Bob Dylan - A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall Lyrics

Oh, where have you been, my blue-eyed son?
And where have you been, my darling young one?
I've stumbled on the side of twelve misty mountains
I've walked and I've crawled on six crooked highways
I've stepped in the middle of seven sad forests
I've been out in front of a dozen dead oceans
I've been ten thousand miles in the mouth of a graveyard
And it's a hard, it's a hard, it's a hard, and it's a hard
It's a hard rain's a-gonna fall

Oh, what did you see, my blue-eyed son?
And what did you see, my darling young one?
I saw a newborn baby with wild wolves all around it
I saw a highway of diamonds with nobody on it
I saw a black branch with blood that kept drippin'
I saw a room full of men with their hammers a-bleedin'
I saw a white ladder all covered with water
I saw ten thousand talkers whose tongues were all broken
I saw guns and sharp swords in the hands of young children
And it's a hard, it's a hard, it's a hard, and it's a hard
It's a hard rain's a-gonna fall

And what did you hear, my blue-eyed son?
And what did you hear, my darling young one?
I heard the sound of a thunder, that roared out a warnin'
I heard the roar of a wave that could drown the whole world
I heard one hundred drummers whose hands were a-blazin'
I heard ten thousand whisperin' and nobody listenin'
I heard one person starve, I heard many people laughin'
Heard the song of a poet who died in the gutter
Heard the sound of a clown who cried in the alley
And it's a hard, it's a hard, it's a hard, it's a hard
It's a hard rain's a-gonna fall

Oh, what did you meet, my blue-eyed son?
Who did you meet, my darling young one?
I met a young child beside a dead pony
I met a white man who walked a black dog
I met a young woman whose body was burning
I met a young girl, she gave me a rainbow
I met one man who was wounded in love
I met another man who was wounded in hatred
And it's a hard, it's a hard, it's a hard, it's a hard
It's a hard rain's a-gonna fall

And what'll you do now, my blue-eyed son?
And what'll you do now, my darling young one?
I'm a-goin' back out 'fore the rain starts a-fallin'
I'll walk to the depths of the deepest dark forest
Where the people are many and their hands are all empty
Where the pellets of poison are flooding their waters
Where the home in the valley meets the damp dirty prison
And the executioner's face is always well hidden
Where hunger is ugly, where souls are forgotten
Where black is the color, where none is the number
And I'll tell and speak it and think it and breathe it
And reflect from the mountain so all souls can see it
And I'll stand on the ocean until I start sinkin'
But I'll know my song well before I start singin'
And it's a hard, it's a hard, it's a hard, and it's a hard
It's a hard rain's a-gonna fall

the man is a misunderstood genius of lyrics is why he is a Noble prize winner because they finally heard his words not his song or his voice

  2. T.... B....

Bob has to be the greatest songwriter ever to walk this planet.
Possibly one of the best things to ever come out of the US. A living Shakespeare.

We need you again, 20-year-old Bob. The times they are a-changin' BACK...

Masterpiece. "And I'll tell it and speak it and think it and breathe it

This should have a billion views, young people, get to work.

Know that this legend is still alive and kickin',

  14. p.... r....

People say this of Dylan and that of Dylan... and he should have, and could have, and if only he'd...... and what a, whatever, he is... and then you put this on... and it all falls away, for what does it matter before such a song?...I still just sit there stunned, amazed, and honoured that I have had the chance to hear such genius. I remember hearing the producer of Highway 61 Revisited say that as soon as he saw Dylan he knew the Spirit was upon him, was working through him. And I believe that also.

First time ever hearing this. At first I thought He had been smoking some serious shit but the Lyrics are a little to vivid for that.

  33. T.... M....

    1. I saw a clown who cried in the alley .
    2. I saw a poet who died in the gutter.

I met a man who was wounded in love.
I met a man who was wounded in hatred.
...in short we all are wounded whoever we are and whatever we are doing. Sometimes I think humanity is a hopeless case of evolution. Then I realise, this song exists and it's a human who has written this. It gives a bit of satisfaction and somewhat it fills the hollowness of my heart.

  34. Y.... T....

I can't remember the name of the 60's poet who wept when he first heard Dylan sing this. When asked why, he answered that his poetry didn't measure up to this. I have been listening to this 60
years and the Nobel Prize committee knows why!

  57. D.... H....

A lot of people never got it. For sure, he was our poet, still is. Another special one, “Bob Dylan’s Dream” is as relative today as ever before and I’m 73. I was in Greenwich Village bumming around the day Freewheelin’ went on sale, must have been 1963 sometime. I had taken a train from CT into NYC with a buddy to go to the Village. I wanted to see The Bitter End, The Haunted Bookshop, all of it. We rambled around and had the best time. Took the train back to Bridgeport that night. Yes, I can relate to that song. That was surely the time......it was a special time to be alive. I can remember staying up all night with guitar buddies arguing this, that and everything going on especially in 1964, 65, 66, the sixties.
There was a sense of passion then about your ideas, your hopes and your analysis of the world. We read too. We read a lot! Books were important. There was knowledge there. There was power in those words.
You can’t mark up a Kindle and dog ear the pages with favorite passages like a book.
I may sound like an old traveler, lamenting the journey but songs like this and many others, they made the journey for us and it was a journey even we knew not where it would take us.

  58. A.... E....

"Where black is the colour, where none is the number" Dylan means that there is a difference between the colour black and the number none (nobody). You should not treat someone differently just because of their colour. Use the word none when you say for example what is 1-0 and you will say none, or (none of you guys like pizza). The overall definition of the lyric is "Everyone is equal regardless of colour"

  81. S.... L....

"I saw guns with sharp swords in the hands of young children" this is even relatable nowadays. Even today you have certain groups who train children, force them to use weapons and basically steam them for war. Brainwashing them with who is the enemy and who isn't. Children should be thinking about their future;their family, friends, perhaps pets, school. Overall children should be far.... far away from any type of violence.
