Blue Oyster Cult - Unknown Tongue Lyrics

There was no light shining through the window
As Margaret lie in bed
She was wearing cotton pajamas
A crucifix above her head
She awoke from a dream
Her eyes were open
Her lips were moving
In the dark

Speak to me in many voices
Make them all sound like one
Let me see your sacred mysteries
Reveal to me the unknown tongue
Reveal to me the unknown tongue

She put her hands upon her breasts
And they were small and hard and young
And everywhere she touched she felt a fire
Waiting for the answer that must surely come
Is this the way to love?
Or is this just the way to die?

Speak to me in many voices
Make them all sound like one
Let me see your sacred mysteries
Reveal to me the unknown tongue
Reveal to me the unknown tongue

Then she took her father's razor
And watched it cut into her palm
She put her hand up to her mouth
To taste the blood so holy and warm
She got up in the morning
Put on her dress, and patent leather shoes
Ate her cereal and kissed her mother
Caught the bus and went to school

Speak to me in many voices
Make them all sound like one
Let me see your sacred mysteries
Reveal to me the unknown tongue
Reveal to me the unknown tongue

  6. Del Shoemaker

She caught the bus. Our children are out there! Hope the take pity on us!

    Killer_Indigo

    Very ironic:).....

  9. Don Matejek

Reminded me of the first Halloween movie!

  10. Mark Boyd

My fave BOC album. Something about the whole thing...the songs, the packaging, everything just wrapped in mystery. BOC has numerous excellent albums, but for some reason this is the one I come back to more than any other. Thanks for posting this.

I wish i could understand the lyrics full out. Not easy when your not from Usa.

  12. Chris Damon

Another twisted tale from the greatest band on Earth. These guys were so unique. There will never be another band as amazing as my beloved Blue Oyster Cult. Long live BOC!!!!

    Killer_Indigo

Yeah, it’s about a 17 year old catholic girl experimenting with masturbation and palm-cutting at 3 am lol

  13. Dwight Plock

Such a cool SciFi band with a great guitarist!

  14. William Waldrop

Boy,if a band put out a song like this nowadays they would be 'beat down' by the media for the rest of their careers,,,,

    Steven Wilkinson

Ha, BOC have maybe a dozen songs that could offend the public & media if they could work them all out .. ironically one of the ones that does (Don't Fear) the Reaper shouldn't do but gets constantly misread as advocating suicide when in fact it has a totally different & reasonable message ..

  15. Mike Pastor. K

Their music is great but BOC is the best story telling Rock band ever. Every song has compelling lyrics.

  16. James Hein

    Wow. . . I've liked this song (checks the likes) . . . um . . . 482 times apparently. :-)

This is the most magnificent song ever written about jilling off.

  17. Grant Bear1

Thought this might be about devil stuff but its probably just about heroin.

    Steven Wilkinson

No it's not a song about drugs. It's about a young girl's introduction to her sexual awakening without having had the necessary information from her parents before it happened ... she therefore can only relate it to an almost supernatural occurrence ....
Really isn't all that obvious here ???

    Grant Bear1

Wow! That makes sense. Like the guy in Black Blade having his sword speak to him. Reveal to me!

    Steven Wilkinson

The guy in Black Blade is Elric the Eternal Champion as written by co-writer Michael Moorcock. It all adds up with BOC eventually if you have decades to spend trying to suss it out.

  18. Gage King

I just can't decide if Cultösaurus Erectus or Secret Treaties is my favorite BÖC album..

    Del Shoemaker

Secret Treaties for sure. This one was lots of leftover stuff from trying to get on the Heavy Metal movie sound track.

    Duncan Bleak

They are neck & neck. But ultimately if only one is chosen, it must be Secret Treaties.

    Rhys Weaver

    Secret treaties

  19. Bonnie Newman

    r I p Alan

  20. Del Shoemaker

    patent leather shoes!

  21. phydeauxddog

    try out shooting sharks

  22. Chuck Fieldski

My all time favorite BOC song !!

    Marcie Belfi

    YES!!!! A million times over

    Del Shoemaker

    Really? Why?

  23. Steven Wilkinson

BOC at their smartest and most twisted, gloriously succinct little story. Their musicianship is always a given but when added to such a creepy, perfectly executed tale it's one of their finest studio tracks.

