Blue Oyster Cult - Wings Wetted Down Lyrics

Flights of black horseman soar over churches
Pursued by an army of birds in the rain
None of them can see the clouds, the polished wings don't care
Animal ways through the hazy dreams full of pain

Wings wetted down, stumbling on the ground
It all turns around, in the end
The voices sound deadly, sometimes I hear
Echoes of empires, spread throughout the sky

Wings wetted down, stumbling on the ground
It all turns around, in the end

Flights of black horseman soar over churches
Pursued by an army of birds in the rain
Wings wetted down, stumbling on the ground
It all turns around, in the end

Blue Oyster Cult Wings Wetted Down Comments
  1. D.... ....

Am I the only one who had an album where the song was labeled "Wings Netted Down"?

    D.... ....

Hey! what is 138+124? Oh wait! 262 prince of peace. God of War.

  2. B.... W....

For the people with such exceptional refined taste as to be drinking this masterpiece song in, you might like one or two playlists on my channel. I don't make a penny. This is just giving back for all the great music I've soaked in. I love great s--t and enjoy sharing it. I also like learning the name of a song that's been stuck in my mind for 40 years and alas, learning what it is! Maybe one of my playlists will do that for you too :)

    B.... W....

    Lord Alfred.😋

  3. D.... C....

Hidden gem...subtle perfection. A Bouchard masterpiece.

    Flights of black horseman
Soar o'er churches
Pursued by an army of birds in the rain
None of them can see the clouds
The polished wings don't care
Animal waves through the hazy dreams full of pain

Wings wetted down
Stumbling on the ground
It all turns around
In the end, the end, the end

The voices sound deadly
Sometimes I hear
Echoes of empires spread throughout the sky

Wings wetted down
Stumbling on the ground
It all turns around
In the end, the end, the end

Flights of black horseman
Soar o'er the churches
Pursued by an army of birds in the rain

Wings wetted down
It all turns around
It all turns around
In the end, the end, the end...

Doom metal BÖC. Amazing early DOOM METAL song!

  8. h.... d....

Does anybody know what fuzz pedal hes using?

  9. f.... ....

Perfect early 70' s stoner rock tune. Sounds a bit like something Uli Roth-era Scorpions would've written.

  10. C.... D....

How I love this song! That intro is second to none.

  11. S.... S....

Such unique sound. Unique to the band and to each album.

  12. L.... O....

Whom ever thought that the Soft White Underbelly wouldn't get their message to ALL...we are doing it..AND FOR THOSE WHO THINK THATS RACIST...LISTEN TO THE WORDS...ALL IS LOVE....

On your Feet or ON YOUR KNEES!

    G.... H....

Claudia, you're gorgeous. Do you have a FB or Instgram page?

    I.... m....

For years, I thought it was, "Echoes of vampires..." :)

    I.... m....

@goopah I don't think you were wrong actually

  16. 3.... ....

what a burner, it must be the 70's

  17. k.... k....

Definately one of my Top 5 BOC songs.

    k.... k....

Kat, I'm doing well I have my favourite Blue Oyster Cult tracks down to a Top 50 now ... I'll get there one day, only been 39 years now of working out an order.

    k.... k....

Trust me, i know what you mean. But this song...this song....can only be appreciated by true BOC fans.

    k.... k....

Kat, I think because the first three albums (as BOC) are so strong & have a similar feel (despite massive musical variations at times) it's easy for the tracks to melt into one mass of greatness (especially when it's decades since you heard the songs for the first time). I have come back a few times recently to listen to this one & it's a wonderful track from Joe. I have put some comments elsewhere about Joe's thoughts on writing this song from Popov's book. I really can pick out about 50 great tracks from BOC, just that good.

    k.... k....

I agree Kat.  This one won't be appreciated by your average classic rock station listener.  This is uniquely BOC (they have a large number of such songs!).

    k.... k....

Kat / RoeserFan - This is certainly one of the best tracks on Tyranny I think, I can remember how awestruck I was with this song back in 78 when I bought the album (with a great slick inner sleeve with band photos & some great written mumbo jumbo about failed experiments & mutations, only our BOC could do that!).
BTW check out "Blue Oyster Cult live in Paris 1975" on here if you haven't seen it? Incredible On Your Feet era BOC footage that features gems like Flaming Telepaths, Last Days, ME 262 etc .. it's stunning ...)

