Bob Dylan - But Beautiful Lyrics

Love is funny or it's sad
Or it's quiet or it's mad
It's a good thing or it's bad
But beautiful

Beautiful to take a chance and if you fall, you fall
And I'm thinking I wouldn't mind at all

Love is tearful or it's gay
It's a problem or it's play
It's a heartache either way
But beautiful

And I'm thinking if you were mine, I'd never let you go
And that would be but beautiful, I know

Love is tearful or it's gay
It's a problem or it's play
It's a heartache either way
But it's beautiful

And I'm thinking if you were mine, I'd never let you go
And that would be but beautiful, I know

  1. A.... A....

    Fantástico !!!

  2. T.... A....

Damn, it's gonna take me a long time to figure out exactly what he's doing on that guitar. And who's that to his left? Doesn't look like either of the guitar players listed on the 2002 tour. I wish I had a couple of extra hands and a 12-string so I could play both parts at once! This version of VOJ has to be recorded, preserved, covered, studied, honored... did somebody say 'worshipped'? LOL! Thanks, Elston.

    T.... A....

The man on his left looks a bit like Wiily de Ville...

  21. A.... E....

Beautiful. I could handle a studio version of this version any day.

  22. C.... T....

The greatest songwriter of all time. His songs and performances should be on every music curriculum in every secondary school. Might wean some young uns off the drivel that is put out today.

    C.... T....

    Chris Topps ....
You do realize that this song was written by the late, great Robert Hunter. As far as being the greatest I'd have to say that Dylan & Hunter are the two greatest American songwriters of all time (& space).

Bob always knows every word and every nuance in every word of every song as his brain connects on his stage before thousands . His guitar and him sound as one . Peter behind Judy

    That guitar... fantastic!

  31. r.... a....

If we shall call Dylan, a musician or an author is difficult to say, but in my eyes, he is both. He has got almost all the prizes that are possible to get in both art forms, but without the words, he had been a mediocre musician and not any prominent author, but luckily for us, he is a 1 to 10 thousand who has both and is, therefore, one of the most excellent communicators of the development of the radical culture of the late 20ieth century. No doubt, he is the most important person in this development

    r.... a....

Yeah he's a formidable culture shaper

  32. T.... ....

    🕊👍❤️🇩🇰

  36. O.... W....

When he recorded this song originally in Nashville he reinvigorated it as a place to record. His facility with country music, with all styles including blues, folk and jazz are exactly the reason he has had such an incredible career. His love of playing and ability to keep finding inspiration and beauty is just like Willie Nelson, both players and writers for life. It is the greatest inspiration to me, and Jerry García also had this timeless quality as a performer who borrowed from all styles to immortalize and celebrate the great American Songbook.

  37. j.... d....

Arranged for 2 acoustic guitars, baa and drums.  - Quite a departure from the original.

  53. K.... o....

This Live version of "Visions Of Johanna" is a complete re-imagining of the original recording on 1966's "Blonde )n Blonde" album.  It takes a little getting used to because the original arrangement is so familiar, but it's still great.

Jesus, Elston - some days this just is my refuge thank you... ! I've had my visions and yes, they do keep me up sometimes... ;-)

  72. S.... ....

Its amazing how Bob does covers of Bob. David Dalton let's us into the secret about Bob in his interesting retrospective "Who Is That Man?: In Search of the Real Bob Dylan".  Bob Dylan, is a cinematic experience constantly evolving away from all of those fixed perspective people have of him.  There is no single Bob Dylan, but an assemblage of personalities brilliantly constructed from our collective cultural memory.  What you have been watching over the last half century is the longest running series in history. That's Robert Zimmerman's real genius.

  73. S.... K....

Bob Dylan is either very intelligent or very square. And nobody uses that word anymore, except me, in the here and now. And nobody else is here. And now is fleeting.

The lyrics to this wonderful song - Visions of Johanna
By Robert Allen Zimmerman aka Bob Dylan

Ain't it just like the night to play tricks when you're tryin' to be so quiet?
We sit here stranded, though we're all doin' our best to deny it
And Louise holds a handful of rain, temptin' you to defy it
Lights flicker from the opposite loft
In this room the heat pipes just cough
The country music station plays soft
But there's nothing, really nothing to turn off
Just Louise and her lover so entwined
And these visions of Johanna that conquer my mind
In the empty lot where the ladies play blindman's bluff with the key chain
And the all-night girls they whisper of escapades out on the "D" train
We can hear the night watchman click his flashlight
Ask himself if it's him or them that's insane
Louise, she's all right, she's just near
She's delicate and seems like the mirror
But she just makes it all too concise and too clear
    That Johanna's not here
The ghost of 'lectricity howls in the bones of her face
Where these visions of Johanna have now taken my place
Now, little boy lost, he takes himself so seriously
He brags of his misery, he likes to live dangerously
And when bringing her name up
He speaks of a farewell kiss to me
He's sure got a lotta gall to be so useless and all
Muttering small talk at the wall while I'm in the hall
    How can I explain?
It's so hard to get on
And these visions of Johanna, they kept me up past the dawn
Inside the museums, infinity goes up on trial
Voices echo this is what salvation must be like after a while
But Mona Lisa musta had the highway blues
You can tell by the way she smiles
    See the primitive wallflower freeze
When the jelly-faced women all sneeze
Hear the one with the mustache say, "Jeez, I can't find my knees"
Oh, jewels and binoculars hang from the head of the mule
But these visions of Johanna, they make it all seem so cruel
The peddler now speaks to the countess who's pretending to care for him
Sayin', "Name me someone that's not a parasite and I'll go out and say a prayer for him"
    But like Louise always says
"Ya can't look at much, can ya man?"
As she, herself, prepares for him
And Madonna, she still has not showed
We see this empty cage now corrode
Where her cape of the stage once had flowed
The fiddler, he now steps to the road
He writes ev'rything's been returned which was owed
On the back of the fish truck that loads
    While my conscience explodes
The harmonicas play the skeleton keys and the rain
And these visions of Johanna are now all that remain

Just a little different from the original.

A famous guy (i don't remember his name) said that all of the best and beautiful songs (in all genres) has long been composed. No one can beat that generation. I believe him when youngsters' comment saying "why can't be music be done that way these days?"

Yikes! Horrible. I remember when he could sing. There was a rustic mellowness to his voice. His 1st 5 or 6 albums were great. Then he got weirder and weirder.

Dylan refuses to loosen the reign on his music collection... and I'm not sophisticated enough anymore to finagle it online with credit cards without losing my identity and probably getting seriously ripped off lol, and I refuse to let my secretary know I'm so damned old fashioned. If its not on youtube, I seem to miss out... give it up dylan, you made plenty already. give up the crumbs while there's still interest in your music. right?
