Biz Markie - Alone Again Lyrics

I was on my way, to 125th
I saw this def Benz, yo that's my man Cliff
As I flagged them down, he pulled to the side
At this moment I had to swallow my pride
Cause usually I wouldn't ask for a lift
But it was cold as hell, and my legs was stiff
He said, "Hey Biz, what you want, a ride?"
I said, "Hell yeah," he said, "I can't cause my girl's inside"
So he jetted off, leavin two tracks
Not at one time did homeboy look back
It took me an hour, to get where I was goin
and to top it all off, it had to start snowin
My sneakers was old, and my coat was thin
But my determination kept me goin within
I had nobody to help me as you can SEE..

I'm alone again, naturally
Alone again, naturally

So I went into the show, and started maxin
People came up to me, and started askin
whassup wit me, and when I'm gettin on
and how many records is Shante gonna perform
I don't know, but now I gotta go
cause Shante is callin me to do the show
First she was on, and then she called me out
I did a lot of funky beats without no doubt
I put the mic on my head, and began to riff
The crowd began to flip, cause I was rockin the shift
When we was done, I started to laugh
Massive people come to me for my autograph
After the funk was over it was time to break
If I was rhymin it would be the icin on the cake
As I saw Shante, get into a limo
I had to walk home, I wrote it in my memo

I'm alone again, naturally
All alone again, naturally

Now I'm a-ight, nothin to worry
Wherever I wanna go, I get there in a hurry
That's right I'm big time, very well known
Now I'm sayin rhymes instead of beats on the microphone
Right about now, I'm gonna explain
It was Cool V, TJ Swan and the Big Daddy Kane
Doin shows all together, as one group
None of us actin big headed, or souped
Then after that, we all formed a block
I paid everybody, told them how they rocked
They all grabbed they props, and when they seperate
Swan said, "I'll see you later Biz, in a couple of days"
When people see me leave, like a mamma-jamma
It's like if I was swoll with stars lights and glamour
But when Vaughn came home, he thought I was in somewhere
with a girl was in bed.. nah..

Alone again, naturally
I'm alone again, naturally

Ahh ahh...

Biz Markie Alone Again Comments
  1. S.... ....

O'Sullivan reminds me of that creepy professor at a university who is outed as a child molester after his tenure.

  2. O.... N....

"He said hey Biz, what you want a ride? I said, hell yeah, he said I can't cause my girl inside"

  3. M.... F....

    Cool song.

  4. m.... j....

Definitely sounds like Gilbert O'Sullivan 1972 song Alone again Naturally no doubt about it. I got the 45rpm from 1972.

  5. p.... ....

Anyone saying "fuck gilbert o'sullivan" is clearly an idiot who has never released music. If a rapper stole your music, and presented it as his own - I'm pretty you'd be pissed off too.

  6. g.... ....

This mediocre beat, sampling that average at best song is what killed the era of sampling? Damn Biz! Should've with stuck with Marley.

  7. S.... ....

This is not sampling - it is pure theft (and without permission).
The keyboards in the background play the original song's melody note by note.

  8. B.... ....

    Nobody beats THE BIZ

  9. t.... ....

Gilbert O'Sullivan's version is way better.

  10. T.... S....

This joint got me singing "Just a Friend" in this exact same key!

  11. M.... ....

People blame this for the death of sampling but it REALLY started and ended with Vanilla Ice.

  12. J.... Q....

So is Biz Markie able to get royalties on this song now that streaming services and all these other techs for music playing have come into the picture?

  13. R.... W....

nice trakk... forget gilbert sullivan he would do the samething if someone likes his songs

  14. O.... M....

Fuck you you literally fucking suck you ruined songs bitch🖕🏻🖕🏻🖕🏻🖕🏻🖕🏻🖕🏻🖕🏻🖕🏻🖕🏻🖕🏻🖕🏻

  15. R.... C....

Alone Again was pulled from the Biz Markie album I Need A Haircut after it was re-pressed without the illegal track.

