Blind Melon - Dear 'Ol Dad Lyrics
Come now and listen babe
I gotta reason why I behave
Like a child with a light in eyes
Running naked on a cold winter night
I am like a pigeon that is spreading
Like a hammer that has made
a dent in every little single cent you've spent
Said oh God you've got to help me a little bit
you've got to have a relief file for me
Now I know I'm always right, that's a
thought that never even crossed my mind
Don't touch me there, I've gotta be pure
So smack that hand, and read this verse
My new found faith will pay by check
This life's took a toll on my soul
So this is me and that's my song
And I guess that you can see that we don't get along
I've shut the doors on what we had
so now she can sleep with her Dear ol' Dad
my eyes are dry and my hands are clean
and I can't believe all the things I've seen
[Chorus]
Oh My God!

Blind Melon Dear 'Ol Dad Comments
BM should merge with or tour with the Black Crowes. This could totally be a Crowes album and I think Chris Robinson knows it since the first listen. That would be way cool.
Those fuckin guitars though🎸 I love Blind Melon. RIP Shannon.
You are so missed, Shannon.
You’re a filmmaker now, I hope the world sees your story and finds all your music. You always deserved so much better. Rest In Peace ♥️
I met Shannon Hoon in Columbus Ohio. Shannon was very nice before and after the show. I miss him he was unique.
Shannon eternooooo 🎤🎶🤟🤟♥️♥️♥️

God, I miss the days when dudes with long hair weren't pussified soy boys.
oh, this life took a toll on my soul....
*BM Baby*
Exelent!!
One Punch Hoon they called him, back in Indiana. If I'm not mistaken the last show they played before he passed on was here in SLC, UT. Same with Elliot Smith.
I like how a lot of Blind Melon songs have some Pearl Jam vibe to it 😜🤘🏼
I'm liking this comment cause its 45 minutes ago. I stay jamming to 90s
Seen this song first time at MTV's Headbangers Ball with vanessa Warwick (wife of the singer from the band The Almighty, great band) Still listening to it in 2019 \m/ great song
This lifes taken a toll on my soul
any ideas what this song is about
Rip shannon hoon...
That's the one good thing about being old. You bought classic albums when they were released.
better than anything pearl jam ever wrote and I respect the shit out of pearl jam. the difference is that blind melon was ahead of their time. their music is still relative.
Ever think to think maybe these great artists didnt die of self devouring tendancies but were shake downs and acts of stage set murder suicides.? Just a thought for the coincidental amounts of birds that all drop at once from one stone un noticed in the headlines they write and historically show
Things get insanely beautiful here 0:53

Its sad but drugs create the best type of music
2018 y aún suenas en mi cabeza. 💙
sounds verry funky grooves
Wore the first cassette copy of this album out, had to buy another. Every track immense.
This is the good shit, great musicians, singer and songwriter. It just all came together at a great time, happy days, simple days with an awesome soundtrack.
Was this video shot in Seattle? Kind of looks like it.
Hello BlindMelonVEVO friends. Please unblock NO RAIN for my country Colombia. Thank you very much.
That’s what we call urgency..
I'm getting more into Blind Melon. I always liked them, but the focus at the time was more on the Seattle scene, and I ended up just listening to their radio hits at the time. This was what was left of the LA via Indiana, guns n Roses scene. Guns n Roses always was my favorite, and Blind Melon is better than any of the Seattle bands. The music is just more complex and Shannon's a more creative singer with a better range. It's sad he went the way he did. At the time there seemed to be such a groundswell of talent and creativity, in rock in general. But so many of these talents have died now. And when people die, they take that with them, and it's made for a world that's far less beautiful than when they were in it, and for less talented voices to be featured, who really have nothing to say.
Deep slashes along my soul.....
BIG NUT
this song is my Tinder profile anthem.
Amazing band. I saw them in Helsinki in -95. Fuckin' great!
I laugh when people try to tell me blind melon only had one hit single "no rain" and nothing else was that good.... Yeah right
The first album is possibly my favourite album of all time but this song ........
@Adam Sharaby Soundgarden is Hands down my favorite. I love AiC, STP, Pearl Jam and Nirvana. But Blind Melon is my 2nd favorite band to jam to. I actually discover them super late. Last year was when I did. I've showed my GF and she likes them. I grew up different then her, course. Anyway, So I like this music a lot more. I'm actually a music head. She could care less about music. She likes it but she could care less. I grew up listening to music. (Don't mean to sound like I'm rambling on I just wanna share this) I was born April 3rd 96. A year before this dude passed. Dont mean to sound like I'm saying in born in the wrong era or whatever. I dont feel like that. I'm a 90s baby and I'm jamming to Willie Nelson to Blind Melon. Love it. Have a great day dude.
Let the naive pricks be naive, very special sounds to me, can only imagine what Shannon would do if he was here today, hopefully have a beer because that's what I am doing lol
@NothingBut70s80s90s - sound garden black hole sun pearl jam evenflow were my favorites but when i listened to blind melon change i had and still have a whole new outlook on life
Btdont find ,,no rain" good song at all.
❤️👌👀
Good graduation music😜
I love blind melon wooooooooooooo
Wtf--- where was this hiding the whole time???

