Bill Callahan - Bathysphere Lyrics

When I was seven
I asked my mother
To trip me to the bay
And put me on a ship
And lower me down
Lower me out of here

Because when I was seven
I wanted to live in a bathysphere

Between coral
Silent eel
Silver swordfish
I can't really feel or dream down here

And if the water should cut my line
And if the water should cut my line
Set me free
And if the water should cut my line
Set me free, I don't mind
I'll be the lost sailor, my home is the sea

When I was seven
My father said to me
'But you can't swim'
And I've never dreamed of the sea again

Damn 1995?! I would have guessed early to mid 2000's at least. Definitely before it's time.

Wild Love was mostly an album of fleeting emotions and restrained songwriting, hardly rooted in traditional musical logic, a collection of odd vignettes touching on wildly abstract characters and messages but delivered with urgency bordering on insanity and unnerving authenticity. It was one of the most intense and idiosyncratic albums of its time. The visceral lament "Bathysphere", set to a gaudy drum loop, could have been a non-ballad of Ian Curtis, while "Wild Love" and "Bathroom Floor" were chamber impressions set to distinctly different tones. A handful of tracks displayed a penchant for odd novelty experiments, as in "The Emperor" or "Be Hit". "Prince Alone in the Studio" took the style to an extreme, a hypnotic epic that seemed at home with King Crimson's darkest atmospheres. "Goldfish Bowl" ended the album with a lunatic vision of a disintegrating relationship, supported by its unnerving pop atmosphere. Every song seemed honest and heartfelt, but yet examined with the detached eye of a Cubist and stripped down to the point that their complex emotions became mere abstractions.  RoiOzine Sep 14 2012 ▼+1

Moving away from his lo-fi roots with the help of rian murphy, jim o'rourke and his then girlfriend cynthia dall, but its still formative stuff really despite the presence of cello's and chamberlains.

'bathysphere' is probably his first great song, but much of the shorter songs on 'wild love' can be described as indistinct scratch and scribble. Much better is 'its rough' and 'prince alone in the studio'. The latter typical of the humorous side of his writing, while 'be hit' captures the darker, more disturbing side of callahan's pre-occupations.

A real mixed bag this, considering I got it at an excellent sale price on vinyl i'm minded to think of it as an EP for "Bathysphere", "It's Rough", "Sleepy Joe" and "Prince Alone in the Studio", the other tracks are seemingly experiments that are mildly diverting at best but mostly quite uncomfortable and preferably skipped (such as "The Candle" "Be Hit" and "The Emperor".

Still fascinating to see the development of what became one of my favourite artists by the time of A River Ain't Too Much to Love and the solo records. However, I will bear in mind what another reviewer has said and will not sell this!

As an aside I was entertaining my daughter with some interpretive dramatic dance to "Prince Alone in the Studio" which she seemed to be enjoying before asking "can you put "Beat It" on next?". I laughed. I cried.  ijkidd Jun 30 2017 rateyourmusic.com/release/album/smog/wild-love/

Lovely to see another lesser known music connoisseur. Smog has some lovely sounds.
