Blue Oyster Cult - Before The Kiss, A Redcap Lyrics
So grab your rose and ring side seat,
We're back home at Conry's bar
The blond girl with her tattoo,
Reds and wine, cokes of course
Why did we ever start
It's morning now, you'd never know
The gin, the gin, glows in the dark, glows in the dark
And underneath, the black light,
Underneath it all
Four and forty redheads meet,
Come to doom 'til the dawn
With threats of gas and rose motif
Their tongues extend, and then retract
A redcap, a redcap, before the kiss, before the kiss.
Doors like flint and window panes
An endless shadow bar
The owner's boys have gone to work
To stop big deals behind the bar
While outside on the turnpike
They got this new hit tune
Where thrills become as cheap as gas
And gas as cheap as thrills
One thrill and mundane here at last
Expect the cross one more
Lecherous invisible
Beware the limping cat
Whose black teeth grip between loose jaws
Still ripe and fully bloomed
A rose that's not from anywhere
That you would know or I would care
And the owners boys act most cheerfully
Back home at Conry's bar
When their patrons' thoughts at last
Grow too big for their skulls
And awful things are happening
We've let this drama fold
And now the time has come at last
To crush the motif of the rose.
So grab your rose and ring side seat
We're back home at Conry's bar
The blond girl with her tattoo
Reds and wine, cokes of course
Oh my suzy, my suzy
Why did we ever start
It's morning now, you'd never know
The gin, the gin, glows in the dark, glows in the dark

love the song, but wtf is a redcap?
Clever double meaning as there was a beer branded Red Cap and also referred to a common barbiturate sedative that came in a red capsule

Not a better concert 1972 to 1975. They were the rockingest band around and yes I saw the who in 71, zeppilen ,Sabbath et.all
Steve Mccart . I agree, saw them in 79. Best show I’ve ever seen. I’ve seen them more recently and they were great, but nothing compared to that original lineup.
@Andy Fisher absolutely. Saw them once in around 1973 with T-Rex and poor T-Rec could only get through 3 or 4 songs. They just didn't rock. Oh BA felt bad but, whoever booked that show is to blame
it's like being in a scumbag bar, & drunkenly watching all the shit thats going on. a long time favorite.

i have a computer printout of the lyrics up to agents of fortune on the green and white paper from main frames back in the early 80's. I always had an BOC belt buckle throughout HS. :)
One of the great, but somehow underrated BOC songs. Buck Dharma at his flawless best.

Anybody getting Doors vibes of this?
Is Red Cap still in business? In Canada maybe?
Doug Pratt, Atlanta, Georgia, USA
The brand is produced by Waterloo Brewing (formerly Brick Brewing) of Kitchener Ontario now. It doesn't seem to be one of their star performers and the taste faces tough competition from all the craft type beers. Still, fond memories...

First time I heard this song I was high on something (probably pot... haha should have been redcaps). We screamed and laughed our asses off when they broke into part two (...thrills become as cheap as gas... ) What a hoot!!

I've loved this band since the early 70's. Saw them in Chicago after the 1st album. The first 3 albums are an awesome trio...nothing better!

I loved this album from its release but most of friends were too in Sabbath and Zep to give it a listen...that changed when Tyranny and Mutation came out.
gas ain't so cheap now MF;s
Jammin this song back in high school (in 91 or so) and I referenced the line "the thrills become as cheap as gas and gas as cheap as thrills" to my dad... he proceeded to regale me with stories of how he and his buddies would pile in the vehicle back then and toss all the change from their pockets into the center console and that paid for gas for the entire trip... Good times my friends!
Greatness.
too bad red cap doesn't stubby these days.
I like more the Agents Of Fortune era and the Fire Of Unknown Origin era, but this is great.
This song is ridiculously good....wow❤️

