Billy Bragg - Greetings To The New Brunette Lyrics

Shirley
It's quite exciting to be sleeping here in this new room
Shirley
You're my reason to get out of bed before noon

Shirley
You know when we sat out on the fire escape talking
Shirley
What did you say about running before we were walking

Sometimes when we're as close as this
It's like we're in a dream
How can you lie there and think of England
When you don't even know who's in the team

Shirley
Your sexual politics have left me all of a muddle
Shirley
We are joined in the ideological cuddle

I'm celebrating my love for you
With a pint of beer and a new tattoo
And if you haven't noticed yet
I'm more impressionable when my cement is wet

Politics and pregnancy
Are debated as we empty our glasses
And how I love those evening classes

Shirley
You really know how to make a young man angry
Shirley
Can we get through the night without mentioning family

The people from your church agree
It's not much of a career
Trying the handles of parked cars
Whoops, there goes another year
Whoops, there goes another pint of beer

Here we are in our summer years
Living on icecream and chocolate kisses
Would the leaves fall from the trees
If I was your old man and you were my missus

Shirley
Give my greetings to the new brunette
Give my greetings to the new brunette
Give my greetings to the new brunette

  15. T.... ....

Who else thinks this is about a relationship with an older woman? Is it just because of all the older women I've been with that I hear the song this way? Just curious what other people think.

  19. S.... F....

    No words ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

  20. D.... M....

Video is a must see to this wonderful song

  21. z.... s....

Best of braggs tunes but didn't get high enough chart position. Marrs guitars stand right out, nice bits of preverb n 12 strings.

  22. I.... P....

always reminds me of travelling from newport to Catterickt  drinking cans of mccewans red

  23. z.... s....

By far the best bragg song, perfect 12string and lead played by johnny marr. You can tell its him a mile off, and the backwards effects on lead which the smiths used sparingly in songs like "well I wonder". Great tune.

  24. L.... ....

Some songs lose meaning as you get older. For me, this one just becomes more poignant. Ah, the wistful days of adolescence. Love you Billy.

  25. R.... B....

    nice one Billy!

  26. C.... M....

What I owe this special man is indescribable. You were my second hero. Spiderman was my first. I met you in 1990 at the Mean Fiddler and you were patient, sweet and encouraging. Thank you from the bottom of this man's heart.

  27. A.... R....

    Its so sweet.

  28. A.... o....

this hits the same heart strings as old rancid for me

  29. r.... ....

Will always remind me of my girl

  30. D.... S....

I always loved this song. The video does nothing for me. completely ruins it. Better to think of the late 1980's being young and broke in Thatcher's England. And yet having fun.

  31. M.... G....

    Good Ole Miss Ouiser

  41. D.... S....

For some reason this song always makes me want to cry.

    D.... S....

it's the melody. it's that exact kind of chord structure that tries to tug your heart out of your chest in the best possible way

    D.... S....

Now you know why old folks cry when they're happy.

    D.... S....

Dawn Sutton remains me jail and lost love I was 17

    D.... S....

    Dawn Sutton same

    D.... S....

    Me too!!!!

  42. R.... T....

This always reminds me of the first time Is aw Billy back in 1982. He was doing the Red Wedge tour at Stockport Town Hall and the candidate for the election was called Shirley Haines. She was there and he sung it to her. I've seen him loads of time since but thats where it all began!

  43. o.... ....

Reminds me of an England I never knew as kid - the England in my mind's eye when I remember England before I left for good.

    o.... ....

let me guess - you moved to America right? In no other country on earth would someone say they work "for a great corporation" unless they were being ironic oh and you typed math rather than maths. Please remember to vote for Trump next month.

    o.... ....

Funny how it's easy to forget that a common language has slight differences "math vs. maths" - yes, moved the US. In my day, u left school and that was it; no second chance. For me, I am grateful to the US. I'm undecided on my vote; if anything, cannot say its been a boring election.

    o.... ....

Clinton is a monster - that story about her getting that rapist off and then smiling at the victim in the courtroom sealed it for me.Trump is the best bet - although I'm just grateful that I'm not poor and living in the US as he will do nothing for them - even the gains from Obama care will be scaled down. The US is at a turning point in its history - unless something radical happens it will be a steady decline to irrelevance like Europe.

    o.... ....

