Blue Oyster Cult - Perfect Water Lyrics

Perfect water - the dark wind braids the waves that grays birds.
'Ware the tree. Is this our destiny?
To join our hands at sea - and slowly sink, and slowly think:
This is perfect water, passing over me.

Do you know Jacques Cousteau when they said on the radio
That he hears bells in random order, deep beneath the perfect water?
Love! That is frightening, but still so inviting.
To drown inside a sound that lay so far underground.
And to think... And to think:
This is perfect water, passing over me.

To flow inside the spiral tide;
To drown my eyes like a blind ride.
And to cross the perils of black water -
It waits for me like mother and daughter.
A life of perfect order! A strange and perfect water!
A life of perfect order! A strange and perfect water!

Perfect water. I dream this dream within my deep and warm gulf stream.
Where two blocks of ice melt into my hands like dice,
And I roll seven on the floor of the sea!
And I roll seven on the floor of the sea!
And I feel the perfect water, washing over me.

To flow inside the spiral tide;
To drown my eyes like a blind ride.
And to cross the perils of black water -
It waits for me like mother and daughter.
A life of perfect order! A strange and perfect water!
A life of perfect order! A strange and perfect water!
A life! A strange!
A life! A strange!

  1. Deeper in ice

    Madrid intensifies

  2. james goforth

Ever consider what a monster radio hit this could/should have been? And look at the songs they played instead. Which leads us to the age-old question: Who in God's name DECIDES this???

  3. Cláudio Birnbaum

    Classic !

  4. Desdenova

    I approve

  5. ruthie block

I saw boc in concert always a great show

  6. Thomas Ferrara

    This song is incredible.
    True power and poetry.

  7. GIVE US MOTHER 3

    Me: *starts playing perfect water*
    Everyone else in Africa: ...

    Anios Arkhangelisk

I feel like buying a nice cold bottle of water and playing this song while watching the moon rise now, so that's what I'll do.

    GIVE US MOTHER 3

Anios Arkhangelisk I would like to do that in front of dehydrated African children

Reminds me so much of Rushs Limelight. Both great songs.

  9. Blackwood Richmore

    ❤❤❤❤❤❤

  10. Roger Towle

The innocense and wonder really take you for a ride here!!! The strength and power...a home run of a song for them for sure...love it!!!👍😎🤙🌪🌪❄

  11. Josep Duran

A hint of Lovecraft's Deep Ones perhaps?

  12. jim edenbaum

There is just something special about a Buck Dharma song....

  13. Victor Cruz

Este grupo quiso tocar en México. No sé porque finalmente no toco pero es grandioso. Eso fue hace treinta años atrás. Lastima que no fue comercial.

  14. Justyna Walska

I felt in love with this song. After Don't fear the reaper I thought nothing is gonna astonish me like this, but I was wrong. This masterpiece is a pure perfection.

  15. cattybound2011

This album fell into an unfortunately juxtaposed chasm in musical history. Resulting, it never got the attention, let alone the praise it deserved. I can't speak for the spectrum of rock but there were a few other gems that were taken as great but not for all the true artistry they exhibited. The other album of which I speak is BOSTON, "Third Stage". They played Amanda until all Amanda's everywhere wanted to kill themselves, but left other masterpieces like "Cool the Engines" alone.

  16. Phyllis Bronock

    Good later BOC stuff.
I saw them at the Warehouse, in New Orleans, during their "On Your Feet or On Your Knees" tour.
The Warehouse was the kind of place with no seats, just carpeted floor. Sitting in rows on the floor, the joints were passed up and down the row. No one cared about who's stuff it was, or who smoked it. The straights had their own rows. Straight, stoned, tripping or drunk; no one cared. Even the cops were cool back then. As long as you kept your 'partaking' on the inside of the place, no hassles.
Even the opening acts, yes, two of them, were good. A German jazz rock group called Passport, and an English prog-folk group called Strawbs.
Then the man comes out at the front of the stage and yells: "On your feet or on your knees for the Blue Oyster Cult!"
Memory is a bit hazy about it all, for obvious reasons, but I think that the first song was "Hot Rails to Hell."
A good time was had by all!
As we tell our grandkids: "There once was a Golden Age...."
At this point we, my SO and I, feel that we are the real "Veterans of the Psychic Wars." For one thing, we didn't have to be as paranoid and fearful back then as we see the younger folk of today being. When everything around you is actually watching you, paranoia is a rational response. If BOC, or the Bouchards do have an album in them, I hope they do a song about the 'IoT.'
    Be sweet!

