Blackmore's Night - Good King Wenceslas Lyrics

Good King Wenceslas looked out
On the feast of Stephen
When the snow lay round about
Deep and crisp and even
Brightly shone the moon that night
Though the frost was cruel
When a poor man came in sight
Gath'ring winter fuel

"Hither, page, and stand by me
If thou know'st it, telling
Yonder peasant, who is he?
Where and what his dwelling?"
"Sire, he lives a good league hence
Underneath the mountain
Right against the forest fence
By Saint Agnes' fountain."

"Bring me bread and bring me wine
Bring me pine logs hither
Thou and I will see him dine
When we bear him thither."
Page and monarch forth they went
Forth they went together
Through the rude wind's wild lament
And the bitter weather

In his master's steps he trod
Where the snow lay dinted
Heat was in the very sod
Which the Saint had printed
Therefore, every men, be sure
Wealth or rank possessing
Ye who now will bless the poor
Shall yourselves find blessing

Good King Wenceslas looked out
On the feast of Stephen
When the snow lay round about
Deep and crisp and even
Brightly shone the moon that night
Though the frost was cruel
When a poor man came in sight
Gath'ring winter fuel

It's Christmas carol's, not winter's! Stop to be so irrational offensive to the christians, but also to the simple logic just because for reasons of psychopathologic political correctness.

  3. N.... R....

A late Merry Christmas from your friends in Israel! ❤

Thanks a lot, N.R from Czechia

  4. '.... ....

They skipped the 4th verse. They tend to skip verses on their covers. I'd love to know why.

  15. a.... a....

conservatives hate this song becsause its about helping poor people

    a.... a....

Robert Deffenbaugh keep telling yourself that🖒 history and basic observation prove otherwise

    a.... a....

dennis reynolds What an idiotic thing to say.

    a.... a....

Baloney. This conservative has had this song go through his head every day for the last sixty years.

    a.... a....

ash anarchy - Conservatives love this song because it is about helping others OUT OF YOUR OWN INITIATIVE, OUT OF THE KINDNESS OF YOUR HEART, and not because it is mandated by a faceless bureaucracy, Conservatives believe in the glory of the human spirit; 'liberals' in mundane rules. Conservatives believe in freedom, 'liberals' believe in legally compelled action. "Liberals" is an oxymoron because they are anything but liberal; Conservatives are the real liberals, as in liberty, as in free to choose. Conservatives respect and celebrate differences and the liberty to express differences; liberals think we should all be reduced to bovine stupor, easy to herd and channel.

  16. J.... D....

Chicks don't sing this well. 😑

  17. j.... ....

"Christian" men-So sick of all this P/C afraid to offend to dare say Christian. I was going to play this for my grandsons but will play another version with the "Christian" men verse.

    j.... ....

Maranatha. Look UP, for your redemption draweth nigh.

    j.... ....

jack1234 I have just commented on that in reply to another comment on here. I am sick of all the PC stuff also. I wish people would realise the true meaning of Christmas and that He is the reason for the season!

    j.... ....

But they aren't shy about using music to attack us.
It's also funny how they say we Christian stole Christmas from "*whoever*" but they actually steal Christian Christmas songs.

    j.... ....

Agreed. Also replacing the word "flesh" with "bread". Why are you pandering to bloody vegeterians?

    j.... ....

cityraildude - That's funny, putting "bloody" and "vegetarian" together.

  18. J.... B....

BLOWS MY MIND "STELLAR" absolute FAVOURITE Christmas song.
Childhood friends last name are the "Blackmore's" wonderment~

  19. r.... P....

Today is actually the famous "Feast of Stephen" on which the equally famous Good King Wenceslas "looked out..." Though, thanks to El Nino, the frost is not particularly "cruel" in most of the country (USA) this Christmas, there is a full moon (Won't be another one on Christmas until 2034.) Here's the lyrics and a link to the famous carol:

    Good King Wenceslas looked out
    On the feast of Stephen
When the snow lay round about
    Deep and crisp and even.
Brightly shone the moon that night
    Though the frost was cruel
When a poor man came in sight
    Gath'ring winter fuel.

"Hither, page, and stand by me
    If thou know'st it, telling
    Yonder peasant, who is he?
    Where and what his dwelling?"
"Sire, he lives a good league hence
    Underneath the mountain
    Right against the forest fence
    By Saint Agnes' fountain."

