This part of verse 1 might be talking about how the ones left behind are regretting how they followed the false religion and they are seeking for an answer, in this situation they either fight or die (hollow in this context is synonymous to dead)

In this verse 2, in a poetic way walking lifeless means you are without a life in a Christian Perspective walking lifeless means you are walking without Christ.
The dead here are the people who chose not to believe in Christ. These will be the people who are certainly damned. Black souls here means (unclean souls, tainted) empty bodies here means (in a Christian perspective empty bodies are considered a temple without the Holy Spirit)
