Bob Dylan - Every Grain Of Sand Lyrics

In the time of my confession, in the hour of my deepest need
When the pool of tears beneath my feet flood every newborn seed
There's a dying voice within me reaching out somewhere
Toiling in the danger and in the morals of despair.

Don't have the inclination to look back on any mistake
Like Cain, I now behold this chain of events that I must break
In the fury of the moment I can see the master's hand
In every leaf that trembles, in every grain of sand.

Oh, the flowers of indulgence and the weeds of yesteryear
Like criminals, they have choked the breath of conscience and good cheer
The sun beat down upon the steps of time to light the way
To ease the pain of idleness and the memory of decay.

I gaze into the doorway of temptation's angry flame
And every time I pass that way I always hear my name
Then onward in my journey I come to understand
That every hair is numbered like every grain of sand.

I have gone from rags to riches in the sorrow of the night
In the violence of a summer's dream, in the chill of a wintry light
In the bitter dance of loneliness fading into space
In the broken mirror of innocence on each forgotten face.

I hear the ancient footsteps like the motion of the sea
Sometimes I turn, there's someone there, other time it's only me
I am hanging in the balance of the reality of man
Like every sparrow falling, like every grain of sand.

There is only one song on the planet which can rival this masterpiece .....This song is composed by a poet also, an alter ego of Dylan which is singing his poems like Dylan. His name is Cezar Ivanescu....He died...His poems and his music are absolutely gorgeous....He is in the gallery of William Blake, Shakespeare...Check this out Bob... i don't want to die before I produce an LP with him...

Here is a bonus for Bob, I translated from romanian, another genius, Mihai Eminescu. Here's for you Bob:
    Fallin’ apart
    By Mihai Eminescu

To ask a sign my dearest beloved to never forget you,

Only for you I’d ask, but you don’t belong to you no more,

Don’t want the withered flower from your golden hair,

Throw me to forgetfulness my only praying is

How it will be that this cruel feeling of my faded luck

Which also darkens away, will forever stay instead ?

All other waves are singing to the same creek,

What good can be the sadness which stays

When through this world we’re doomed to pass

Like dream of a shadow and shadow of a dream?

What good from now on to bearing me in mind?

Why counting the years flying above the dead?

Today or tomorrow if I’ll pass away, it doesn’t mean a thing,

When in everyone’s memory my trace will fade away,

And you’ll want forgetting the luck we dreamed away.

When you’ll wake up my dearest, back in the past,

Black be the shadow in which I would be dead,

Like we would have never been together,

Such as the years filled with longing love would be deserted -

For loving you so much, could you forgive me?

With face turned to the wall, abandon me to strangers,

Frozen be under the eyelids the lights of my eyes,

And when dust would turn to dust,

Who’s gonna know where I’m from, or who am I?

Lamenting chants crawling through the cold walls

    Will beg for me the eternal peace;

But only one I wish, coming close to me,

To whisper me your name on my closed eyelids,

Then – if they desire – throwing me at ending of the road

It would even be better than what it’s now for me.

From far away horizons rises a flock of ravens,

And darkens all the heavens on my blinded eyes,
Arisen whirlwind from the edges of the earth,

Giving my dust to ashes and my heart to wind…

But you remain blooming as in an April month,

With eyes filled with lights, with childish smile,

How much of a child are you forever young remain,

And don’t remember me no more, as I will not as well.

Here is this poem with music by poet Cezar Ivanescu equally, he is incredibly!!!

Dear Bob Dylan, if you want to help me with this project of issuing an album with your alter ego, please send me an email: [email protected]
Let's discuss this. THIS IS A MATTER OF ART.

  25. d.... ....

    Such an incredibly poignant song!!

  26. D.... N....

Some people tend to make fun of Dylan's voice but only a voice as piercing can accompany the lyrics that are so ready to stab a person's heart. Dylan sings Dylan best.

  27. C.... S....

    Superb.

