Blackmore's Night - Hark The Herald Angels Sing / Come All Ye Faithful Lyrics

Hark the herald angels sing
"Glory to the newborn King!
Peace on earth and mercy mild
God and sinners reconciled"
Joyful, all ye nations rise
Join the triumph of the skies
With the angelic host proclaim:
"Christ has come to Bethlehem"
Hark! The herald angels sing
"Glory to the newborn King!"

Christ by highest heaven adored
Christ the everlasting Lord!
Light and life to all He brings
He with healing in His wings
Mild He lays His glory by
Born that man no more may die
Bringing hope through all the land
His to every child and man
Hark! The herald angels sing
"Glory to the newborn King!"

O Come All Ye Faithful
Joyful and triumphant,
O come ye, O come ye to Bethlehem.
Come and behold Him,
Born the King of Angels;
O come, let us adore Him,
O come, let us adore Him,
O come, let us adore Him,
He is the Lord.

Sing, choirs of angels,
Sing in exultation,
Sing all his settleses of heaven above.
Glory to your heart glory in the Highest;
O come, let us adore Him,
O come, let us adore Him,
O come, let us adore Him,
He is the Lord.

Y'all do know that Christ goes by many names and definitions. When they sing "HE is the LORD" they're talking about Christ aka Jesus aka the King aka Yahweh and many others... Also, Peace can be used as a name for Him too..🤷 why cry over one name change when HIS name comes is all forms! 💖

Not to add fuel to anyone's self-righteous fire, but for the edification for those who practice Sunday School theology (SST) without the benefit of logic, reason, or research, here is Charles Wesley's original text. As an Anglican priest, he would, of course, have used christocentric verbiage. If you are so offended by the change in lyric, A. You're missing the overall message of the hymn; B. Don't listen to it; C. SST is a disservice to the Wesley brothers who valued the tradition, reason, and experience of the one who was interpreting the scripture.

Vol. 1 (London: Wesleyan-Methodist Conference Office, 1868), pp. 183-184. Their notes state that the verses they reproduced were identical to the 1739 edition, and "Reprinted from the originals with the last corrections of the authors."

Welcome back to December everyone :D

  11. T.... ....

Oh, the comments . . . I swear, conspiracy theorists must literally do nothing all day but Google things to nitpick and blow out of proportion.

As someone who celebrates both Christmas and Yule (winter solstice), the altered lyrics don't seem like that big of a deal and actually make sense, if you think about it. Anyone who researches Christmas will see it's basically traditions from various pagan winter solstice celebrations that were mashed together and repackaged as a Christian holiday. Jesus wasn't literally born on December 25th (his birthday was most likely sometime in spring, according to historians). However, many gods from different cultures are said to be born or reborn around the winter solstice. Their names, origins, and the customs of the people who worship them may be unique, but the themes all come back to the same thing: The idea that life, love, and light will continue, a joyous celebration in the midst of the year's drabbest, coldest season. Pagan and Christian alike recognize this.

Therefore, given that Blackmore's Night has an audience with various spiritual beliefs, it would make sense that they would want to do a rendition of this song that could, hopefully, appeal to everyone. When I hear this, I think of both Jesus' birth and the rebirth of the Divine Masculine who will once again begin another turning of the Wheel of the Year with the Goddess.
And to Christians still complaining that they eliminated "Christ" from the lyrics, they kept everything else--the references to Bethlehem, angels, that "the Lord" saved the world, "glory to God in the highest", etc. So chill. Or go listen to a version of this song that DOES specifically mention Christ, if you prefer. :)

Have a wonderful winter season and/or solstice/Yule/Christmas, everyone!
    Blessed be! + )O(

  12. F.... ....

For the people getting a bit O.o at the changed lyrics, you need to read the original ones for OCAYF. Google "adeste fidelis", which says "dominem", which means "lord" not "christ the lord".

And then research how OCAYF is written as both a Christian Hymn AND as a praise for Charles Stuart (with "king of angels" being sung with a hard rather than a soft "g").

It has always had a double meaning, and Adeste Fidelis are the real lyrics.