The gin, the gin, glows in the dark, glows in the dark
One of my all-time favorite songs. I know from the lyrics book I bought from an "insider" fan club that the words are written, "The gin, the gin, glows in the dark." But, I have listened to this tune so many times, I have to say that what is written is not what I hear. I hear it as, "Vir-gin, vir-gin, rose in the dark." It may be a bit disgusting, but it makes more since to me and the "rose motif" and the singer asking Suzy, "why did we ever start?"
I could be hearing it because that's what I want to hear, but, to me, it makes more sense to the theme of the song.
So, there's that...
Would of never figured out those lyrics.dont want to .no!
@Jeff Furnald stuff going on there.
@Jeff Furnald I know, I thought that was what it was, but it's "the gin". See lyrics at http://www.blueoystercult.com/Studio-main.html
The lyrics as posted above have some inaccuracies according to what's at BÖC's site.
@Jeff Furnald Of course, your lyrics( the same I heard) make more sense. My first girlfriend was a Suzy. I was a virgin. It all adds up.
These guys can frickin play!
Black and Blue concert Indy,Early 70's Black Sabbath And Blue Oyster Cult
12 fucking cunts
gas as cheap as thrills ... very prophetic
underneath the black lights Remember the black lights and the posters?
Damn good song. BOC rocks.
they did make this gin that glowed in the dark but it was the bottle that glowed in the dark.
it probably refers to gin & tonic. Tonic water is fluorescent and glows blue in UV light, to such extent as to glow in sunlight.
Saw them numerous tours in the 70s. One of the best Live bands.
Very lucky to have seen them then. I was about 5. What was your best memory of the shows?
I loved the smoke and air raid sirens blasting through the auditorium during ME 262.
Joseph B i envy you my dude
My coolest BOC concert memory in Harrisburg, PA in the early 70s was seeing 4 pumped up guitarists all jammin' as far out front on the stage as possible, with the smoke and lights....it was great. I wanted to be one of them. I peeked in the mid-80s on air guitar.
A very underrated band. The first three albums were their finest, with those deadly riffs and cryptic lyrics. This track is a killer with the walking bass line.
Too classy by far, which is why they never really achieved mainstream success.
I saw them in 2008, and they were playing the epic "Godzilla", and then went into Queen's
"Another Bites The Dust" halfway through the song !
I thought it was very sad, as their own catalogue was strong enough not to delve into such a desperate tactic.
Well their fourth, Agents of Fortune, is also a GREAT album. And totally underrated, no doubt.
I still like fire of unknown origin though
@***** Spot on re the debut album
by BOC. It speaks volumes that I still have
the original vinyl releases, after nearly 40 years. "Transmaniacon MC" has to be one
of the opening tracks ever. Brilliant title as
well, so menacing !
I was also a big AC fan, especially the period from 1971 - 74. Didn't know that the Bouchards had linked up with Dennis. so thanks for the recommendation.
BOC likes to do covers.
'Amanita' is such a beautiful name. Amanita my chiquita, kiss me.

hahahahah man thanks I memorized this song back a long time ago made no sense till I grew up! Before the kiss!

Love their early albums. After the breakup the magic is gone but still a lot of good albums been put out.
Anyone else got to chapter 16 in Career of Evil yet? Lovely read :) Lovely music, too!

+elf man Hilarious, in hindsight.
+Bluecho4 Ha ha so right u are.
My favorite line from this song
Just love how they combine blues, jazz and rock in this gem.
So true. No one like them.
saw them in San Diego before 1st album came out the cost to donate a can of food great. I remember they sounded great and and heard afterwards that they couldn't use the food. And then the next day their first album came out Wharehouse records price $1.01
One of my top three debut albuns ever.
rvhawkeye a little jug band too....
There are some great debut albums in rock .. including Led Zep, Wishbone Ash, Iron Maiden etc but due to the incredible variety & audacity of BOC's 72 debut I personally rank it at the top with The Doors (67).
wow the whole band can play . Pretty good tooo!
+kenton jones Kenton's a savage
I used THIS track to personally turn several people on to (the amazing!) Blue Öyster Cult.
This and Redeemed-the two best side closers in history.

