i listened to this song when i was first time suicidal years ago. I was 17 and thought that the better days when i felt alive were in the past. But they just came letter. Whoever feels this: It will get better. I promise. It may take time, but it does get better.

Lost my best friend to suicide almost 8 weeks ago.

A few years ago I had gotten myself to a point where I decided to finally do it, as opposed to merely thinking about it all the time. I waited until it was dark, so the little girls next door wouldn't see, tied a perfect noose, threw it over the only branch I could reach in the big Live Oak next to my place, put it around my neck, and let myself slide off of the lawn chair I was standing on. I felt completely at peace. I wasn't kicking like you see in movies. Just serenely hanging there waiting for the end. I remember thinking about my sisters right before I blacked out. The next thing I saw were 2 police officers standing over me, one doing that knuckle thing on my sternum. They rolled up and cut me down. I was maybe 15 seconds at most from succeeding. The only reason they were even there was because my sister, who I hadnt talked to in a year, called the local PD in my town in Texas, and asked them to check on me. She made that call from her home back in Ohio. Later that evening I got a very rare opportunity to witness what the effect would have been on my other sister. She was at work and she misunderstood why she was being called to the phone. She thought they said that her brother had committed suicide, when they actually said I had been unsuccessful. I will never forget the sound that she made just before I heard her collapse to the floor.


Life is rough and full of pain. There isnt any gentle way to say that. But it does get better. Hang on. Reach out. Talk to someone. Anyone. Message me for fuck's sake. I'll sit up with you for 2 days if I have to.
I am addiction counselor now, and I like to think that I'm good at my job. Don't leave them with that impossible weight to forever drag around behind them. I'm here. I love you. I will help you.

Memories for my teenage years in the 90s and for some of my friends who died by suicide in the 2000s. They were the best, organizing parties at their house during the week-end when their parents were gone.

No worries I just drank too much last night. Drinking brings out the worst in me. Was my first time drinking in 2 months. I'm only suicidal when I get drunk, unfortunately it's every single time. I actually put a blade to my wrist and everything.

I'm 42. A podcast host. A father of three. I just used this song to talk to my son about mental health and suicide. He has a friend whose parents are getting a divorce, and he (my son) assured me he (the friend) "was happy and laughing all the time".

It made an impact. Tears were had. I watched my son understand, if just a little bit, how sad this world can be sometimes...but, that we can do something by simply being there.

I've listened to this song for more than 20 years, and I have never...never made it through without crying. Tonight, four eyes shared the tears.
