Bob Dylan - 4th Time Around Lyrics

When she said
"Don't waste your words, they're just lies"
I cried she was deaf
And she worked on my face until breaking my eyes
Then said, "What else you got left"
It was then that I got up to leave
But she said, "Don't forget
Everybody must give something back
For something they get".

I stood there and hummel
I tapped on her drum and asked her how come
And she buttoned her boot
And straightened her suit
Then she said, "Don't get cute"
So I forced my hands in my pockets
And felt with my thumbs
And gallantly handed her
My very last piece of gum.

She threw me outside
I stood in the dirt where ev'ryone walked
And after finding I'd
Forgotten my shirt
I went back and knocked
I waited in the hallway, she went to get it
And I tried to make sense
Out of that picture of you in your wheelchair
That leaned up against ...

Her Jamaican rum
And when she did come, I asked her for some
She said, "No dear"
I said, "Your words aren't clear
You'd better spit out your gum"
She screamed till her face got so red
Then she fell on the floor
And I covered her up and then
Thought I'd go look through her drawer.
And when I was through
I filled up my shoe
And brought it to you
And you, you took me in
You loved me then
You didn't waste time
And I, I never took much
I never asked for your crutch
Now dont ask for mine.

Her leather teeth, her bloodshot mouth,
Crying into the smoke colored wind,
    The ancient travelers winding south,
Where meatloaf sailors and the Cherubim, swim,
To the bottom of the watermelon ocean,
And the hound dog Seraphim now have a notion,
    How to manhandle the Greeks
    And their porcelain love potion.

    Thanks Bob

  4. 1.... ....

    great tune

  5. G.... S....

Before bob dylan put this song out he played it for john lennon
John lennon and the beatles then went on to right Norwegian wood.
As a response bob dylan put out the original masterpiece" fourth time around"

  6. M.... L....

Blows Lennon's lyrics out of the water for sure.

We've all known someone like this--if we're lucky.

  14. H.... H....

I think this song was my dad's way of telling me about women. Don't waste time and don't ask for their crutch.

  15. r.... w....

Concerning he "rebuke" by Dylan to Lennon (below) consider the last few lines in "Fourth Time Around"...."And, I never took much...I never asked for your crutch...Now don't ask for mine." Then Lennon responds in his 1970 song, "God." ...I don't believe in Zimmerman..."

  16. r.... w....

This song has been explained as an answer to John Lennon's song on Rubber Soul's "Norwegian Wood." It's as if Dylan was telling Lennon, "Nice try John...doing a Dylanesque type song. Here s how it's supposed to be done," (i.e 4th Time Around).

    r.... w....

    The Beatles did it better

  17. H.... E....

Often, when we talk about an "artist" who has made his way, we say "... he is clever! He'd known how to hollow his voice, ...".
I think we couldn't say the some about Dylan. This artist is certainly different.
In addition of being a great artist, this gentleman is certainly clever too, but exceptionally serious. We can only deeply respect him.

  18. E.... T....

It almost sounds like a drug deal gone wrong to me

  28. k.... ....

Ripped off the beatles Norwegian wood here

    k.... ....

Sorry, but it was exactly the opposite, The Beatles ripped Bob.

  29. v.... ....

Very few ever really "get" Bobs humor. But I can assure you he is not "just copying" Norwegian Wood here. Something can be a "tribute" to the 4 guys who always made it to every Bob Show they could (See Isle of Wight 1969.) and also a rebuke like, "Rubber Soul was nice" now go back to doing your own thing, All of these Great Artists are paranoid about other Great Artists. John and Bob both were of each other I believe.

  30. H.... E....

it was the song I loved most when I was very young, I still and well like it by the same passion.
I'm happy to have existed, while Bob Dylan was the icon of the art of the century.

    Rubber Soul revisited

  32. W.... b....

Not a good copy Dylan of Norwegian Wood miles behind.norweigiean wood was recorded over a year before this October of 65 final mixing.dylans music changed after rubber soul as did all other artists .

  33. W.... b....

Dylan wrote so many songs that sounded the same.

    W.... b....

he was mostly focused on the lyrics so it makes sense that some of them would sound similar

    W.... b....

Lol this sounds nothing like any of his other songs

    W.... b....