  16. C.... D....

can't find it on apple music and spotify... of course

    C.... D....

    naturally

    C.... D....

Try listening to the original piece, ‘alone again - Naturally’ by Gilbert O’Sullivan

  17. M.... M....

I loved Biz!! Does anybody know what happened to him?? I miss these days. He was dope!!

  18. R.... D....

    The original fatboy sse

  19. R.... D....

    Not even that bad

  20. S.... J....

  22. Z.... C....

People who don't want things stolen shouldn't leave them out where everyone can get to them.

    Z.... C....

Huh?, the song was the #1 song in '72, was he supposed to "hide " it?.

  23. T.... M....

why would cliff even ask him for a ride if hes gonna say no anyway?

    T.... M....

Tom Matheson Coles Cliff was assuming that biz wanted a ride so he asked to confirm

    T.... M....

I know right??? That's fucked up...

  24. C.... E....

To be honest Gilbert O'Sullivan should see it as a homage instead of an insult

    C.... E....

    I second that motion

    C.... E....

Homage don't pay the bills. Pay the man.

  25. C.... E....

I really wished things were handled differently between Biz Markie and Gilbert O'Sullivan. The song was really good...a good use of two samples. Unfortunately industry rule number 4080 all samples must be cleared. Respect to Biz Markie and Gilbert O'Sullivan for creating good music none the less

  26. j.... ....

Gilbert O’Sullivan won 100% of the royalties of this song from Biz.😑

  27. M.... Z....

So this is the track that shut down the golden era of sampling. Whoopty damn doo.

  28. 1.... E....

The song that forever changed Hip Hop music

    1.... E....

Now it’s just interpolations (replayed samples).

  29. m.... ....

Is he singing through a pillow? lol

  30. m.... c....

terrible terrible, i am glad gilbert o'sullivan sued and best of all, he won his case and rightly too

    m.... c....

mark caine yeah because every idea is original smh have an open mind it’s sampling if u want me to be generous, a cover which exists in all genres

    m.... c....

Sampling is a polite word for theft of a musical idea.

    m.... c....

Hey you just blow in from rock music town why you on our side. Fuck off

  31. D.... U....

    Dope af

  32. T.... ....

2018 classic art of storytellin track

  33. J.... ....

Fuck O'Sullivan! No one passed up his 1972 song to buy Biz Markie! That fucker got 100% of the royalties...but he didn't write Biz's lyrics, so WTF? Actually fuck that judge whoever it was. Should've paid something, but it's a fucking basic beat with some piano...so he should pay for piano & chorus, but 100%? Fucked up music forever. ALL music borrows from the past... PERIOD.

  34. q.... ....

All he had to do was ask O'Sullivan if he can do a slight redo of his song and he woulda been cool. But he didn't...O'Sullivan sued and he won in court.

    q.... ....

he and his label did and were refused and went on to release it anyway hence being sued. asking for something does not mean you gonna get it

  35. M.... T....

All DJ Khaled does is take Juice Crew tracks and remake them with trap sounds

  36. M.... T....

    DJ Khaleds inspiration

  37. R.... S....

this song makes want to freeze ice cubes to make water

  38. M.... M....

...This is one of my favorite Biz Markie songs! F*ck Gilbert O'Sullivan!

    M.... M....

Andre Hendrix it’s not all about money, there is also a principle. Some may not want their work represented in a different way. And to say “he was going to get paid” isn’t good enough. You ask first, not simply take because it may not always be for sale.

    M.... M....

@Andre Hendrix Gee, were you going to go out and buy Osullivan's 1972 hit from Amazon download?, NOPE. Maybe he want's to die in peace without seeing his song ass-raped by this moron.

    M.... M....

Merce Mercero 🇵🇦 if it weren’t for Gilbert, Biz wouldn’t even have thought about making this song, Gilbert’s Version still better

    M.... M....

