Blue Oyster Cult - Then Came The Last Days Of May Lyrics

Parched land no desert sand, sun was just a dot
And a little bit of water goes a long way, 'cause it's hot (it's hot)
Three good buddies were laughing and smoking in the back
Of a rented Ford
They couldn't know they weren't going far

Each one with the money in his pocket
Could go out and buy himself a brand new car
But they all held the money they had
Money they hoped would take them very far

The sky was bright, a traffic light, now and then a truck
And they hadn't seen a cop around all day (what luck)
They brought everything they needed
Bags and scales to weigh the stuff
The driver said the border's just over the bluff

It wasn't until the car suddenly stopped
In the middle of a cold and barren plain
And the other guy turned and spilled
Three boys blood, did they know a trap had been laid?

They're ok, the last days of may, I'll be breathing dry air
I'm leaving soon, the others are already there (all there)
You wouldn't be interested in coming along, instead of staying here
They say the west is nice this time of year, that's what they say

It's not underrating if you're really into musicit's not underrated and if he really in the music you know of this song so you have been led to this destination and you know your music

Very under-rated band. Not quite the best, certainly not quite up to the standards of the Beatles, Stones, Zeppelin or Sabbath but really not that much inferior either. Interesting lyrics, harmonious arrangements, but a few dull songs here and there. Considering how music went down the tubes after the glory days of the 60's and early 70's when these guys were playing their songs remain highly competitive compared to other offerings of the time period like punk. Along with Dire Straits and Guns n Roses one of the last bands whose albums you could mostly listen cover to cover. They are really good, like B+/A- good. I am surprised how far lesser bands have enjoyed more staying power and airplay. Shocked the only songs you hear on the radio are Reaper & Burning for You.

When I get in a dark, melancholic mood nothing gives me the fix like BOC.

    M.... C....

@Steven Wilkinson I never saw live shows from either; am comparing studio albums which are more important to staying power which was the point I originally made. I'm 41 years old and I haven't ever seen 8mm film. I'm well educated, well travelled and have worn a LOT of hats and have only heard it mentioned 5-6 times before. When staying power is concerned if you have to find a band's best work in an obsolete and obscure media like 8mm film then the band is basically lost to history. This doesn't make me happy, just an objective observation as to why the Beatles, Stones, Sabbath and Zeppelin still get so much airtime and BOC almost none.

Don't get me wrong I am a big BOC fan but when playing a Beatles almost no one ever says "This song sucks change it". Not so with BOC. Most people who know me and have known me for so long by now have just asked not to put BOC in or just leave the Satellite Radio on the Beatles, 60's, 70's, 80's channels or Ozzy's Boneyard where you never hear BOC. Big difference.

In the end they were a good to very good band and their best work is pretty cool. But they weren't consistent enough about being that strong and interesting compared to other competitors which sadly is what has condemned them to obscurity.

    M.... C....

@Mike Coglione Soooo ... I take it after all that "deflecting" that the answer is none of them could ..... which is the right answer .... thanks.

    M.... C....

Steven Wilkinson it’s ok. For their artistry alone they deserve the status the Beatles, Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath have. I feel Blue Öyster Cult ARE better than all those other bands and often overshadowed by the previous bands and Queen and Pink Floyd but that’s just my bias I guess so what do I really know right?

    M.... C....

@Steven Wilkinson No deflection on my part I think you missed the point. Think big picture. If a band's best work is so obscure then they too will be condemned to obscurity which is exactly what happened to the BOC.

    M.... C....

@King Infinite You are bang on .... I get sick of the "Reps" of some these quoted overshadowing what matters ... our ears .... this one & dozens of other BOC songs are WELL beyond those others ...
Obscure ? ... I am the Walrus, Yellow Submarine, Lucy in the Sky ... wtf ....

  14. B.... K....

Please, i beg you. Please help me find more songs like this.

I love the heavy reverb/echo on the snare drum panned hard to one side. It's not often a snare hit sounds atmospheric and moody, but this one is - perfect for this song!

I love the way the drums are engineered on this song. There's a nice delay and a gated reverb. You can especially hear it on the snare.

Been listening to this since the debut album was released in '72 ......never gets old.....just better. "Last Days of May" is an absolute masterpiece.

  62. T.... ....

My birthday is May 29th, guess this’ll be my theme song

  63. T.... ....

The first three BOC albums were my prized possessions. This was the "alternative" music of the day that didn't get the mainstream airplay.

  64. D.... S....

    Helll yeah, me too!

    awesome

Buck wrote the song & sings it! Based on true story of 3 Stony Brook University students killed in a drug deal gone bad.

    J.... F....

All three were shot ... two died & the survivor helped to prosecute the two brothers who shot them ... that's the story.

It was the 15th of May 1973 when my buddy returned to the land of the living from the jungles of Vietnam. We hopped into his SS Chevell and hit the country roads nearby. I could see his stress melt away as we passed the pipe and this tune played on.