Enjoy my friends :)
+Ed Plesha ...actually its 'A rose and not from anywhere that you would know or I would care..'
I sent off for them too, after Secret Treaties came out. I got them, but they were a bit garbled and printed out on old dot matrix paper. I was gratified to have them - cleared up a lot of confusion on my part.
I sent for the lyrics and got them. They included the lyrics to their first three albums.
Would u go with me?May I cum withU?Go With u .Look $ food !Grill cheese yougurt .Any meat? USE SECRET WEAPON! Warm WASCHCLOTHE! Ea++++++++++Calm u Down! I am a toucher! Feel U Up all over Lots of Kisses I will Leave My #! Used Secret Weapon! Did it Work?
I remember an early interview with Bloom and Buck reminiscing on how they used to sit around and do AciD and watch Star Trek. I think this played a Major Part in influencing their abstract Lyrics--hahaha. The MC5 would sniff Glue backstage, and when they hit the Stage--LOOKOUT!!! ALL HELL BROKE LOOSE!!! AmWay, this was a GREAT UNIQUE AL/BLOOM. CREEM RAG IS RESPONSIBLE FOR ME BUYING AN OTHERWISE OBSURE BAND'S VINLY. CREEM WROTE A FAVORABLE REVIEW ON THESE GUYS. THE ALBUM STILL HOLDS WATER TILL THIS DAY!!! P.s. I could Polka to this easily--hahaha
Always loved this song. Obviously about Conry's Bar (a real place where BOC used to play...a tape of it exists). "4 and 40 redheads meet" is a reference to the barbiturate Seconal, whose imprint was Lily F40. Also, the song "The Red And The Black" (ramped up version of "I''m On The Lamb But I Ain't No Sheep" with different music) released on Tyranny and Mutation, has to be a reference in part to the old Biphetamine-T drug, way before my time, but apparently was red and black and contained a extended release resinate of levo and dextroamphetamine and methaqualone (Quaalude). Woo...actually after thinking it myself and researching, a quote from Martin Popoff's books states "Sandy has also said that red symbolizes quaaludes and black symbolizes methadrine." Bingo!
+Josh Robertson I think the redcap is seconal I used to love those.
Supposedly they dropped acid and watched Star Trek. Hell, I did a lot of acid and I don't think I could take Cpt. Kirk on acid...but them short skirts on the women back then.
Right on.
There were also f 80s . twice as strong. You would get 4 for $1.00. But that was a long time ago
band I was on played a couple tunes off the LP it was pure ecstasy playing this music! Yes those were the days when you had to know your craft and the lyrics were meaningful and you had to know how to play! What happened to the music? I'll tell you what happened! The studios gained artistic control and began producing the brainless noise for the clueless masses! Sound judgmental? Good!
Doc Vega . Sounds about right.
this was a fav to jam along with back when i was learning to play back in the 70's....God bless B D !
Back for More !!!!
This is a really great one the first three BOC albums are as I feel the prodigal totem of what would become Alternative rock! They can play hard but they're not Metal! (Which I feel greatly misrepresented them) They were too diverse to be called one thing They were a great mix of garage rock & jam band with a gothic boho edge & later a bit Avant Garde as well! Yes I miss the Bouchard Bros. as well They were more invested in the songwriting & singing than most people realize! But this is a great example of the once great LI 5! (Miss you alot Alan)
I appreciate this comment.
favoritr boc track! there are many, many more, but this one is my ringtone! the best!
for me one of the best BÖC-songs !!!
great taste!
Quick send off for the lyrics.
@montbob100 OMG! I did that in like 1980!!!
@***** It might be the redcap mushrooms mentioned in another comment, esp considering the "thrills as cheap as gas" line, but a redcap is also a blow to the head in a bar fight. If you listen to the rest of the song, esp after the tempo change, there's a throwdown between 2 groups, one of which is a group of vampires under the "motif of the rose", and I'm sure you've heard of "the vampire's kiss". That's how I took it: Before you kiss me, let me knock you cross-eyed.
@Ross T those second alls I definitely know about
@Ross T finally gave me the answer I was looking for. thank you very much! I definitely something know about barbiturates
Not a big deal here and there can be more than one meaning of course -- but the "seconals" story I read in the BOC book and came from the horse's mouth.
Regardless -- this stuff sounds as great today as it did then. The amazing and timeless Blue Oyster Cult.
REDS AND RIPPLE======CRIPPLED!!!
@scrappy drake Buck was ALWAYS the romantic in the group. In a good way.
@***** back when gas was .30 cents a gallon and muscle cars were popular, a blood red capsule known as seconal [a barbituate] was cheaper than a gallon of gas. It was very popular and a lot of kids ODed on them [some were 40mil, 'double dose' strength]. Drinking on them was a dangerous proposition as well. Another unlikely culprit may have been amanita muscaria mushrooms [fly agaric] that have bright red caps and are hallucinogenic. They were not well known back then, so I'd go with the seconal theory.
That was exactly what I and all my friends believed when in 1973. when I was 16. We just called them "reds". They were very common at the time.
reds, blues, tree's! miss em all! not to forget qaaludes! rock on!
I always thought it was about acid.. we weren’t into pills , so that’s where my mind went.
I guess thrills are expensive nowadays.
What an awesome song. It cooks from start to finish
It's actually Conry's Bar, not Conner's.
great song, great album.
Dharma what ever his real name is happens to be one of the greatest rock guitarist ever if your a B.O.C fan you have heard his chops copied though the years a shame it will never be recognized
A redcap is a quadlude ot other type of drug in a red capsule, hence a redcap, a kiss is how lovers at nightclubs or out at night passed the pill. BOC while performing at Conner's Bar in NY saw this happen. That is how the song and story behind it came about.
"Roeser's not from anywhere that you would know or I would care."
That was around the time of the first gas crisis, when gas was threatening to go over 50 cents a gallon!
awesome.......... those were the days! +R+
I was 16, played a few Jimi & Zep riffs on my guitar, and I knew everything there was to know about music. So I thought. The kid down the street had records too, but what would a 14 year-old know about rock? Then he insisted that I try this album – omygawd! Because of him, my first band a few years later played BOC’s Stairway to the Stars, and ME262.
fuckin epic!
I have this album on vinyl somewhere...
Why do BÖC songs remind me of Video Games? Cities on Flame reminds me of Mario Kart and this song reminds me of The Sims.
maybe because the video for Take Me Away starts with someone playing video games at an arcade?
Sprattelnalle This song reminds me of Ed Edd n Eddy at 1:48