  24. derbystardom

It says Margaret. But, it is the story of Patti Smith. Innocent Catholic girl who was seduced by Rock N Roll.

  25. Steve Garland

Their most socially import song . . . .so many "slaves" to dogma and non reasoning ideas --LOL -- look at the recent elections!  LMAO

  26. Vital Signs

Used to m......... to this song. Kinda weird stuff

    deemdoubleu

I used to mow the grass to this too really weird that.

  27. Ângelo Andrade

is this music about demonic possession?

    MannyOfMentulla

Ângelo José Santana Andrade I'm pretty sure it's about a Catholic who woke up and was suddenly turned to the "evil ways". She began realizing the pleasure she could have and went so far as to try and drink blood. The part of her change could be a possession or ghostly interaction, as you could guess from the chorus. It seems as though the chorus is Margaret speaking to ghost in this case. She was told to do these things by the spirit. A deeper level could be that she believed that the ghost was in fact an apparition of God in front of her. This song is one of the greatest pieces of songwriting in the incredible blue oyster cult repertoire of stories.

    Ângelo Andrade

MannyOfMentulla thanks. It was a great analisys... it gave me a new vision about this song... I used to think that it was a simple demonic possession, but there is more in this song that we can see without a more deep interpretation... it's a great song, one of the best. Thanks from Brazil...

    Steve Garland

    NO,  liberation from religious dogma.

    Steve Garland

to the above, not maybe catholic,  in U.S.  the chrasmatic/evangelical versions of religion.   Jerry Falwell sorts

  28. Kevin Mcnamara

Speak to me in many voices!!! Holy shit!!! These guys are just amazing!!! Their genre is almost undefinable. B.O.C.

    Killer_Indigo

0:28 is the best sounding moment!

  29. Del Shoemaker

Sorry, listen to the piano! Freaking talent! Never went to a school that had a dress code but I'm sure it would drive me to another way of life! Evil is just something you were taught to make you afraid! Silly, silly! BOO!

    Steve Garland

So many song they had GREAT piano.

    Del Shoemaker

all bands need a piano! Hey? It means that someones mom made them make music!

  30. Basil II Macedonia

I bet this song was popular with the PMRC folks!!

  31. stuart irvin

Peter you hit it right on the head. What is wrong with ppl that BOC wasn't seen as among the rock gods of the 70's. Often discounted as top 40 because of Zillagod and Reaper these guys were deep and rich in sound and lyric. So many missed the GOOD STUFF "b" tracks> Gotta give them their due folks!

    Cali Chicano

stuart irvin well there were many great bands at the time as well. Just seen Blue Oyster Cult for the first this on july 17, 2018 pnly reason why i went to the state fair

    Del Shoemaker

None of their good stuff ever made it to the radio!

    FrankinChicken B

    Time to play the b-sides

    Darin McNew

They are still the Rock Gods.. This stuff is timeless..

  32. Richard Lamb

WOW-- One of those B.O.C tunes you just want to hear them keep rippin it at the very end--full tilt gave it just another 5 seconds

    Steven Wilkinson

Richard ... one of the things that I have learnt about listening to Blue Oyster Cult for 39 years is that they have incredible judgement ... they NEVER over play or throttle the life out of something. Very few heavy rock bands in history have this admirable trait ...

  33. Random Gryffindor

Beginning rift sounded like it was going be that green day song

  34. Art Vale

    ...Kid needs an exorcism.

    Killer_Indigo

Art Vale Thy Exorcisms Shall Fail

  35. creamcheese65

Like a musical Twilight Zone episode. Their lyrics were often the most twisted and disturbing.

    Thomas Hyle

+creamcheese65 "like there is a horror movie or a horror book, [heavy metal] is to be a horror music"

    Steven Wilkinson

CreamC - Monsters & Sole Survivor would also have made great Twilight Zone episodes as well ...

  36. Iain Sutherland

I bought this on vinyl when it first came out. I haven't heard it for 30 odd years.

    Barah Holloway

+Iain Sutherland The way to love........ or just a way to die? A sacred mystery it seems.

  37. sergio barron

    puertas dimensionales

  38. Del Shoemaker

BOC reminding all that they know how to rock! Piano !Listen!