  18. R.... ....

    This tune is so cool

  19. B.... B....

Sounds like it flew directly out of some wicked cool graphic novel.

  20. J.... G....

As a BOC fan, this song still eludes me.  I love it, but I'm missing something about what wings wetted down is.  The attempt to stop something?

    J.... G....

John Galt a bird with wetted wings (supposedly) can't fly, so perhaps the futility of life?

    J.... G....

to me, it always conjured up the image of a crippled angel. on the surface it's about birds, but the meaning is probably more metaphorical

    J.... G....

John, Joe says he used the adapted poems of Pablo Neruda (borrowed a book from a housemate at their place at Great Neck, Long Island) & he mentions fusing the end of the Vietnam war into that imagery. He says he "found some nice phrases & mixed them with his own phrases". No great interpretations & no political message from him, he was happy with the song. It's a beauty alright ............

    J.... G....

    Imagery.
    Use your imagination.
    Can't "fly" with "wet wings"

    The commitment to
    "in the end"
    is powerful too
    Weez all gonna die
    Puts things in perspective

(maybe we don't really die, only our bodies and minds do, neither of which are WHO WE TRULY ARE anyways)
    see- Nisargadatta

  21. W.... W....

Great song - and a very tough challenge to play along to.

  22. J.... J....

3 people are entitled to their own opinion and should not be insulted for having one the differs from mine

    J.... J....

    no, fuk 'em! LOL

    J.... J....

Maybe they didn't like the doomy wolf howl at the start.

    B.... H....

The Saddos are breeding now ... Inbreeding ???

Some people will never get the Greatness of this band even when it is so blatantly obvious as right here ...

    m.... p....

    COOL Jaek!

  29. m.... ....

This was amazing at 16, baked, with headphones.  But at 46, baked and with headphones, it's just so much fucking better. Amazing what time, wisdom and a little humility can do

    m.... ....

    how is the bakery business?

    m.... ....

Kirk Hill he mean high on weed! :)

    m.... ....

Try doing it without being baked.

  30. u.... ....

love this song. i saw them in dallas a couple of times in the late 70s when they had their lazer show.

    u.... ....

I must have been a BOC freak. Saw them 2 times in Little d, 3 in the Fort, and even once at 6 Flags. Still a fan, ( and the Laser show was awesome!)

    u.... ....

Bad ass. You And me both. They had to cancel the laser show.

    u.... ....

+usscott The movie "The Stoned Age" kind of pokes fun at the fact that a few people took a laser to the eyeball etc.

    u.... ....

I saw 'em 3 times in the late seventies. They had a million dollar giant holographic laser light show which was the best in the world at the time. Sometimes they would stop playing in the middle of a song just to hear the crowd. We all went nuts.
    Those were iconic times!

  31. K.... S....

    love it!!!!!!!!!

  32. K.... K....

. . .the voices sound deadly
    sometimes i hear
    echoes of empires
spread throughout the sky. . .

  33. m.... ....

opening riff def a nod to sabbath

    m.... ....

This is an extremely heavy song.

  34. g.... ....

Tyranny & Mutation is the the only BOC album which includes "The" before Blue Oyster Cult in their band name. Learn something new every day.

  35. j.... l....

bravo and kudos 2 sandy and the boys...i'm usually a southern rock man, but boc has encapsulated an era of my life...(1972)....where's al and jo bouchard ???..i suppose in stellar flight...

Must say (as i say on most albums listen to atm hehe) Its REALLY good,
And fact remains: The only ones could get away with electric drums all of a sudden is? Not KISS. Not VH. Not Not.
So where do i send my hollow head?

Btw.. I looked at the avatar now and huh?
Do you live in Stockholm - Huddinge, and on occasions listen to the name Tubbe?

I finally decided..if i had to pick one band for best ever: Blue Öyster Cult!

  40. C.... ....

  44. l.... ....

Blue oyster cult was ahead of their times.

  45. m.... ....

i'm surprised that no-one mentioned that this is supposed to be an allusion to one of neruda's poems from 'canto general'

  46. R.... ....

This is their real masterpieces...when I hear 'burning for you' I want to put someones head in a blender!....is that wrong of me? o_0

    R.... ....

Yes & No ... why not be able to appreciate both era's ??
Yes 70-75 was stunning & sublime (I include the Electra SFG album as well) but there was plenty of great stuff afterwards as well.

    R.... ....

