Big Star - You And Your Sister Lyrics
They say my love for you ain't real
But you don't know how real it feels
All I want to do
Is to spend some time with you
So I can hold you, hold you
Your sister says that I'm no good
I'd reassure her if I could
All I want to do
Is to spend some time with you
So I can hold you, hold you
Plans fail every day
I want to hear you say
Your love won't be leaving (Run Run, Run Run)
Your eyes ain't deceiving (Run Run, Run Run)
Smile now, don't be afraid
All I want to do
Is to spend some time with you
So I can hold you, hold you
And let me whisper in your ear
Don't you worry, they can't hear
All I want to do
Is to spend some time with you
So I can hold you

Big Star You And Your Sister Comments
Big Star should have been huge. When Chris left it was all but over......Then it was over.
If Chris Bell, Alex Chilton and Bill Lloyd had started a band......
Damn...this never fails to bring the brimming of resonant tears. A seminal voice, sad poet laureate, shining star snuffed out by Fate's cruel triad, tender unrealized impact on the tragically fortunate too few so touched, so moved, so inspired to have heard angels muse and mortals wept. Thanks isn't enough, brother... I played this song for my sister on her birthday (her 1st time hearing from you) & it was a transformative few moments for both of us).✨👍👏🌠🍻🎶🔊

One of the best 25 songs of all time
"so i can hold you"... such a beautiful song.
What the hell?
With Alex Chilton , a last glimpse of the genius . absolutely perfect pop tune.
I think of my daughters when I hear this song. I have been out of their lives for a long time and miss them both very much!
Don’t think I’m judging you when I say this, but I hope you do everything you can to be a part of their lives. I have the same problem with my son. We shall work to receive the love of our kin. There is much for a child to learn from their fathers. It’s never too late.
What a beautiful song
quiero llorar, esta cancion es bellisima
I was a Box Top fan but, they didn't hold a candle to Big Star.
So sad and sweet at the same time. His voice is barely holding back from cracking.
There are 3 songs that make me cry: Reflections of my life by Marmalde, Alone again by Gilbert O'Sullivan and You and your sister by Chris Bell.
Check this out....Reflections Of My Life, sung by the same singer 36 years apart!https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Dn9bAvWS4RU
beautiful <3
I used to date this beautiful girl, but her twin sister didn't like me. I downloaded this song off limewire to put on a mix-tape for her, but never did, just listened to it over and over instead. My love for her was pure and real, and she touched my soul--but her sister helped turn her against me--just out of jealousy, I think, and because they were rich and I wasn't. I'm long over it now, of course, but whenever I hear this song I think of them. They were quite a pair.
Oooofff... That just landed on me like a ton of bricks...
Beautiful harmonies with Alex ...
sweetness
I knew This Mortal Coil's version sung by Kim Deal. Prefer the cover.

the sweetest, most innocent song written if ever there was one... breaks my heart every time
#Ross T I have was in the business from 7 8 agent the whole 9 worked with the most brilliant on stage. But You comment I feel the opposite I have had a broken heart but hide it, I can read someone from there eyes, ChrisI lost my husband sadly two by 25, For myself as I have respect my first husband sadly had this pain struggled so badly with it ,Was gifted, brilliant talented Less Paul discovered him by 14 one thing that saved him as long as it did?Music ,creating, self expression music.Lost my second to the gulf war I so think Chris was brilliant the best all lost at 27 all amazing gifted musicians Peace Love
Clube 27 me trouxe aqui
A masterpiece of heartbreak.
Carolina !!
guitar riff sounds a little like "here comes the sun"
Beautiful. One of the finest melancholy love songs ever.
Amen! Sugref.,
Tough to make it all the way through with dry eyes.
I have a beer or 2 and this just slays me!
Happy Birthday, Chris. Your music melts my heart. Rest In Peace.
Beautiful!
Exquisite. . Holding on to beautiful
This song has so many dimensions. One: Read about Chris and Alex. Walk a mile in Memphis. Imagine being either one of them the 1970s. Or now. Then listen again.
I don't see what the big deal is. What am I missing? I can listen to the Moody Blues.
OK, so listen to the Moody Blues. This is much better than anything they ever did.