  17. Dr Yx

    Dawn music Bright rocknroll!

  18. Brian Watson

I'm guessing the band are cool with this site

  19. Alan Peters

Fucking LOVE this song....this is a very underrated album in itself...BOC are incapable of producing a bad album, or a bad song for that matter

  20. Blaž Zdešar

This song still gives me goosebumps even after having heard it for 10.000 times

  21. Turbo Lives In my heart

Sounds a little like 'Shooting Shark' on some of the riffs.

  22. james goforth

    Masterpiece. Their finest hour.

    Steven Wilkinson

    Just one of many ....

  23. Clayton Chaney

    a well constructed song

  24. randall scott burress

iworkedm hard and they sold me to the farm

  25. randall scott burress

  26. Karl Lux Lusitania

listening to in total sensorial abduction mode. This is alchemically encrypted.

  27. nonamesleftdammit

Nothing Lovecraftian about this one, unless Jacques Cousteau disturbs Cthulhu beneath the perfect water.

  28. Brad Morgan

USN boomers jesus christ stand down!!!!!

  29. Esther Nunes

Perfect song to Jotaro's death scene in "JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, Part 6: Stone Ocean" anime adaptation

  30. Turbo Lives In my heart

I would stand in a blizzard to see them play again.

    John Houlgate

They've seen suns that were freezing and lives that were through, but they're still burning for you.

    Ray Smith

Glasgow, February 23 2019. I'll be there, you?...

  31. Turbo Lives In my heart

There is simply not one song that BOC has that I won't dislike or listen to. Erik Bloom and Buck Dharma kick everyone's ass when it comes to voice and guitar, EB on keyboard. I have seen them 8 times since the late 1970's, put on such great shows, and always something new. Please come back to Davenport, Iowa. You know we love you here.

  32. BOCfan

BOC was just trying to be “hip” with this album name and related videos. Ninja crap was everywhere in the mid/late 80’s. They did a video for “dancin” with skaters and shit. Just trying to be relevant to the younger kids.
Overall there are some good tracks on this record for what it was.
Perfect Water is a great tune.
But the real BOC was with Albert and Joe, both too important to the band to be replaced.

  33. randall scott burress

not that spid to jump in the lake where wires got loose from the electric company if i want it got to decide on my own where i jump into the currant

  34. randall scott burress

  36. randall scott burress

  37. Dave Birch

    Unbelievable seen them 6 times.

  38. randall scott burress

If you step in it it squishes in your toes and you have to take a bath with me

  39. The1WhoKnowsTheTruth

BOC are in a class all by themselves.  Man.....Buck really brings it here don't he.

  40. Chris Damon

This song is just excellent. One of the few shining moments on an otherwise disappointing release. I always loved this one (along with "Dancin' In The Ruins" and "White Flags").

    Steven Wilkinson

Outside writers due to Albert being fired & low input from Sandy ... having said that Dancin in the Ruins is good enough to be a legit Buck Dharma song ... Beat em up & Rock not War are just not BOC songs .. they are the run of the mill stuff that fans of this band listen to BOC to in order to avoid ... personally I love Madness to the Method & Spy in the House of Night is good .. but it's Buck so it's a given .. & Perfect Water is majestic ...

  41. randall scott burress

Behind the tree ? nobody saw the saw-dust scream?

  42. yrly59e

I was lucky to see this done live, this is a guitar masterpiece

i am so sorry bro, but this is not the lyrics. what you have was a bad interp from a site where some one posted there take on them. this is the real lyrics from the only source i truly trust. the band web site it's self.