I like how BÖC sounds so different on each album. Almost like different bands. I like Burnin for you, but not as much as this stuff.

  47. T.... ....

BOC #1 greatest rock band just one of their masterpieces

  48. J.... D....

    Their best song

  49. T.... M....

    Right on!

  50. P.... ....

I had no idea BOC had made so many songs!
Everyone knows don't fear the reaper and burnin' for you, but wow....

A lot of BOC songs have illuminati symbolism in the lyrics, and several are seemingly sang from the perspective of a fallen angel. But what a band, amiright? I was born mid-70's, so I got to hear a lot of good music growing up.

    P.... ....

PainHoarder - There's "good music" and then there's BOC .........

Dozens of great songs from 1968-2001.

  51. M.... N....

@KyleJS30 there is, its called you tube.... i love listening to all of my 70's hard rock classics!! its all there brother, just kick back on a sunday afternoon and surf your ass off!!

  52. M.... N....

@bassmanjoe i dig what youre saying, boc songs are unique to their composers, from the bloom rockers to the bouchard horror films, to laniers pop songs to bucks guitar epics, its what makes boc BOC!!

  53. T.... ....

If you were there, Like I was, then you know what this album meant to us.The mystery of the Red and the Black. We saw them 6 times on the first 3 tours and 3 BEST albums!!!!

  54. C.... W....

    B.O.C. B.O.C. B.O.C.
    The voices sound deadly
    sometimes I hear
    echoes of vampires
    spread through-out the sky

    C.... W....

    Echoes of empires

  55. B.... ....

Definitely a classic & one of my favs by them. Thanks.

  56. W.... ....

@mondo56: Don't forget Godzilla. That's because the brainwashed masses only pay attention to whatever Clearchanel tells them to listen to.

  57. b.... ....

@Drizzlerman You sick, man! ;-) Wings slathered down...drizzling on the grill!

  58. O.... ....

Discovered this going through my dads vinyl. I love this fuckin song and I love this fuckin album.

  59. D.... ....

@greeneyefull I know dude, three men in black said for me to not to report this as well.

  60. b.... ....

I love this tune, they have so many other great songs to offer other than the hits. Joe and Albert are my favorite writers in the band. They seem to write the darker material which i love. I love the darker stuff, but i love all of there music. 1972-1982 is the best era hands down!!!

  61. D.... ....

He apparently was a pretty wacky guy and possibly the basis for Travis Bickle in Taxi Driver because he was a loner and a cab driver after either dropping out or graduating from Stony Brook University, and those firts two B.O.C. album covers are the only ones he did for the band and he sort of was dropped from their surrounding after he was questioned in a crime that was committed and they we're feeling Sandy Pearlman in particular that Gawlik could be trouble to keep around, so they ditched him

    D.... ....

Never heard that about a crime issue. I really like his 2 covers. They helped Blue Oyster Cult get noticed.
    He named the 2nd album.
The site Hot Rails to Hell has quite a bit on Gawlik.

  62. D.... ....

On a side note I think this song is about Church's Chicken serving spicy honey barbecue wings and a bunch of black dudes on horses being pursued by an army of vengeful mutant birds for wanting to devour their dead siblings. Revenge of the chickens because it all turns around in the end.

  63. A.... ....

As much as I've loved this song and whole album, the record art is so Freemason and awesome! ...still one of my favourites forever!

  64. D.... ....

Such a gloomy song makes me think of cemeteries on stormy days and Gothic architecture and crypts filled with skeletons, cobwebs and bats

  65. A.... F....

I never saw the video you are speaking of, but the structure on the cover of Tyranny seems to me to be the great Temple of Solomon.

  66. m.... 5....

Too bad they are remembered only for "Reaper" and "Burnin' for You"

  67. A.... E....

    Great tune.
Anyone reckon theres a similarity with the pyramidal structure on the cover and the structure in the Killers video for Spaceman?

  68. B.... A....

This was maybe the most philosophical song in their catalogue. And its not strange, because Albert Bouchard (who probably wrote the lyrics) is a very intellectual type.

  69. B.... I....

This is a great song. What's it about though? lol

  70. B.... A....

    Nice solos as well.

  71. B.... A....

Me too. Who sings this song?

    B.... A....

    Boz Ajanovic joe bouchard

    B.... A....

Yes, who also wrote the lyrics ...

  72. O.... ....

I like the riff on this song.