Works better as a lesbian love song. Search for the This Mortal Coil version.
Yeah, I'm gonna get right on that.
so innocent, so depressing, so beautiful
I wanted to tell Chris that plans aren't hope :'(
rainy day standard
it doesn't get any cooler or more beautiful than this...
10 people have no soul
15 soulless motherfuckers... and counting.
@Bill Harmon 42 souless
heavenly.
so lovely every single time you hear it
Big Star Fourth
axwell21 Fourth Sister
I wonder if it's hard to play that on guitar...
Nope, not that hard. The singing however: I can't hit the high notes any more!
Yeah, the vocals
incredible harmonies.
I mean, just listen to the vocals. It's like Simon & Garfunkel dark and in pain. Treble like Kurt Cobain in some songs. But there's no likeness, it's so pure.
Puedo escucharla todo el día...! Gracias Chris Bell <3
Chris and Alex, together for the last time. The bridge is harmonically complex.
Wasn't their last time..
So underestimated this guy,Alex's isn't as good as as this:this is the real one, thanks for uploading.
+Roel Lassche Whoa, whoa, whoa, you can't compare these two. That's like comparing peanut butter and jelly. There's just no need to when you could have them together in one delicious sandwich.
why do these guys die before 30 and the scaries live to 94?? some karma we got working
This rocks my soul
whoever disliked this can lick my balls for 24 hours
Hmm, you called my bluff. To be honest, I'm pretty crappy at ball-licking. Unless the balls are my own, and I've just completed a 70-mile bike ride.
Thanks. I've often said the same thing.
@Glorified Truth that's what working out should look lik
babyscream that might be really fun! But let's break for really exciting meals and fun dips in the ocean!
I really wish i could just listen to the song and not think about shitpipes.
Brilliant song. Extraordinary singer/songwriter.
I am obsessed with Big Star and in particular Chris Bell..He throws all he has into his songs and his voice makes that clear. His songs rival Brian Wilsons sadness and melancholy. On Big Star Number 1 Record, the background vocal arrangements, all over the album, are stellar..Wish there were more ( in fact any) video performances of Chris Bell era Big Star.
+Jay Harris Yeah, me too. It would've been really nice to have footage of him performing live. But as far as I know he was reluctant to go touring, so I doubt there's live footage of the Bell-era Big Star.
He was the Big Star sound
Me too; the "Thank You Friends" video is the closest we can get to them, I think.
This mans music will echo through generations
"Plans fail everyday"
Hace muy poco descubrí a Big Star y a Chris Bell. Maravillosos!!!
What a classic. Like a more mature version of Big Star classic 'Thirteen'.
Aqib Kazi Yes. It's like Thirteen turned Seventeen and is trying to ask his best girl to prom.
I cry so much everytime I hear this song, is just perfect Chris I Love You
Now I'm crying.
+AlabasterSmudge (: the voices of Chris and Alex together are perfect for me
This is one of the most achingly beautiful songs ever written
I started to listen to this at work, and I had to turn it off. Too emotional, but beautiful.
Listen to how heartbroken he is...
the bit where he goes high,"is spend some time with you"......sigh,so moving.
Chris and Alex. Nuff said.
Magical combination. I'd listen to them sing anything together. It's the combination of their voices that makes it so special.
How much more beautiful can a tune be?? We miss you Chris....
@Susan Edrington & Alex......xoxo
I cried the first time I heard this song.
love this song :)
@Trine Larsen only bettered by "cosmo"
youandwhosearmy?
well, I like this one very much :)
Perfect in every detail.
David Nicholson Residents profile picture on a Chris Bell song is a thumbs up from meeeee
This is the closest to a classic "Big Star" tune as you can get with Alex and Chris on it.
@Mike Gervasi Just finished watching to Documentary "Nothing Can Hurt Me Now" They played this & "I am the Cosmos" totally floored by Chris Bell's voice I had previously been aware of these tracks as they were recorded as renditions by This Mortal Coil along with Big Star's Kangaroo & Holocaust As much I truly adore the TMC versions These originals are just sublime
Sounds a lot like a badfinger song. So do a lot of the Big Star songs. Badfinger the most underrated band of their time.
