Blue Oyster Cult - The Vigil Lyrics

In a purple vision
Many thousand years ago
I saw the silent stranger
Walk the earth alone

Twenty-seven faces
With their eyes turned to the sky
I've got a camera
And an airtight alibi

I know they're out there
We see them coming
Faster than the speed of light
They greet us in the dead of the night

Somewhere, someday, someone
They'll be light and sound
They'll alight on the ground
On which we stand

Somewhere, someday, someone
Will help us to survive
They're gonna show us hell
And bring us back alive

Well, I'm no poet, but I can't be fooled
The lies don't count, the whispers do
I hear the whispers on the wind
They say the earth has fallen due

We run in circles
Our days are numbered
Every night I look away
To the heavens and I pray

Come to us
Come to us

Our lights are dim
Our roads are crumbling
And we don't know what to do
We're sick and tired
And dying to meet you
'Cause we bit off more than
We can chew

Blue Oyster Cult The Vigil Comments
  1. D.... S....

    Pretty good song.

  2. N.... ....

Man I haven’t heard this song in decades. Spending time by my cousin who just pulled this out on vinyl and I have to come here to check it out as his turntable is down. Awesome song.

  3. T.... H....

Glad to see at least some others are sick of seeing these posts claiming some band is underrated. WTF does that even mean? Go find whoever it is you think did the underrating and set them straight ok?

  4. N.... E....

Why boc is not in rock hall of fame its a crime

  5. j.... k....

BOC played this when I saw them 2 weeks ago. An unexpected surprise!!!

  6. J.... C....

Why isn't this song played on the radio? It should be because it's one of the greatest songs of all time and definitely B.O.C. career best recording and there's a few to mention!

  7. D.... F....

Of course the guitar work is stellar. But no one is commenting on just how good Bouchard's drumming is on this track. Some of his best studio work IMHO.

  8. k.... ....

Saw them in Shippensburg Pa may 17th 19 they played this awesome they also did Bucks Boggie I was amazed!!!!

    k.... ....

Buck's Boogie (live) from On Your Feet Or On Your Knees is what I'd play in my head during workouts on the H.S. swim team. That's how I rolled.

  9. R.... B....

When I listen to this song while walking down the street, the beat after the first minute of the song makes me feel like I have attitude with each step. Haha!

  10. M.... W....

Hmm ... first time I've heard this and I've come over all goosebumps.

    M.... W....

Search for the live version on here from 1979 ... it's even more powerful.

  24. E.... D....

BOC don't do ordinary, no matter what song they come out with, they take it in so many directions and include so many styles throughout, all that coupled with some excellent guitar work

    E.... D....

    I agree with 100 percent.

    E.... D....

  40. C.... D....

"The Vigil" has long been one of my favorite BOC tunes. I think "Mirrors" is such a cool album. I bought it in July of 1979 and never felt a bit of disappointment in it. I never cared for the title track, but other than that "Mirrors" kicked butt! It's not "Secret Treaties", but what is? This song just takes me where I want to be every time.

  41. j.... t....

yeah it a place that far away an that is great

  47. D.... C....

One my favorites love this band who else out there has a BOC tattoo?

    D.... C....

I don't but if I was going to have a tattoo then a BOC symbol would be one of only two that I would have ....

  48. r.... s....

how bout some dominance and submission

  49. i.... s....

The "come to us" part ruined the solo

  50. r.... s....

    B.O.C. SEEN THEM 7 TIMES

  59. T.... ....

Need to see the rest of the car

The mirror by itself is beautiful and I can’t imagine what the rest of the car looks like

  60. P.... D....

    Mirrors, brings back memories

  61. L.... F....

I've seen B.O.C. three times this year and their music is timeless! They are truly worthy of praise!! Great live performers!!

  62. L.... S....

    amazing track!

  63. R.... ....

Words cannot adequately express the greatness of this song.

  64. J.... R....

Just saw Blue Oyster Cult last night and they played this song. Nothing short of amazing!

    J.... R....

Yes they played it for us a few weeks back as well, just wonderful. A massive challenge for Buck to do live but he's up to it still .......

  65. R.... B....

likes the drumwork too between choruses

  66. d.... ....

Youngsters, I did acid with my friends one night and The Vigil was the first song I heard. It was trippy. This BOC album is so old
and we listened it to on 8 track tape. Many of those old friends are dead, but I still love the Vigil. Rest In Peace

  67. J.... B....

3:53 buckethead borrowed this idea for big sur moon no doubt.

  68. s.... s....

GO TO BAND FOR YEARS THE BEST!

  69. K.... H....

    More genius . . .

  70. J.... M....

I always was fond of this music (BOC), but listening to it some 25-30 years later, I have a completely different appreciation. Then, I liked it, drove to it, partied with it. Now, having developed a more mature understanding of music, such as composition, structure, and balance, to name just a few things, I become aware of how beautiful and brilliant this song really is. I was fortunate enough to see these guys in an intimate venue of about a 100 or so people. They were doing an off-label show as "Soft White Underbelly", which is the bands original name. I don't think I even have to tell anyone how that was!

    J.... M....

I agree Jim.  I loved this song instantly in 79, but it has more than withstood the test of time and ranks as one of the great rock compositions ever.

    J.... M....

Lucky you! At least I got to experience a bit of the nineties before music turned to shite.