@Roger Vega I don't even call this a "song", it's just stolen music with a pathetic rap plastered all over it. Oh Biz asked Osullivan and once he heard it said 'no thanks", Biz just said F-it and released it anyway, that was until Warner was forced to recall EVERY CD in stores.

    M.... M....

    butchtropic relax bro

  39. R.... F....

That's Biz Markie? Man times have changed since the 90's!

  40. t.... ....

this is just a clever usage of that song. so biz forgot to get the permission. it's not his fault. o'sullivan could've just settled for a writing credit and half of the royalties.

    t.... ....

It was also apparently the judge's fault, as the presiding judge wanted to have Biz Markie et al criminally charged for sampling O'Sullivan's song (though Biz was never criminally charged), even opening the landmark decision with a freakin' Bible quote, "Thou Shalt Not Steal."

    t.... ....

Biz didnt forget to get it, he was DENIED permission & did it anyways

    t.... ....

He reached out, was denied and the label released it anyway.

    t.... ....

Making the song wasn’t crime, it was the label that decided to go ahead and release it.

  41. D.... J....

He got sued over this song for not clearing the sample. 👎🏽

    D.... J....

butchtropic agreed that Biz’s use of Alone Again was lack lustre and wasn’t innovative at all. I feel blessed though that thru sampling I discovered Bob James, Parliament, The Mowhawks, ESG, to name just a few.

    D.... J....

@butchtropic Which is what the Beasties did. In fact Hot Sauce Committee is basically them sampling things they made themselves in such a way to make the record geeks go mad trying to work out who and what they sampled.

    D.... J....

@Klaus Muller Wanna sample someone's music for free? Make your song a parody. You'll get off scott free.

    D.... J....

@Ruby Patterson Nope, you have to get permission and still pay a fee. Weird Al has said the more acts have every aspect of their image controlled the less he is able to spoof them.

    D.... J....

Weird Al asks permission because he personally wants to. Google "parody 1st amendment". Think about how a show like Robot Chicken can make fun of celebrities and companies and use their logos/catchphrases/music.

  42. d.... ....

shit i ain't heard this since before the lawsuit

    d.... ....

This lawsuit xhanged the game. Haven't heard this in decades

This was an abomination, that's what it was.

A talentless shit like you is entitled to an opinion. Now go fuck yourself.

  57. G.... ....

    So clear. Nice recording

  58. B.... B....

song is dope one of my favorite biz joints, but what's crazy is gilbert said he probably wouldn't have took this type of approach if the song wasn't so goofy (in his opinion), that still trips me out yell

    B.... B....

    true yell

    B.... B....

Especially since the song is not autobiographical. In fact, it weakens his case because “satire” is one of the ways you are allowed to reproduce a song. Weird Al doesn’t HAVE to ask for permission because it’s satire.

Famously, Coolio said “This ain’t Eat It” referring to Weird Al’s Beat It parody which was stupid in its own right since both songs (gangsters paradise and Beat It) were both about gang violence and one was Michael Jackson and one wasn’t. All songs should just be public domain after 3 years. That should be the rule. Also, it’s not like O’Sullivan was stingy with the rights. Looks at all the covers of Alone Again. Har Mar Superstar for God’s sake. He has no money. Also, to whomever said Biz’s career was ruined by this doesn’t follow music. His career fizzled as Hip Hop became more sophisticated and then he became Just a Friend of Hip Hop. ;)

    B.... B....

Adam Cohn Your argument is bullshit. Artists don't need permission to cover songs. They shouldn't need permission to sample either. Sampling is a legitimate art form, if you bothered to understand it.

    B.... B....

sd02231 Just because you’re moronic, don’t get mad at me. I agree with you and you don’t even realize. I was saying the song was a ironic one to have been the one to bring down sampling as it’s almost satire which is not needed to copyright. You have no reading comprehension and on top of it, I’ve been sampling since before you were in diapers so bump off that trip.

    B.... B....