That's the first sentence of your great novel.

    o.... ....

haha just reading your 1 year old chestnut. Wow. It's not a story. It's a recording. And if you'd actually listened to it, you'd hear the same nervous laugh that I hear. First, people in her position have no choice but to use the law to the best of their ability for the clients they are assigned. To me her laugh suggests disbelief or at least shared shock in what happened. Not, "buahahaha! I got him off bitches!" which is what you and every other Trumpster continues to imply happened. =)

  44. D.... ....

Woah! Oarsome use of a dalek in a music video! :D

  45. T.... ....

One of the most beautiful Bragg's songs!!!

    T.... ....

Tank park salute is way up there as well.

  46. P.... G....

He is such a great and underrated artist!

    P.... G....

Pitsome Gear most likely bc of his socialist, pro-worker message

  47. T.... N....

if this don't make you feel better today... what hope do we have?

  48. T.... H....

    I adore this song.

  49. E.... B....

    love this toon!

  50. J.... H....

My college tutor is called Shirley...can't email her without getting this song stuck in my head!

  51. 1.... a....

    Johnny Marr on guitar!

    1.... a....

    +Vseslav Botkin

    Not is this version.

    1.... a....

+deljzc actually yeah he does, he plays the electric guitar at the end. It's just on the other version he plays way more on, but he still plays on this version too.

    1.... a....

Vseslav Botkin MacColl on backing vocals I believe

    1.... a....

deljzc who knows the sound of The Smiths recognises his guitar far from one light year.. ;)

  52. R.... B....

This sounds like a song Noel Gallagher would like

    R.... B....

+RedYellow Blue Noel Gallagher is the ultimate bell end

    R.... B....

    I hope that was sarcasm.

  53. T.... ....

reminds me of my mum . no longer of this world . Past away 11/11/91 . forever in my heart shirley A B . rest .

    T.... ....

a very touching comment - it's a great song to remember somebody by.

  54. j.... c....

I was pregnant when this was released. Really wanted to call my daughter Shirley, 28 years later my daughter Susie says she would never have forgiven me.

    j.... c....

@joan costard This is my favourite song and I am currently pregnant with a girl, I considered it but my hubby talked me out of it! I still think Shirley is a lovely name.

    j.... c....

haha. as a non-english native it's hard to imagine what's wrong with the name? I think I'd pick shirley over susie, but that's just me ^^
    @Ree Jones

  55. J.... P....

    Woops, there goes another year.

  56. D.... R....

Makes me think of Shirley Frieh Kowalski

    w.... ....

weylon it failed the charts only reaching #58 (I could be wrong) and this song appeared on Now That's What I Call Music! 8 (UK Edition)

  67. A.... K....

Riding in the back of my friends van driving to Seattle, living in Washington state going to the boat building school - opening a letter from my best friend, sending me this tape from the East Coast - and me begging my friends to let me listen on the cassette player and hearing this for the first time - through the smoke and beer, it was....awesome. I never looked back!

    A.... K....

  81. n.... ....

Oops there goes another pint of beer.
To both you Billy & the late Kristy Mc Call (RIP).
    Fantastically evocative tune.
Reminds me of the sad Thatcher years, miners strikes, black outs & rioting people against the poll tax.
    A bittersweet slice of nostalgia.

  82. C.... ....

As much of a cockend he can be at times, at least Morrissey can be funny as fuck!

  83. J.... L....

as good as anything Neil young has done

  89. C.... ....

Bragg is a preachy little 99% soap-box fuckwit. But wow! Personal feelings about the man aside, this truly is a fantastic tune!

  90. c.... b....

@WhatsernameGeeGeeJo Oh my god, your're right. That's awesome.

  97. G.... ....

@mikenayl 'Coz the internet gives them an anonymous voice and they think what they say is clever. All going well, the cynics grow up to learn that cynicism isn't 'intelligence' or 'acumen'...it's just negativity in a suit. Enjoy the music and don't feed the trolls ;-)
    Peace.

  98. j.... a....

    wonderful stuff.....genius in fact.. <3