  28. v.... ....

Nearly perfect lyrically. I mean nobody could read these words and deny that it is on par with the greatest Poets.

  29. T.... B....

I think you think this is about you. Its always about you. I thought it was about me for a long time too. But its about God. If God were to confess its sins, would you listen? For how is it to get any better if you don't?

  30. T.... B....

Peeking through a keyhole! Down upon your knees!

  31. M.... W....

A comparatively old song, but I still like it.

  32. H.... C....

And every time I pass that way I always hear my name

  33. O.... L....

    amen, brother

  34. s.... s....

    The lyrics are so visual

  35. D.... G....

This probably the best version and the best arrangement.

  36. P.... O....

I can see the Master's hand in the Master's hand. Can you?

  37. E.... V....

Wow! Bob that is so good. That is poetry.

  38. S.... X....

What a beautiful lyrics. From all the events and emotions of his journey, which are so humongous to him, to the tiny and insignificant grain of sand on the ground, are all part of God’s plan. God is the truth that penetrate all. Humans are all insignificant no matter how turbulent your life has been. We are just a grain of sand in the universe. Love how the music is melancholy just fit the lyrics that’s kind of sad and painful. Beautiful!

  39. g.... h....

Bob needs to write an anthem protesting the NY Abortion Laws. I’m fearful of what this country is becoming....anyone ever heard of Sodom and Gamura?

  40. D.... D....

Thank you Bob Dylan this song means so much to me.

  41. D.... D....

In Loving Memory of Jan Rolland Diorio Jr 05/09/64. 01/20/84 miss you son. Death Is Not The End...

  64. g.... ....

Hi. I didn’t see these lyrics, and they should be readily available for all to read. These are the lyrics from this version, with slight differences from the album cut:

In the time of my confession, in the hour of my deepest need
When the pool of tears beneath my feet floods every newborn seed
There's a dying voice within me reaching out somewhere
Toiling in the danger and in the morals of despair
Don't have the inclination to look back on any mistake
Like Cain, I behold this chain of events that I must break
In the fury of the moment I can see the master's hand
In every leaf that trembles, in every grain of sand
Oh, the flowers of indulgence and the weeds of yesteryear
Like criminals, they have choked the breath of conscience and good cheer
The sun beam down upon the steps of time to light the way
To ease the pain of idleness and the memory of decay
I gaze into the doorway of temptation's angry flame
And every time I pass that way I'll always hear my name
Then onward in my journey I come to understand
That every hair is numbered like every grain of sand
I have gone from rags to riches in the sorrow of the night
In the violence of a summer's dream, in the chill of a wintery light
In the bitter dance of loneliness fading into space
In the broken mirror of innocence on each forgotten face
I hear the ancient footsteps like the motion of the sea
Sometimes I turn, there's someone there, other times it's only me
I am hanging in the balance of a perfect finished plan
Like every sparrow falling, like every grain of sand

    g.... ....

Thanks for sharing the lyrics, brings happy tears to my eyes!

  67. j.... ....

A most amazing song, from one of my favourite albums. Brings peace.

  68. J.... A....

I agree , Brandon , Biograph was mine too. I read along time ago , a studio musician was recording with Bob this song .
Bob stopped , in the session , to go off and write for a few minutes the finishing touches . He was completely blown away
with the words that followed . I do believe Bob Dylan will remain a soulmate to many searching for truth long after we are gone .
Jesus is the ultimate Truth . Bob just sang about His truth . Peter behind my Judy

  69. J.... O....

Alone on an island, Bob Dylan is the greatest songwriter ever. And a very good vocalist.

  70. G.... S....

Might be the best song of all time

  74. k.... s....

bob dylan is the greatest songwriter of all time.

    k.... s....