@sd02231 No, you do not need permission to cover but here's the difference, if you sang and recorded someone else's song you would forfeit more than 50% of the royalties and a cover is not sampling, with sampling you are using parts of someone else's performance. Even if you do a cover, if it goes way off the rails compared to the original the artist then has the right to stop distribution. Of course he will not get any $$ in royalties though.

  59. M.... H....

The final deathblow to sampling productions and practices of the late 1980s came in 1991 in the form of the decision in the first lawsuit to address the issue of digital music sampling in relation to the copyright law. The case is officially called Grand Upright Music Ltd. v. Warner Bros. Records Inc., but is known in the music industry as the Biz Markie case. At the time, a New York rapper, Biz Markie, used a 10 second sample of singer-songwriter Gilbert O’Sullivan’s song Alone Again (Naturally) on his I Need a Haircut Album. Warner Brothers released the album before the license for it has yet been acquired, though it was applied for. Grand Upright Music, the copyright owner of the O’Sullivan’s work used by Biz Markie, sued for copyright infringement and for action against Biz Markie. The decision was swift and stark. The judge called it a clear cut case of theft, and ruled against Warner, ordering an immediate injunction of the album. Fair use was not even considered as an option. The album was pulled from the market, and the world of commercial music sampling got its legal precedent regarding licensing - it is not fair use, and cannot be done without the permission and the license from the copyright owner

    M.... H....

It was rereleased without this song. The original pressing is worth a ton of money! Peace.

    M.... H....

+Marti Hartung Since the melody AND the words are used throughout the song it is MORE than 10 seconds

    M.... H....

It's on a 10 second loop. And, if you aren't taking straight from a recording it's not owned by the record company but the publisher, which is a whole different monster.

    M.... H....

    @TM Tobin
Monster is right! Samplers have been sued (or threatened with being sued, so they are forced to stop playing the song in question) by either or BOTH the song writers and the song publishers; sometimes the artists/singer, but many times they are not even aware of the entire situation.

    M.... H....

I cannot believe I havent heard of this until recently. I really been diggin that gilber osullivan song and it brought me to this shit eventually haha I fuck with biz but dont know all of his records. Shits crazy tho. all that bullshit and we're still listening to it right here and now. Basically the only thing that accomplished is fuckin biz pockets up.

  60. M.... H....

The 1991 court case that radically changed the sampling practices in the music industry, Grand Upright Music Ltd. v. Warner Bros. Records Inc., concerned a 10 second sample of singer-songwriter Gilbert O’Sullivan’s song Alone Again (Naturally)

  61. C.... K....

    Can't hate on the Biz.

  62. C.... K....

Biz Markie is a legend! I love to hear samples from the past it shows me how broad of a music fanatic an artist can be.

    C.... K....

I'm alone ever day until somebody comes my way

    C.... K....

    Y'all gay

nice beat and biz those his thing

    J.... R....

The "beat" is a stolen track from '72, "Biz" got his lame ass sued off and LOST everything, broke again, naturally!

    @butchtropic lost everything ? Nice try ;)

    J.... R....

@Schattenmensch Kua Your right, after paying Gilbert off he had an '01 Saturn and some goofy cloths left.

Dis is pretty good. Some people may not like it but biz markie has a nice catchy voice.

    A.... ....

    How so?

    A.... ....

Oh cus Gilbert O'Sullivan sued haha

  65. k.... ....

Gilbert O'Sullivan's song "Alone Again" came out in 1972, btw

    k.... ....

I found this song from Copyright Criminals

  66. b.... ....

When the rap art form started to make money it was lost. Imagine for every guitar riff 50% went to Gibson or other makers. Sampling is misunderstood due to the general public not having experience making beats.

    b.... ....

The general public, especially elitist composers, do not understand the historical and material contexts of sampling.

    b.... ....

    beast44506 facts

    b.... ....

Very well said! Hip-hop makes EVERYTHING better! Peace.