  71. K.... C....

    Come to us

  72. G.... S....

Just saw them last night and they played The Vigil 😃😃😃😃😃

  73. K.... C....

I love the classic's i'll never forget the day I saw Blue Oyster Cult at Ribfest.

  74. D.... S....

Lights are dim, roads are crumbling! We don't know what to do!

  75. J.... B....

Nibiru is coming soon and days of darkness no sun and the world will cry out to him come to us but he is not whom the world thinks he is.

  76. D.... C....

Best US band ever I love these guys so much I got a BOC tattoo so talented and so under appreciated fuck you rock N roll hall of fame

    D.... C....

Dan ... BOC fans know there isn't a better US rock band throughout that decade from 72-81 ... no one comes close actually ...

  77. k.... j....

guitar lovers like me say thanks

  78. K.... ....

Their most commercial album great sounding album .if you we're going to introduce anybody to BOC this would be the album then slowly play the more complex albums

  79. D.... I....

super great guitar starting near to 3:45. Listen at your own risk. Not responsible for extreme euphoria or out of control convulsions due to listening ecstasy.

  80. g.... ....

This song is so good it's scary. Most bands dont put out a song this great in a career.

    g.... ....

And for Blue Oyster Cult it was just another day at the office in 1979 ... true Greatness at work.

    g.... ....

YOU GOT THAT RIGHT, JEDI KNIGHT! ; )

    g.... ....

    Your damn right 👍

  81. n.... a....

Saw them this past weekend. They played this song, and I was standing right at the front in front of Eric Bloom. That chug of a guitar riff, when Bloom was looking all cool with his shades... No word but awesome.

  82. J.... S....

my favorite Cult song, and I had to choke that out cause there are too many greats.

    J.... S....

    The Subhuman

    J.... S....

Astronomy for me, but this is pretty cool

    J.... S....

Black Blade for me, or... Monsters? FoUO. I'd better stop...

    J.... S....

    Just choose them all.

    J.... S....

Astronomy for e too, but love so many of them..

  83. B.... T....

Heard this one for the first time when I was a kid. Today still rocks and kicks

  84. B.... D....

I have seen them at least 50 times (conservative estimate) On your feet or on your fucking knees!!! #BuckIsGod

    B.... D....

Let's see....50 times 3 guitars...150.  You (and I) have a long way to go to see 3,000 guitars they seem to cry!

  85. C.... L....

just a lot of excellent and right on comments here. BOC has so many great rocking tunes that people just aren't aware of. I have all of their albums, and have probably seen them over 30 times. By far, my favorite band.

  86. J.... R....

Why don 't I ever hear this on the radio ?

    J.... R....

Radio hates BOC! Only play Don't fear the reaper Godzilla and burning for you! People are missing out! BOC is much better than those three songs!

    J.... R....

Jim Russo cause radio DJ's are lazy

    J.... R....

Get away from FM radio. This is heard on satellite. Along with some of the best music you could imagine.

    J.... R....

aGree.  Can't listen to corporate classic rock FM.   Got satellite 12 years ago,  dropped it because of the repetition (like FM) and now on Spotify so I can cut out all the Bon Jovi crap and listen to custom play lists of good artists.

  87. M.... B....

looking for new music, I missed it. still looking for godzoki

  88. D.... S....

    Great guitar work by Buck.
I keep thinking of the relevance of those lyrics to what I see around me. "come for us"

  89. M.... ....

This song sums up Buck Dharma's Work. Elegance, feeling, melody, creativity and freaking skill... in my top 10 BôC songs.

  90. M.... ....

    marvellous marvellous marvellous....

  91. W.... H....

just saw BOC tonight in Akron OH. They played The Vigil and brought the house down! Buck shredded like always. On your feet or on your knees!

  92. P.... J....

The lick at 4:40 is pure Buck Dharma.

    P.... J....

This one actually begins at 4:15, and like so many of Buck's guitar licks it is compact (he fit more in 30 to 45 sec than most could do on an entire song), and it is "oh so smooth" (not a violent hack on the strings). I really believe that's why he's often not mentioned among top rock guitarists. That being "shredders" got all the attention, but Buck used a "scalpel" when playing. His style was precise and effortless.

    P.... J....

you are so right, so great and so underrated. Insane riffing.

  93. D.... B....

Well its been a while since I cranked mirrors - looks like this is the boc album of the week - and therefore, ..... the album of the week.

  94. B.... H....

Sick and tired.........and dying to meet YOU! Yeah

  95. D.... S....

B.O.C was always under rated! Perhaps they knew, and named it cult! Tyranny and Mutation is my favorite, but Mirrors is one you can play at a party and people don't think its even B.O.C. ! Almost went country music sound! Lights are dim roads are crumbling! Only B.O.C ! HA!
Glad to people haven't forgot about them!

    D.... S....

    In a double vision?

    D.... S....

All the way brother... ~Tyranny and Mvtation by The Blve Öyster Cvlt~

    D.... S....

@conjured_up_skeletons Doing a spell check? Haha!

    D.... S....

There's no such thing as underrated or overrated. If a band has a million fans they have a million fans. If a band has 10 fans they have 10 fans. You can't force people to like a band.

    D.... S....

@J.J.? What's up? Why are you such a realist? Don't become jades too soon!

  96. R.... G....

    heck yeah Robb Jammes

  97. B.... B....

Donald Buck Dharma Roeser, is the baddest, greatest guitarists in the world. I call THE MASTER.