  39. Diego Leija

Cuando oigo esta canción tengo ganas de viajar

  40. jaxxstraw

The best BOC album. (Imaginos is a truncated epic, but not really a BOC album anyway.) This one was their peak.

    Joe LaPorte

+jaxxstraw Bah...like with many bands it was their first album.

    Barah Holloway

+Joe LaPorte Yeah and it's off the hook awesome!

    Barah Holloway

    +Joe LaPorte First album???

    wasted/time/traveler

this one and "fire of unknown origin" are my favorites...although B.O.C never really had a bad album...

  42. Billy Pilgrim

The boys are so tight on this whole album.
    Ear Candy

  43. Peter Dierker

One of the greatest motherfuckinn albums that no one has heard of because people are apparently retarded

    skeggjold gunnr

+Peter Dierker If we don't expose our kids to our music, who else will?

    Del Shoemaker

Was a stretch for B'O.C. at the time! Sure nobody actually cared but the real fans!

    wasted/time/traveler

you got that right, an unknown gem...

    phydeauxddog

Peter Dierker Only thing better than a BOC album is another BOC album.

    Brendon Halverson

Peter Dierker Whah are you talking about? This album hit #77 in Canada, #34 in the U.S., and #12 in the U.K.

  44. Dan Ptaszek

Damn, Blue Oyster Cult rocks! Cultosaurus Erectus is one of their best albums!

    AngryPostmanSthlm2

And this is no opinion, its a statement.  Actually they are so fokken amazing it can make annoyed at times..

    Tony Ponce

+Infinite Space They are all great albums when I first saw them in 1972 and 15 more times through the years, my favorite time was the 1976 tour in San Diego sports arena with the lasers off the Crystal was breath taking like only the cult is and they will be in El Cajon Jan. 24th 2016 & Iwill see them for the 17th time, BOC 4ever!!!

  45. Viktor Fridell

can someone name any similar songs to this one , ive been searching alot of boc songs but the only one I really like is this so any songs from boc that sounds like this one would be perfect

    thanks

    Ruben Saenz

try nosferatu on spectres album, morning final and revenge of vera gemini off of Agents of fortune album

    Alan Kors

  46. SECRET CRUSH **

she ate her cereal ...kissed her mother...caught the bus and went to school.....VERY COOL

    Turbo Lives In my heart

SECRET CRUSH ** I always liked to ad-lib the lyrics: "copped a buzz and went to school"

  47. Magnus Soevgaard

  51. surething baby

Fantastic song- second best song on the album behind "Black Blade".

    Steven Wilkinson

The best one on a fine album - Black Blade is up there as well though!

  52. Gatoncho :3

Hahaha that sounds cool! annoy them so much that they brought you headphones xD

  53. Wolfpackgaming

I perhaps have one of those too...b.o.c. forever!

  54. Ersa1a

Oh yeah, one more comment.....Needs more cowbell!

  55. Ersa1a

I have a cultosaurus flacciduss in my pants right now, though it doesn't take much to get him erectus.....perhaps a Viagra....

  56. Ersa1a

I saw this band at the Country Club in Reseda in 1984 under the moniker "soft white underbelly", a faux name they used sometimes when they wanted to play small venues. Don Roeser got really pissed at the audience because they booed the opening act, a comedian, off-stage. He came out and said he was going to make us wait longer because of it. Hey, I didn't boo.....

  57. Basil II Macedonia

This song can't be about suicide anyway because Margaret gets dressed and goes to school after cutting herself.

    BOCfan

Basil II Macedonia no she cuts as an act of repentance for her impure thoughts and acts. Afterwards she carries on as normal, her guilt satisfied by her punishing herself

  58. Wolfpackgaming

I have a cultosaurus erectos in my basement...he eats a lot....

  59. Wolfpackgaming

this is such a hauntingly delightful album...

  60. Francis marK

    BLUE OYSTER CULT ROCKS

  61. CaptainAtomSmasher

haha, I remember writing this comment. Right after I ordered this as my first BOC album. Now I have almost every album.

  62. gerard guero

wow, you bought this album 2 or 3 years before it was published...
    : )

  63. jdwhatman

My favourite BOC song. It still feels like yesterday when this LP came out and I first heard this track.

  64. iugtydrsjxhfiudtr

In the miniature I though the front of it's head was a cupcake 0_o

  65. Lucas Lotti

@aceofspades477 Not trying to annoy you or anything, but,do you know how to punctuate?