John smith hell yea --- I can't get enough of blind melon--- especially Shannon he takes me to a place in my mind that's the closest thing to what ever1 would consider your "happy place"
me too man, soup is one of my favorite albums of all time
Eternal_[ Sloth yep. agree. :)
I liked the way SHANNON took over Woodstock 94! JAH BLESS 😇
He was fresh out of a rehab and on a brave dose of L
this is one of my favorite blind melon songs. I loved all their music. they were so underrated.
This was the first song I heard from them. Saw the video on Headbangers Ball. Soon after they would be the first band I ever saw live. 3 days later their album came out and it would be literally the only tape I would listen to for a long long time.
Such an awesome band, Soup is my top 3 albums of all time. A shame what happen as they were only getting better
Saw them many years ago in King Tuts, Glasgow, Scotland, shook hands with Shannon while he was onstage. :D
great song
Saw Blind Melon in 1993 was epic! ❤
lucky i was bron in the worng time
I saw them in '92 opening for Ozzy and Alice in Chains. 3 days before their album came out.
I love you.
Milton Keynes may 93 supported GnR great day
I seen Melon open for Lenny Kravitz back in the day......
Been a fan since 97. Easily the best band since then, but I'm obviously biased lol
I have never seen anything so underrated in my ENTIRE life
Blind melon are definitely underrated everytime I try and tell people about them they always go oh you mean the no rain guys and immediately dismiss them that song was a curse literally everything else they did was way better even back in the 90s people did that such a shame they were one of the best groups to come out of that era
I agree Fucking A1!
@greg.i change is and always will be my favorite song god rest Shannon hoon
@Richard Osapalski I really like sleepyhouse and the Duke
@Richard Osapalski ..change was the first song I have ever heard by them..that was back when that album was new,and before no rain hit the radio good...I had to learn that song on guitar when I heard it,awesome song!✌✌
He was so raw. His movement while he performs is hypnotizing to watch.. Sigh.. :(
what a fresh super powered song -
"Dear 'Ol Dad"
Come now and listen babe
I gotta reason why I behave
Like a child with a light in eyes
Running naked on a cold winter night
I am like a pigeon that is spreading
it's wings to fly away to better things
Like a hammer that has made
a dent in every little single cent you've spent
Said oh God you've got to help me a little bit
you've got to have a relief file for me
Now I know I'm always right, that's a
thought that never even crossed my mind
Don't touch me there, I've gotta be pure
So smack that hand, and read this verse
So I wrecked your life, what the heck
My new found faith will pay by check
This life's took a toll on my soul
So this is me and that's my song
And I guess that you can see that we don't get along
I've shut the doors on what we had
so now she can sleep with her Dear ol' Dad
my eyes are dry and my hands are clean
and I can't believe all the things I've seen
Oh My God
nice to listen to an old spng that i liked before !
I hold a bit of fanboy pride that I bought this album in response to seeing/hearing this (their first single) on MTV's 120 Minutes- Many months before the bandwagon was ridden
+Nonsuch The album wasn't released till after that tour. They were only half way through recording it in Seattle. Did they have the demo/promo copies? I'm not doubting you, just very curious.
+Desiree Gonzalez according to a site: http://120minutes.tylerc.com, this video played on 120 Minutes on April 5, 1992 and I still remembered it the next fall when the album was released (I was a HS Student- taped the show overnight and watched fave bits for months after). Tones of Home had also played by then but I still had a soft spot for this song. The "bandwagon" I speak of was when "No Rain" blew up so big the next summer.
+Nonsuch Ned My bad, glad I asked. I thought you meant the 120 minutes MTV tour they did. So awesome!! :-)
+Nonsuch Ned Thanks for the link. I have all that stuff on VHS as well, I really need to transfer it. I have a couple Denver shows they did. I was in high school too. Rare to find people from way back then! What cracks me up about No Rain is the bass player wrote that before he was even in the band. I'm sure you know, but that's why that song is so different. He also did most of Tones of Home.
I hold the same kind of pride, but in reverse. I bought my first Blind Melon album in 2010. Most people had forgotten that Blind Melon even existed. That's when I became a fan of this great band.