    Perfect water

A life A life of perfect order

A life A life of perfect order
The strange The strange and perfect water

  54. randall scott burress

Are you guy's going to let me in the club?***

    Steven Wilkinson

    It's a Cult so that's a no ....

  55. Alan Peters

    Wasn't this Joe's last album?

    Steven Wilkinson

The demo version is on here.. Albert got fired on 20th August 1981 in England .. I would guess he worked on it after that but i'm not sure without checking ... only really Buck & Eric do a lot of vocals on the final Imaginos release along with Albert.

    Alan Peters

Steven Wilkinson I've got the demo version i did some reaading last night i found a few things out i mean i knew when Albert got fired what happened with Imaginos is after Fire of unknown Origin Imaginos was to be the next album but the version they submitted to the record company got rejected so that's how Club Ninja came about then after years of legal rangling and recording and re recording they released the version of Imaginos we have now with many guest including Aldo Nova, Joe Satriani and many others.Albert is credited with playing guitar and backup vocals on the whole album and Joe like you said Bkng Vocals and keyboards.

    Steven Wilkinson

It's amazing how good Imaginos sounds given it's history .. but nearly all BOC albums are very strong)

    Alan Peters

Steven Wilkinson absolutely! I will say Imaginos is not my favorite BOC album but the thing is even there worst album is better than 98% of any other bands I'm a professional musician and I've been a fan since i was 10 which was 1978 lol and they were my first concert in 1980. They are one of those few bands that every song on every album is good and think how many albums they have!!

    Steven Wilkinson

Very similar .. fan at 13 in 1978 & first concert in 1981 .. saw them in June 2017 for the 5th time here in the UK & they were STILL fantastic. Some people like us get how great they really are ... maybe 50 Great songs & only a few duff ones on all those albums .. wonderful musicians & songwriters & then there is Buck Dharma))

Thanks so much for lyrics! Ya know I wrote BOCback in 1972 and they sent me a teleprinter produced lyric set 2nd album and some from 1st .I had for years, wish I still had , BOC is ,has been and always will be my all time high pick.....period!

    John Houlgate

If you want the lyrics to all of Blue Oyster Cult's songs, go to blueoystercult.com, click on Studio, then albums & cds. Select the cover of the album that has the song, then in that album's page the songs are listed below. Click on the song title and you will see the lyrics. You did a creditable job of compiling the song's lyrics, but there are a few errors. For example:

"Perfect water - the dark wind braids the waves that grays birds.

'Ware the tree. Is this our destiny?
    "

    The correct lyrics are:
"Perfect water - the dark wind braids the waves
the crazed birds raid the trees.
    Is this our destiny?"

    Indigo Blue

John Houlgate Thanks for the correction, dude!

B.O.C is just an amazing band. That span 4 decades.

    Steven Wilkinson

Over 50 years since Buck played the first gig as Soft White Underbelly in October 1967 ... yes amazing.

  59. Richard Lamb

Want this played at my funeral.

    úlfhéðnar

same here. honestly if you think about it, the song is about dying.

  60. Thomas Finley

I think this may be the best rock guitar song ever made. Seriously, the uplifting chord patterns, amazing solos and licks everywhere...its incredible. The only outro solo that comes close to this feel for me is the live Comfortably Numb solo from the Division Bell era. Buck and Gilmour: pretty amazing company.

    RoeserFan1

It is a masterpiece, that is for sure.

  63. Oscar Sebastian Enroth

You guys are all right. This is such a perfect song - Ever since I first heard it just a few days ago it's been stuck in my head... I am afraid of over-playing it, but at the same time I really don't have much choice in the matter. It's so beautiful.. It's so cool. The vocals are amazing, and they evoke such emotion... The guitar-work is beyond this world; Or at least it's just my kind of guitar exactly.

And just to add to all the great comments already here...

Am I the only one getting chills from the hammer on pull-off combination on the high e string on 2:45 / 2:46 ?

This is one of the few songs where I can't decide which guitar solo-part I enjoy the most :) The one in the start... the one around the 2minutes 40sec or the last one. All so good.

    foleys17