Bob dylan is the greatest singer, songwriter there will ever be, nobody could ever come close, hes wrote more songs than anyone ,most are magical, been on a never ending tour for years, allways changing ,there will never be another. And its going to be a very sad day in my life when he goes. I found dylan when i was 14 im 38 now and hes been the soundtrack to my life ,i dont need any other music other than bob. You either get bob or u dont .only a true dylan fan will know.

    k.... s....

It's hard to see anyone ever coming close, too. There will definitely never be something as big as the Beatles, and I doubt there will ever be as good of a songwriter as Bob. It's interesting to see people try to argue against it, but Dylan's work is so massive that it's crazy to think someone else tops it. Even the best like Cohen and Townes Van Zandt. They're great. I love them. But they don't come close in the big picture.

  75. Y.... S....

    Nice spellinglol

  76. M.... S....

    super verzia

  77. F.... L....

Demasiado bello y tan profundo. Merece algo más que el Nobel.

This song always tugs and twists at my guts and my heart and soul...........and I’m not even a believer........yet ! If you are there God, please look after Bob when his time is done...........he has meant the world to millions and millions. A power for goodness and righteousness .

    B.... ....

What a generous thing to say Bubbacat! and if the God I personally try to believe in really does exist, I'm sure he must have heard you!

    B.... ....

    Go to the Lord friend.

Grazie tanto per la musica che ci regali, un abbraccio ciao ciao

  82. J.... B....

  83. b.... t....

The album track of Every Grain of Sand was a single, first take and it is perfect, with an incredible vocal and two heartbreaking harmonica solos. This is great as well and shows that Bob is always "on." To ease the pain of idleness and the memory of decay.

  84. T.... ....

    Cheers Bob.

  85. T.... G....

the 15 people who voted this down must be Trump supporters.

    T.... G....

Why would that be? Dylan wouldn't even bother to vote down his own song.

    T.... G....

You must be one of the founding fathers without a sense of humour.

    T.... G....

The video is ALL about Dylan.

  86. V.... D....

Oh yea! Hey Bob love this. I can see the grain, I know what it is telling me. I Am grateful...I love You! Saw you when you performed at your very first concert. You were by yourself on stage (Carnegie Recital Hall)...Only a guitar, harmonica, and your early songs and your. Voice) There was not a peep in the house (Imagine that) so I fell in love that day....I was hooked! Went on to see many more concerts, including the one with Tom Petty at Madison Square...dear God, keep Tom safe.As for you Mr.
DYLAN.. I will continue to love and support your music...when I saw you at Carnegie, I was in my 20's...dont laugh, I am now 84! Oh dear, if my life had Dylan in it, I must be ok!

    V.... D....

Verna D'Alto may you have many more years listening to bob. He's the greatest there will ever be, from now untill the end of time ,nobody could ever compare. God bless.

    V.... D....

    All Positive.

    V.... D....

Thank you for that beautiful remembrance of youth. I am quite a bit younger than you and Bob, but my own youth seems like a different lifetime now. And in that different lifetime, in 1979, just barely into my own 20s, I saw Bob Dylan live. I hope he keeps singing for as long as he wants.

Thank you again, Ms. D'Alto. ❤️

  87. R.... B....

lovely to listen to before going to sleep

*Bob Dylan - Every Grain of Sand*

  90. M.... P....

    Wow. Just wow.

  91. M.... J....

One of Bob's greatest songs and one of my top five favourites.

  92. N.... R....

Brandon DIDO on the song EGOS ; I could listen to this version forever. The band isn’t overpowering Bob’s vocals ; they were Chrystal clear. I am 2 yrs new to the song and I believe his lyrics are no. One for his songs. Yeah the chords are very unique. Bob’s emotions only serve to totally enhance and chill one’s bones ; SUBLIME , my favourite song of BD! ❤️

  93. s.... ....

Great. But the demo with Jennifer Warnes and dog is the greatest.

    s.... ....

LOL. But that version is nowhere to be found, so I put this version in my "'..bootleg series.." playlist instead. You've gotta admit this is gorgeous.