    Unliked lennon created different genres

  34. B.... ....

Norwegian Wood? I can do better! Well, it is not better, since the Beatle theme is a masterpiece, but it's a different approach.

    B.... ....

I just listened to this straight after listening to Norwegian Wood. It's like a continuation of the same story, or two guys singing about the same girl.

    B.... ....

John Lennon, at least, interpreted this song as dig at him for copying Dylan's songwriting style with "Norwegian Wood." The last line, "I never asked for your crutch, now don't ask mine" meaning, roughly, 'I didn't copy the Beatles, don't copy me.'

Who knows if that's what Dylan really meant, but that's what Lennon thought.

  54. N.... C....

A parody of The Beatles. He would parody Springsteen with Tweeter and the Monkey Man.

    N.... C....

Yeah let's Parody The Beatles. Just dumb imo. Norweigen Wood is a dam good song.

    N.... C....

Yes a parody. He could have sued but chose to parody the NW lyrics and take it to another level with wordplay. It's pretty well known that Lennon stole the melody from Bobby (this one song ok don't get upset) after Dylan played it for them when they were hanging out in his hotel. They were friendly rivals. I think probably John thought maybe he wouldn't mind since Dylan said he didn't like it very much, he hadn't worked it through yet. When NW came out he did the words for Fourth Time Around as an epic troll. It's pretty funny.

    F.... F....

It's more than that, in a lot of ways, since it's kind of like Dylan turning back on the Beatles for copying him. It's pretty funny overall, but I do think it stands as its own song easily

    F.... F....

@K C they didn't copy shit, they were inspired by him and many others. Whatever they did - including Norwegian Wood - they sounded like themselves.

    Lyrics

    "I once had a girl
Or should I say she once had me
    She showed me her room
    Isn't it good Norwegian wood?

    She asked me to stay
And she told me to sit anywhere
    So I looked around
    And I noticed there wasn't a chair

I sat on a rug biding my time
    Drinking her wine
We talked until two and then she said
    "It's time for bed"

    She told me she worked
In the morning and started to laugh
    I told her I didn't
And crawled off to sleep in the bath

And when I awoke I was alone
    This bird had flown
    So I lit a fire
    Isn't it good Norwegian wood?"

    I.... ....

Dylan wrote this as revenge for the beatles stealing his style

    I.... ....

@Tim A Lennon didn't have to steal anything from Dylan. He was the only writer who was better than him.

    I.... ....

@IAmD.J. 44:40 is where he talks about it. basically it seems he doesnt know anything 100% sure but he thinks beatles stole it from dylan. and then perhaps dylan later added that "crutch" line in to take a jab at them.

    I.... ....

@garad123456 Yeah, the story is super interesting. It seems like everybody has a different view of what occurred though 😂

    I.... ....

´like if you are singing beatles lyrics now

  87. I.... ....

    I once had a girl, or should I say.....whoops.
I really like the weird lyricism in this song

    "I stood there and hummed,

    I.... ....

I know what you did there 😏, isn't it wood?

    I.... ....

little boy in his chienese suit,...i took his flute,i was not very nice to him,was I? but i did it because he lied, an because he took YOU for a ride.n because time is on HIS side

    I.... ....

Bob Dylan begins his song Ballad in Plain D with "I once had a girl". This was on the ANOTHER SIDE OF BOB DYLAN album from 1964, before Norwegian Wood.

  88. J.... s....

    Preciosa!!

  89. M.... L....

Ty Dylan , finally in yt I can't believe it 😭

  90. C.... P....

    Norwegian wood anyone???

    C.... P....

Bob Dylan at one point said it was his response to "Norwegian Wood" and "Norwegian Wood" is supposedly a response to a Dylan song. I've always wondered which one.

    C.... P....

@A Genius Bob never said that. It's John Lennon who said he thought this song was a message to him. The problem is that John was a paranoiac with a Dylan obsession. Dylan rarely explains his lyrics.

    C.... P....

Carlos Padín Martínez bollocks mate they copied him not visa Vera's the melody is similar but the words take it to another level from Bob who wrote it .

    C.... P....

This song was on the works before Norwegian Wood, he actually showed this to Lennon once.

    C.... P....

Then john lennon created and experimented different genres.

  91. W.... N....