  14. P.... ....

I've been reading the comments and just . . . *facepalms* who . . . bloody . . . cares . . . this is a sweet carol sang by my most beloved singer, I don't care about the word choice, the message remains, rejoice because the world has been saved. And the ratio remains 305 like to 8 dislikes, so I don't know who haters think they're fooling, have a Merry Christmas and please turn off the lights on your way out.And on another note, thanks for uploading this. ^^ I listen to this every year, there's nothing like it.

  15. R.... W....

It's a shame that they had to mock God by removing Him from these carols.

    R.... W....

They say 'glory to God'; doesn't sound removed to me.

  16. S.... A....

WTF? We have to butcher the lyrics because it might offend someone none Christian? You took original Christmas songs and made them less beautiful. Rot in hell non believers go back to Deep Purple and Candice who?

    S.... A....

+Steve Christ "Rot in hell non believers" My, how UN- Christian of you. I'd suggest you might want to do some self-examination, lest you end up the one to "rot in hell".

Typical Christian response. No wonder atheism is growing so rapidly.

  18. I.... B....

this sounded so good I wanted to go and buy it, but then listened to this track and they have altered the line "Christ is born in Bethlehem" to "peace has come to Bethlehem" .Why are they ashamed of Christ, for whom the whole celebration of Christmas is a tribute??

  19. N.... ....

What is the correct text? "Paece has come to Bethlehem" or "Christ is born in Bethlehem"?

    N.... ....

+Nikioko I have heard it 'Christ is born in Bethlehem' for a half century, but I think they repurposed it to try to encourse peace in the Middle East.

    N.... ....

+Nikioko "Christ is born in Bethlehem" is the original. They changed it likely because Candice Night is Jewish. There are a few place where they changed the lyrics because of that.

    N.... ....

+Allen K On the other hand, they change "in heaven bells are ringing" in "christmas bells are ringing" and don't seem to have a problem with the word christmas.
And "glory to the newborn king" is a direct reference to Jesus, as well as they don't have problems with the Lord and God.

Thy Richie must be saved, thanks to Candice..and prayers. Mine one dark night. The Lord was there. Love you Richie and your sweet Guitar! Peace.

  21. C.... S....

This is horrible. There is so much music from the period (renaissance/medieval) that BN  supposedly draws its inspiration from...at least they dress like it...And that guitar solo. Yikes. That solo pretty much summed up all that was nasty about eighties solo guitar. And I consider this a nice review.

  22. t.... t....

They sing about ships going to Bethlehem.  They sing about 3 kings.  A child king.  They sing he is the Lord.  Clearly, they omitted the name Christ so as to throw conspiracy theorists off their trail.  After all, genuine satanic rock and rollers would clearly sing Christ's name in order to blend in, thus, in order to not blend in with the satanic singers, the best thing to do is give fundamentalists reason to pay attention and ask, why they aren't singing Christs name, thus, with some deep thought, the only conclusion can be...they are in fact knights Templar, guarding the true secrets of the Christ, the Cross and how his life was lived, a truly secret band of travelling minstrels who fought brave, pitched battles by swinging mandolins and lutes.  Then again, they could have been bearers of the maltese cross or teutonic knights.

    t.... t....

Mike Olson This kind of impeccable logic is the type of shit that I wake for in the morning to restore my faith in humanity with.

  23. j.... ....

Christ? I thought they were singing about Cernunnos.

    j.... ....

    In fact, they are.

    j.... ....

It could be both, since they kept some of the more overtly Christian references in the lyrics (mentioning Bethlehem, angels, that the born god saves humanity, etc), and why not? Yule and Christmas are about the same things at their roots, that love, light, and kindness prevail. And besides, for all we know, every December, all the gods who are said to be born around the winter solstice get together somewhere in the ether for a giant birthday party. :)

  24. J.... J....

I think, the reason they wouldnt use christ in the songs, is because they are pagan...i could be wrong, but that is my assumption.

    J.... J....

Who do you think they talk about when they say "the new born king" or "the everlasting lord", King Arthur?

    J.... J....

If they wanted to make a "pagan" album (although most Xmas symbolism and christian mythology is indeed ripped off from paganism) then they should have made a pagan winter music album. This is hideous. Its like as if the Sex Pistols put out a Beyonce album. Ugh.

    J.... J....

+John Jarema In Dingo Dong Merrily on High, they sing "Christmas bells are ringing" instead of "In heaven the bells are ringing". And the rest of the text also is quite different from the original, so much for this theory.
