Billy Joel - An Innocent Man Lyrics

Some people stay far away from the door
If there's a chance of it opening up
They hear a voice in the hall outside
And hope that it just passes by

Some people live with the fear of a touch
And the anger of having been a fool
They will not listen to anyone
So nobody tells them a lie

I know you're only protecting yourself
I know you're thinking of somebody else
Someone who hurt you but I'm not above
Making up for the love
You've been denying you could ever feel
I'm not above doing anything
To restore your faith if I can

Some people see through the eyes of the old
Before they ever get a look at the young
I'm only willing to hear you cry
Because I am an innocent man

I am an innocent man
Oh yes I am

Some people say they will never believe
Another promise they hear in the dark
Because they only remember too well
They heard somebody tell them before

Some people sleep all alone every night
Instead of taking a lover to bed
Some people find that's it's easier to hate
Than to wait anymore

I know you don't want to hear what I say
I know you're gonna keep turning away
But I've been there and if I can survive
I can keep you alive
I'm not above going through it again
I'm not above being cool for a while
If you're cruel to me I'll understand

Some people run from a possible fight
Some people figure they can never win
And although this is a fight I can lose
The accused is an innocent man

I am an innocent man
Oh yes I am
An innocent man

You know you only hurt yourself out of spite
I guess you'd rather be a martyr tonight
That's your decision but I'm not below
Anybody I know
If there's a chance of resurrecting a love
I'm not above going back to the start
To find out where the heartache began

Some people hope for a miracle cure
Some people just accept the world as it is
But I'm not willing to lay down and die
Because I am an innocent man

I am an innocent man
Oh yes I am
An innocent man

listening to this so much reminds me of the 80's. Billy always brings back good memories, class songwriter.

  2. Australia4031

I know you are only protecting your self, I know you are thinking of someone else. someone who hurt you but I'm not above making up for the love you've been denying you could ever feel.

  3. catherine powell

A true genius in songwriter. His music keeps stunning me, 20 years later after first falling love with it. Thank you.

  4. a4s2reckonwith

I was in High School when it came out. I had the album. Still great. Hadn't heard it in a while though.

  5. Richard Foster

    80's girlfriend's bedroom, memories!

  6. omneshomines

If you can really restore my faith and love, I would sacrifice everything I can.

  7. Victor Charles a.k.a. VicGChad07

My planned gift for Vic Mignogna: a Japan 45 copy of "An Innocent Man" with the B-side being a live performance of "I'll Cry Instead".

  8. Rose Walsh

    Beautiful words.. Love

  9. Jacob Hope

    Amazing sing

  10. paulg309s16

Started to listen to Billy when my Dad came back from Saudi with bootleg tapes in heat proof covers.
I thought I was a strange child loving Billy, motown, the beach Boys, the stones Beatles, wings, boney m, Jeff Lynn etc.
    Greatest single song writer ever.

  11. Tuffy Badass

This boring song made the top ten while The Longest Time and Keeping the Faith didn't? Pffftt...

  12. LT MN

I'm loving Piano Man... My fave at the mo.

  13. Black Jack

    Under rated song

  14. TheRecoveringZombie

A gentle song about understanding another person's pain and being empathetic and supportive. We need more of this.

  15. Stephen Swan

    great tune

  16. Mark

Didn't give this song a second thought as a teenager in the 80's, took middle age for me to appreciate what an amazing song this is.

    LT MN

The words are just... I'm sure you understand.

    tony brooks

I agree. Too much information for a teenager!

    Deca Cards52

Billy was 34 the time, yet he had so much wisdom that he put in his songs.

  17. Salinah Yahaya

cincau & 5bucu are about sidelining 'others'
Q: what are your options when everyone in warung pakLeman are faking their orgasms?

Billy Joel is one helluva songwriter and performer. His songs sparkle like gems no matter how much time passes. In fact, they get even better and better as the years go by. I've been listening to his work since "Piano Man" came out and there are few songwriters over the past forty plus years who can measure up to him.

  22. Ron Lawless

Great lyrics & vocals! Pure quality.

  23. Johnny G

His voice never sounded better then on this classic song

  24. Household Dog

Why has this only got 700k views?

  25. Chris Hickey

and now in this era we have celebrity xfactor....we've created a society more concerned with 'ego' than genuine talent like Billy. If heaven does exist, then Freddie Mercury is pissing himself over the dross in this era!

  26. Malena Tully

    I love this song.

" some people see through the eyes of the old before they ever get a look at the Young"... I am 45 years old and realize getting old sucks and that youth is truly wasted on the young... when we have the World by the balls we don't realize it... live your life because I would imagine failure is better than regret

That incredible combination of a fantastic voice and a mind that can write what so many of us see in and of our lives! Absolutely wonderful. Like so many others I wish I could not only write these mind bending words but put them into song. As Paul Newman once said, a man’s got to know his limitations. Thanks Billy!

  81. Stormer

Anyone that dislikes this song is dead inside.

  82. Amy Guitar

Back in the day, we all speculated this was a lover or psychiatrist speaking to a lost girl...but now, can we just apply it to every-day-dealing with our current troubled humans?

    canadaman1786

After a lot of years listening to Billy songs, I always thought it was a guy, trying to win a girl over with a serious, but sensitive side...
And now, I like to think it worked,
and "State Of Grace" is the sequel, where they get married, but he can still see a little doubt in her eyes...

  83. John Gibbons

    GOOD OLLL 80's

  84. Jason Richards

  85. Colin Webster

Wonderful album I heard first in 1983 - now I'm in love again - it's just perfect.

  86. imat Roll

Most people don't need an L and and an R on the tips of their left and right shoe, most people don't need a warning sign to tell them stop eating glue, most people wouldn't go to Hitler's estate disguised as a Hasidic Jew. But then most people don't suck boatloads of ass and Billy's an ignorant man. He is an ignorant m-yaya-n.

  87. Felix Ocasio

    One of my favorites.

  88. nope not me