This is what it is all about, a raw emotional stage of music, music that one can be proud and appreciate.
+James Chatting i love you james <3
It's sad, I'm a sophomore and a total melon head and the only one who knows who blind melon is.
Cameron Rose fucking share this wonderful music with your friends. Share it with strangers. Just share it.
lol. Im with you Cameron rose. I'm the only one who seems to know about blind melon out everyone i know too. :)
Gosh this band is so good.
Its too bad people dont realize how good they really were.
The first thing I noticed when I picked up this album was the interplay of the guitars and along the way fell in love with Shan
ons singing and lyrics,
they are awesome
Mi cancion favorita de melon ciego
rofl I was listeningto this in my library at college with head fones and the dog bark at the end made me look around for a dog rofl. then I realized oh ya I forgot about the dog at the end lol XD
This life's took a toll on my soul!!! Oooooooouuuu Yeahhhh!!! This life's took a toll on my soul!!!
Who cares what drugs they were on. It's the past, just listen to the music goddammit.
For all fucks sake..YESSSS!!! Blind Melon and old alice in chains r my two of my alltime favorites! And like Layne once said, "my bad habits arent my title. My strengths and my TALENTS are my title!" So, for the naysayers, SHUT THE FUCK UP AND ENJOY!!!!!!
Actually Shannon was a major heroin addict, not coke.... but one of the most brilliant musicians of the '90s
BUT he did do coke.
bless you for knowing that
Well, it WAS coke that he overdosed on...
Um..lol actually he had more of a problem with coke. He overdosed on coke. However, Who the fuck cares?!? We r here to listen to what he left for us. This awesome music
Damn I really love this band!
Me too man. I listen to them everyday
Bunch of coke junkies. But good tunes
Ignorance is bliss
You know nothing about Shannon and blind melon. Not even in the same direction.
Such an amazing band
mítico blind melon
"He should have never been on drugs." True but the real sad reality is their music would not have been this beautiful without it.
I think somebody in Pearl Jam said that trying to play concerts stoned was a bad idea for everybody except it seemed to work for Blind Melon
I agree some of Shannon's best performances were when he was obviously VERY high, but Pearl Jam's probably my favorite band ever, and I agree most bands probably shouldn't perform high, at least not on the hard shit... but there's always exceptions.
Ya, it worked out so well for Shannon Hoon
@John Peters Ya, that performance in Vancouver where he pissed all over the audience and got arrested was so cool
@Drew Flanagan pretty sure it wasnt the weed causing that lol
Missing Shannon much...SIGH!!!!
Shouldn't never? That's a double negative so lets translate it to proper English: Should always? Well, he did on occasion, not always. But he also wrote some amazing songs.
Agreed.
Such a forgotten, underrated band. I really love these guys.
He never would of wrote so many good songs probably .......:) look at the good not the bad!!!!!!!!!!!!!
He shouldn't never been on drugs =(.
shannon never should have cut his beautiful hair. he was gorgeous.
