly all of it

  97. s.... ....

Who wrote this song? I always thought it was Bob but some tell me no! That is was The Animals. ?

    s.... ....

It's a really old folk song that nobody knows who wrote it, the animals just made it famous. What's great is that it's been covered numerous times and lyrics tweaked every time

    s.... ....

@Hamish Munroe Thank you very much.

    s.... ....

    Happy to help :)
