Billie Holiday - These Foolish Things Lyrics

A cigarette that bares a lipstick's traces
An airline ticket to romantic places
Still my heart has wings
These foolish things remind me of you
A tinkling piano in the next apartment
Those stumblin' words
That told you what my heart meant
A fair ground painted swings
These foolish things remind me of you

You came, you saw, you conquered me
When you did that to me
I knew somehow this had to be
The winds of march that made my heart a dancer
A telephone that rings but who's to answer
Oh, how the ghost of you clings
These foolish things remind me of you

Billie Holiday These Foolish Things Comments
  1. D.... B....

I fear the young might never hear Billie on this track. She starts singing after a minute and a half by which time the millennial generation would have listened to five tracks on their iPad.

    D.... B....

I'm young and I'm listening to this after Ella Fitzgerald's version being my new favourite song.

Billy Murray Fan Most everybody is here to simply enjoy the music. Please stop commenting on these videos. You’re only spreading hatred.

  5. N.... R....

She could sound wistful and heartbroken all at the same time.

    👍🎶❤️

  8. C.... S....

Billy had such a unique way of tugging at the heart strings of even the most apathetic of us. If you can't feel it, you ain't anyone.

  9. c.... m....

Pacing the floor in his 30th floor condo...staring through the cigarette smoke at the white, grey and black palette of the room, he sees a Playbill that fell on the floor,, next to the Eero Saarinen longe, and vividly recalls how much she loved "Raisin In the Sun", and the way her silk scarf blew in his eyes as they left the theatre...remembers her face as she laughed her girlish squeal because he was temporarily blinded by the scarf...he remembers...

"Billie Holiday's rendering of the song with Teddy Wilson's orchestra was a favorite of Philip Larkin, who said, 'I have always thought the words were a little pseudo-poetic, but Billie sings them with such passionate conviction that I think they really become poetry.'"

  11. V.... R....

    Thxx ❤️

  12. w.... -....

In the TV series from 2012 "Alcatraz", this song is being played... a much more sultry, slower version... know what I'm talking about???

    w.... -....

waanaabe - Maybe it's Ella's version ? She did many of Billie's songs, but hers were always slower

    w.... -....

I think it was Billie's 2nd recorded version from 1952 -- definitely sultrier and slower, and one of the masterpieces of her last decade.

  13. E.... R....

She is very very very beautiful singer and songwriter and musician she is amazing she has a amazing voice

  14. L.... L....

anyone who can suggest jazz pieces similar to as 0:10 to 0:30 instrumental only

  17. J.... D....

It just does not get better than this

  18. I.... ....

Hand to god--I only know of this song because of "Salo, or the 120 Days of Sodom." Am I the only one who discovered it that way?

    I.... ....

    Unfortunately no

  19. V.... S....

It seems that she is singing more acutely than usual

  20. g.... ....

Sam Cooke did a good job with this song

  21. w.... D....

If Neil Gaiman is gonna quote a song in his pieces, you better believe you're gonna need to listen

  22. m.... ....

    Lady Day...

  23. G.... W....

    Is the pianist Teddy Wilson?

    G.... W....

    +james sullivan Thank You!!!

    G.... W....

+Gustavo Weckesser Amazing how the Mistress isn't brought in till 1:30.  Such was the style of vocal jazz at that time, the singer a complement to the instrumentalists.

    G.... W....

@JamesSullivan: No Eldridge, no Lester Young here. Trumpet Jonah Jones, baritone Harry Carney, alto Johnny Hodges. Wilson is correct.

    G.... W....

Thanks for the correction.  Harry Carney was a great admirer of Adrian Rollini; another example of white and black collaboration.

    G.... W....

@MrJimmienoone Huh. I guessed Johnny Hodges. Never heard of Jonah Jones.

  24. M.... A....

    chills down my spine classic

  25. B.... C....

    Simply Beautiful.

  26. K.... ....

I have to say I am a huge fan. Every song I hear I can instantly pick out her voice.
    Love her music.
When I heard this on 'Corrina, Corrina' I knew it was her!

Aww the times when men were men and women were women. Haha I sound so old fashioned...but my old soul speaks for itself ;)

  27. Z.... ....

Kako bi samo divno bilo slusati je uzivo :(

  28. A.... ....

    Such a nice song

  29. R.... ....

Is there any more achingly romantic and yet tragic era in modern history than the the late 30s/early 40s?
Pour me another 1 Rick and play it again Sam... and Lady Day...
Here's lookin at you kid ... Gotta love it...

  30. V.... P....

    Quintessentially Billie great !!

  31. C.... ....

Yep, i was without doubt born in the wrong era.

    C.... ....

Yeah! The Great Depression, the brink of a Second World War, and less accessibility to music! Better trade this website with literally 1000s of years worth of music for that.

    C.... ....

No, your all wrong/rite. She was born in the wrong era.
I'm sure Billie & Amy would have made sweet music. RIP. both.
All the true greats leave us wanting more, sure we can all come up with similar lists.

    C.... ....

    musically speaking (maybe)

    C.... ....

no you have access to this music and if you were alive then probably not and even if you did you wouldn't be able to listen to it with this ease or even the quality of using headphones

    C.... ....

Funny that. I never think it. Maybe because I'm old enough to remember all these songs via my mother. I never cease to think of these songs, and Billie's unequaled interpretations, as my own. My own = my era!

  32. F.... W....

Man, get my like, u deserve this..

  33. E.... .....

"Because one dog ain't enough, and two is too low, it's me, Three Dog!"

  34. M.... B....

    Guess what - nobody cares.

  35. S.... I....

What a great vibe Billie had with all her songs. Great upload.

  36. E.... S....

so would have love to have been alive when these amazing singers were around <3

    E.... S....

Elizabeth Sinnott probably not....would have been a hard life.

  37. E.... S....

    such a amazing song <3

  38. l.... ....

Yes,conveniently available maybe... but isn't it different to go at ''Hang your hat at Mr. Kelly's'' or ''painting the town'' at another famous jazz club where you can notice Charlie Parker drunk as usual and Dizzie trying to take him home, Billie performing at the stage and in the audience Jack Kerouac writing his poetry and novels and Thelonious chatting to Pannonica about his last performance. I'm not saying I was born in the wrong era. I am just saying that it may be magical to see all that.

  39. S.... K....

    Fear not.

  40. d.... ....

    May she never be forgotten.

  41. B.... K....

100 % on the same page with razza779 's comment! (below)
born in the wrong era but still have the voice & soul!

  42. G.... K....

A piano, claironet, sax, drums, another piano, bass, and Billie, it seemed enough did it not?

  43. I.... ....

Out of all the soulful ladies, Billie sang the standards the best, hands down.

  44. B.... R....

    @razza779
Luckily, you were born in an era where great things such as this song are so conveniently available. ;)

  45. M.... ....

I feel Iike I was born in the world century, because I love this music it's so smoothing and understanding. Everything that Billie has sang is truely remarkable.

    I love it.... 8)