"Bring me flesh and bring me wine
    Bring me pine logs hither
Thou and I will see him dine
    When we bear him thither."
Page and monarch forth they went,
    Forth they went together
Through the rude wind's wild lament
    And the bitter weather.

"Sire, the night is darker now
    And the wind blows stronger
Fails my heart, I know not how,
    I can go no longer!"
"Mark my footsteps, my good page
    Tread thou in them boldly!
Thou shalt find the winter's rage
    Freeze thy blood less coldly."

In his master's steps he trod
    Where the snow lay dinted.
Heat was in the very sod
    Which the Saint had printed.
    Therefore, Christian men be sure,
    Wealth or rank possessing,
Ye who now will bless the poor
    Shall yourselves find blessing!

    J.... K....

Jay Krasne It's a pity that Candice skipped the fourth verse and left out the word Christian in the last verse.

  22. T.... B....

5 years since I first heard this, it's still my favourite rendition.

    T.... B....

    Toby Bolton nazi? Relly bruh

    T.... B....

    Nazis have feelings too.

  23. S.... c....

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wenceslaus_I,_Duke_of_Bohemia ...if someone cares :)

    S.... c....

+Suchac cz Funny thing is that he wasn't even king, trough later there were some kings in Bohemia named Wenceslaus, but it was Wenceslaus who had been later proclaimed saint, so as the song is probably about him.

    S.... c....

Interesting. I see that he was a noble who was assassinated, had a cult, and was posthumously declared a king by a Pope. As revelations go, it reminds me of the likelihood that the 3 wise men were Buddhist monks.

  24. H.... T....

    Výborné, moc krásné!!!

  25. p.... ....

beautiful  rendition of a timeless classic !!   this is  a notoriously  difficult carol  and one in which most people  fumble on the lyrics!!

  26. T.... ....

A very good version of this Christmas song.  Like a lot of Blackmore's Night stuff.

    T.... ....

    Oh yes!

  27. S.... ....

" . . . Therefore CHRISTIAN men be sure, wealth or rank possessing  . . ." Stop taking the christian message out of christian songs.

    S.... ....

As with many things Christian, the Imperial hypocrisy and betrayal of Jesus's message of God's love makes the word "Christian" often anathema to its true meaning. Besides which, the artist didn't present this as a traditional version. Go find a traditional version, or make your own World Music version.

    S.... ....

See my comment about Christian hypocrisy and betrayal through Imperial doctrine and historical and current abuse and intrigue.

    S.... ....

Why do you whine go find your own holidays and stop the stealing of pagan traditions if you want to get technical about the winter holidays but like all closed minded fools you will argue no matter when true facts are presented

    S.... ....

No, this is a video of a Winter Carol version. As the album explicitly says. If you don't like this version, don't listen to it. Not everything *has* to pander to Christianity and bend to its will. Just sayin'.

    S.... ....

    SuperEpiphyte Hear hear!!

  28. T.... H....

    Beautiful

  29. s.... ....

Why the volume is so increased after 2 minutes? the song is well sung but the volume is unbearable!

    s.... ....

    Crank it up to 11

  30. s.... ....

This is excellent.  Thanks for posting it.

  31. C.... H....

So amazing! Love this song so much! Thank you for posting! Jesus loves you more than you can ever even possibly begin to imagine! Such an interesting story behind the song too. God bless you!

  32. R.... P....

COOL ACTIVITY: Sing this song, but replace every word in it with the word "NAIRU". Keep doing this for the rest of your life over and over. Whisper "nairu..." faintly with your last breath on your dying bed.

  33. w.... ....

    my thanx

  34. S.... D....

I don't know how more people haven't found this 0.0

  35. J.... P....

The best version of this song.

    J.... P....

Pretty soon you will like deep purple.

    J.... P....

This version and Loreena McKennitt's are the two best that I've heard.. :)

    J.... P....

+J Battles Loreena's is better, both musically and because she doesn't "PC" the lyrics.

    J.... P....

+FurryAnimal: I disagree. I find this rendition better captures my imagination. And as much as I love the lyrics and singing, I really *love* the melody that accompanies it!

    J.... P....

I like Steve McDonald's, but it doesn't include the last verse...

  36. D.... ....

Please, can someone tell me what that instrument from 02:03 on is called? It sounds magical!

    D.... ....

Bombard. Double reed, similar to an oboe.

    D.... ....

Thank you so much! I'm off searching right now!