  66. BaddBrad61

    Awsome Music

  67. Konstantinos Giannoussis

    supreme melodie

  68. Drizzlerman

Richard Meltzer said this song is about a lust for Catholic women. Being jewish he found Catholic women enticing because they'd say things like 'Mary mother of god!' during sex and such.

  69. outlawcountryman

@MrOlsen2010 if im thinking what your thinking i beleive you can hear that sound at the end of the song black blade

  70. byan85

    Dark and sexy. Vintage BOC.

  71. blarrrrgehh

Twisted perverted poetry under the guise of rock.........The best!

  72. SPAZZOBOXER

@Neopersonageguy Yes, I am very aware of Don Roeser's well documented explanations as to the origins of the classic he penned. In the comment I wrote, I was referring to religious groups' ( especially the Roman Catholic Church ) knee-jerk,self serving, single minded "Suicide" interpretation. I can clearly remember their well orchestrated & instantaneous public relations assault of mock outrage & Chicken Little logic. Their ignorance indicated they had never bothered to listen to the entire song.

  73. Donald Bradley

Dhamra said "I felt that I had just achieved some kind of resonance with the psychology of people when I came up with that, I was actually kind of appalled when I first realized that some people were seeing it as an advertisement for suicide or something that was not my intention at all. It is, like, not to be afraid of it (as opposed to actively bring it about). It's basically a love song where the love transcends the actual physical existence of the partners"

  74. Donald Bradley

@SPAZZOBOXER Actually "Don't Fear The Reaper" has absolutely nothing to do with suicide

  75. dannyalba1

I used to sing this song to myself as I bombed along on my X7 back in the early 80s...those were the days; much better than today.

  76. TheDrunkenHer0

HAHHAHAHAHAHAHA..Had no clue this was THEIR song...

    Yes, I already smacked myself....

  77. Tartersauce101

    my mind = blown

  78. Dean Wright

Pure brilliance and my favourite BOC album by far.

  79. Konstantinos Giannoussis

    supreme melodie super boc

  80. RapIsDeadly

Haha...my wife always used to freak out when this song came on because of some of the lyrics. "Cut the razor into her palm" "Breasts so small, hard, and young"

"I'm not listening to this...blah blah blah"

  81. magtownrep

Some of my favorite lyrics in any song ever right here. I love having that moment where you double take and say "did he just say her breasts were hard and young?" I was always bummed though that there was no guitar solo in this one.

  82. John Pack

    great song

  83. yourunclehank1

SPECTRES - for those who want to hear more than Godzilla

  84. davegrohllover

    Love this song

  85. NewMount68

The menacing voice of Eric Bloom may be the best rock voice ever. This song is pure greatness.

  86. NewMount68

The menacing voice of Eric Bloom may be the best rock voice ever. This song is pure greatness.

  87. Magnum

    fave track on the album.

  88. Drizzlerman

B.O.C. are genius with the dark themes. It has to do with Catholicism, a girls first period, loss of virginity, and self mutilation.

    BOCfan

Drizzlerman I’m guessing she cuts in order to punish herself for her impure thoughts and acts! Classic catholic behavior, among some. Then after her act of repentance she carries on....just another day. It’s really sad that people live like this, so much guilt.

  89. nate556

    @cuttlefisch

they did... but that's illegal ;P

  90. witchfindergeneral13

    It kicks ass!
listen to the vocals on the fade out..Awesome!

  91. Ghost Cookie

Well I am totally with MiddletownDreamz on his theory and I to have to pick on this after studying the occult & magick for several decades as well as the arts, physics, psychology, philosophy, cybernetics, & symbolism. It could be a coincidence (synchronicity), but it is not meaningless, in fact this means the collective is trying to get your attention.

  92. TheMentosMan13

My FAVORITE B.O.C. song, hands down!

  93. Konstantinos Giannoussis

a love you7 the song kosta

  94. Basil II Macedonia

I remember Eric Bloom once saying that he's happy for people to burn their albums "....as long as they pay for them first. Our back catalogue could do with a boost!!!"
    lol

  95. Basil II Macedonia

I'd love to meet this Margaret!!!

  96. Basil II Macedonia

    What Flood do you mean??