  67. C.... R....

Gilbert O'Sullivan actually sued this artist because he had unauthorised use of the song, hence the Grand Uptight Records vs. Warner Bros. Record legal case. Artists who sample songs like this are purely just taking credit for someone else's work, if someone did that at a university, it would be known as plagiarism. Don't see why musicians can get away with it. Gilbert O'Sullivan's 'Alone Again (Naturally)' was known as one of the sounds of 1972. Its by no means being petty at all.

    C.... R....

And that's why you don't understand art, bud

  68. g.... ....

I agree. It's like the audio equivalent of collage artwork. Should artists be compensated for samples? Yes. But not 50%. If a 3 minute song earns $1 million & there's a 2 second sample in it, divide & do the math. Plus, deduct 50% from that figure, because the artist that uses the sample, is also artistically contributing. The judge in the O'Sullivan case ruled that, even a 0.25 second snare drum sample, is the same is stealing an entire song. That is not true, not fair & just, plain not right!

    g.... ....

Yeah... But if the chorus is the most memorable part of the sequence and the rest is a load of unmemorable irrelevant, 'gabble' then this guy is TAKING THE PISS!!!
And he GOT CAUGHT and SUED!!!
BE ORIGINAL BOYZ.... It's the best and most productive way...
Don't be a pussy and cash in on someone elses talent...
    NOT COOL !!! --- NASTY

    g.... ....

quantumellon wow you obviously have no clue about making Hip-Hop

    g.... ....

@MC Zappa then it should be made with cleared samples.

  69. g.... ....

IMO it was deeper than that. At the time, rap/hip-hop was despised by many people. (NWA's Straight Outta Compton was one of the first albums to get a Parental Advisory label, Ice Tea's Cop Killer, etc) The genre was so heavily dependent on samples, I think the judge felt that by banning samples, or making them so expensive to use, he'd single-handedly destroy hip-hop. The judge knew NOTHING about music, art, etc. I think he just personally hated hip-hop & was on a personal crusade to destroy it.

  70. D.... ....

when did he take this picture?

    D.... ....

    DjInEffect its drawn

  71. E.... ....

No he didn't Biz got the ok...but O'Sullivan's lawyers somehow made it seem as though the label was aware that the song belonged to somebody else...but that that they didn't have ample enough clearance. Which was bullshit, it was O'Sullivan's greedy douchebag lawyers that persued the suit though.

  72. M.... G....

Is Gilbert O'Sullivan going to sue youtube for having this song available since he sued Biz for using the sample?

    M.... G....

    Ofcourse they're not you CHIMP!
Gilbert-o-Sullivan was ripped off by his own record producer when he was 21 years old and vowed that he'd not let any other person rip his songs off before you were fucking born!!!
Your Biz buddy is a rip off merchant who called his song, "Alone Again" and then routinely used the phrase Alone Again Naturally separated by totally unmemorable verses to make HIS song...
Why would you think that Gilbert-o-Sullivan would sue Youtube for publishing the song that OBVIOUSLY plagerizes his original hit of 1967?
YOU GUYS NEED TO GET REALITY AND THEN A LIFE!!!
    AND THEN... SOME ORIGINALITY.

    M.... G....

quantumellon and you need to learn how to stop typing in all caps.

  73. j.... j....

This is the definitive case that changed the way the hip-hop world composed music using samples. Before this case artists sampled other artist's works freely without compensation.

Initially,Biz asked permission to use the sample. Gilbert was a little guarded with his songs and knowing the comedic nature of Biz declined permission. Biz used it anyway, without compensation. Ol' Gilly felt he was pressured into pursuing the lawsuit and he wished that the whole thing didn't even happen.

  74. R.... A....

Stealing but it's still there. Still living with your mom are ya?

  75. g.... r....

sampling is a form of compliment if anything. Shows your music is inspiring to others.

  76. G.... ....

Fuck everyone man music is music you either like it or stfu and if you say sampling is stealing...oh but you don't say anything about the corporate fat kats that take your money do you?