The badfinger of America
Luke Lemaster Badfinger... sigh...they were so wonderful. loved pete ham's voice and guitar. so sad, their story.
Luke Lemaster actually bs are more like a southern version of the american beatles
The were peer group bands, Big Star and Badfinger and had performed together................Badfinger had the radio success, that was the difference, despite what happened to them. Big Star got bumped by The Doobie Brothers........
beautiful
I love Chris Bell and this song is adorable, innocent and brilliant. Its like a "sister" song to "Thirteen". Everytime I hear it I cant help feeling a bit sad that he lived such a short time, but he created some timeless music that will go on forever. Ditto Alex, miss you......
Julie Dodgshon Like Chris, there are probably thousands of incredible undiscovered songwriters, musicians, filmmakers, painters, poets and novelists waiting tables, barkeeping and fry cooking at your local greasy spoons and corner bars as I write this. Chris Bell was working at his family's restaurant the night he died in a car wreck. Instead of touring and working in the studio and writing he was clearing and setting up tables. Why? Why wasn't he making music all the time? He should have been. I wish he was.
wildmercuryfilms he probably WAS making music all the time & couldn't afford to do anything about it..
indeed Greg.
@Greg Clark starving artist syndrome
If a broken heart had a voice that is what it would sound like....
+Ross T Perfect
Perfect description. 👍 I'm gonna guess Luke is from the UK. Badfinger was amazing. So was Big Star. They were around at the same time, ok? It's just that bf ended tragically and quickly while Alex & Jody from BS continued for years.
couldn't have said it better myself
On March 31, 1974, The Garage (Performance Center) Cambridge, Massachusetts Big Star opened for Badfinger. Could you imagine being there? Although Andy had already quit by that point I wish I was there.
Ross T - Well said
Good on you Chris. You created what is probably the most beautiful song in the history of men singing while plucking stringy things. Having Alex Chilton on backing vocals is an embarrassment of riches.
amazing.
Sin duda alguna, uno de los mejores temas que he escuchado en toda mi vida! RIP Chris!
@ronoman88 I know it's an old comment but "Major 7th" and "Major 5th" makes no sense. Yes, it's Beatles influenced, but your explanation is off. Major 7th chords are extremely common and there really isn't such thing as a "Major 5th" chords. You might mean power chords, which again everyone uses in rock.
Major Sevenths do make sense however because the seventh degree of a scale can be put into a minor, dominant, and diminished context based upon which mode you are using. Fifths are more of a neutral scale degree but can still be dropped a halfstep or raised a halfstep for diminished or augmented chords though there's no exact phrase of "major fifth" there is a major seventh.
Yeah, like I said, there is nothing unusual or special about Major Seventh chords.
This song cheered me up and I went outside & looked up & a seagull shit on my face
The cosmos shit on your face.
beautiful
I laughed a little too hard at this. Are you sure you aren't thinking of his other song "Look Up"?
the violin sounds like heroin
interesting how on his demos for this song, he sings "love you everyday", and on this one, he sings "plans fail everyday". adds even more to the feeling of heartbreak you get from this song
Devastating
they say my love 4 u aint real .
so i can HOLD you ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,m
the acoustic's hear are verry buiteful
awesome!
yes he was great but all these guys died at age 27
Forgot Bonzo ;)
he's in an elite club with Kurt, Janice, Jim, Jimi , D Boon and Amy Winehouse, best band ever
Chris Bell died in such sad circumstances.
Man I hadn't heard this in a bit. Genius. What a great song!!!!
what a great rock n roll voice he had
the one person who disliked this is satan himself.
SpaceOdyssee0 All the songs he recorded for I am the cosmos, were recorded between 1974-75. Just to let you know. That's what the info in the Deluxe-edition I have said.
@galateasca It's back up again...I hope it stays...
I still think his best is "Look Up", which isn't anywhere on YouTube.
Who the fuck is Nick and Norah?
Now that is what I call a single right there...Brilliant.
@CapnCanard you can say bastard on here...it's not really a curse word. Not anymore. It's in the dictionary.
My favorite song (of thousands). Thanks.
Is Alex Chilton singing backup? Man, those guys sounded so f-ing good together! Anything stemming from Big Star should be in everyone's music collection. I hear their influence in music everyday.
