Big Star - September Gurls Lyrics

September girls do so much
I was your butch and you were touched
I loved you, well, nevermind
I've been crying all the time

December boys got it bad
December boys got it bad

September girls, I don't know why
How can I deny what's inside?
Even though I'll keep away
They will love all our days

December boys got it bad
December boys got it bad

When I get to bed late at night
That's the time she makes things right
Ooh, when she makes love to me

September girls do so much
I was your butch and you were touched
I loved you, well, nevermind
I've been crying all the time

December boys got it bad
December boys got it bad
December boys got it bad, ooh

  1. t.... ....

    fuck yes, that's great!

  2. L.... ....

If you like big star.. check out a little known Melbourne based Aussie band called Even.. good value

  3. P.... S....

first heard this from the bangles and micki steele did great

  4. m.... e....

Some of the happiest three minutes of my life.

  5. M.... P....

Just from this song I can hear lots of other bands that didn't come around until much, much later. A British new wave band called The Records, from what I can hear here, owes a huge debt to Big Star. This is a great compliment.

  6. F.... T....

    Chris Bell

    F.... T....

Flapjack Texas He left before this album

  7. p.... r....

    Great American band

  8. K.... A....

    The guitars, how perfect.

    K.... A....

    Kyky Ahonen So Underrated

  9. s.... ....

Jody Stephens with an Afghan Whigs T Shirt at 0.34. Yeah!

  10. M.... S....

    Happy September.

  11. a.... ....

My music friends all rave about this band. They're okay, but they're not remarkable in any way close to the amount of praise they get. These songs are simple and pleasant, but they are only skin deep. They do not penetrate the soul. I never reach for them.

  12. T.... S....

    Great song

  13. K.... B....

Alex from the Boxtops...!!! The Letter.

  14. m.... e....

    Masterpiece

    m.... e....

    Perfection, even.

  15. F.... F....

Sounds like The Shins were influenced by these guys...

  16. G.... S....

Most underrated American of all time. Crap management and record company never promoted ant of there records. Its a crime.

  17. I.... D....

I always thought it was a girl song (to be sung by a girl).

    I.... D....

Not if you actually read the lyrics

    I.... D....

It was because I first heard the song with the bangles and it fitted the bassist's voice in such a way that it sounded very soft. In this original recording, one can hear it's raw and related to a sweetheart.

  18. R.... R....

I prefer this to the Bangles version

    R.... R....

    Ronald Raygun Absolutely

  19. G.... F....

There are only few hours I discovered this band. They're are awesome. Pretty melodies in their songs. 🇧🇷.

  20. C.... A....

    I’m here in 2019...

  21. K.... A....

gtr sounds don,t get any better, pretty close to The Byrds

  22. G.... S....

Big Star was the most overlooked band of the 1970s due to poor management and record company. They never got the exposure nor breaks that bands of same period who couldn't even fucking play. Very sad.

  23. I.... ....

Half these views during these last 3 days were unapologetically mine .

  24. t.... ....

    The Bangles brought me here.

  25. j.... f....

As a teen, one never expects transcendence. But there it is...o000hhh...

  26. J.... K....

Anyone know abt Alex chiltins guitar rig/tone for this track?

  27. i.... a....

Check out September Gurls by Squire...really, really good...not like the version by the bangles...they slaughtered it...

    i.... a....

    That's a good version

  28. r.... m....

Like Moby Grape, Arthur Lee and Love, and The Gettysburg Address before them, Big Star was just too damn awesome for even the highest common denominator ears, minds, hearts and souls of those times to embrace and make a place for. Wicked, disturbing bad luck.

  29. S.... G....

This is the greatest song ever written. It makes Dylan look like the joke that he is. The Beatles wished they could write something this magical. Day In The Life? GARBAGE. And Your Bird? GARBAGE. Let It Be? GARBAGE. Lennon himself in Rolling Stone said that this is the greatest song ever written. So did McCartney. So did Dylan. Same with Brian Wilson, whose opinion is meaningless.

  30. B.... V....

I only knew of the Bangles version which is great

    B.... V....

Check out Squire's version from '84. I thought Bangles' was good too. Even though it'll get a massive 'thumbs down', I still prefer the Squire version (recently reissued, by the way) above ALL others....

  31. P.... M....

This is in the rollingstone's top 500 songs of all time...

    P.... M....

    Rightfully so.

  32. y.... ....

Just seen a Documentary on the TV yesterday for this Band. Man they had it going on, glad I NOW know of them.

  33. D.... D....

    Virgo in spiel

  34. J.... L....

I can hear Matthew Sweet in this (of course, a ton of others too)

  35. i.... l....

    what do the lyrics mean

  36. p.... r....

    great song

  37. J.... R....

alex' best and signature song. got drunk w/ him in the village gate in '77. we didn't talk about music but rather Dostoevsky, like many indie rock songwriters a big reader.

  38. L.... H....

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cTt2aYNSsE0

  39. B.... D....

Best ever rock band, raw, and polished at the same time, the Rickenbacker is sublime.

  40. e.... c....

    this is the bangles

  41. G.... V....

    ¡Son geniales!

  42. C.... C....

Where are all my September gurls? I’m one! ❤️

    C.... C....

    I'm here a year later 😂

  43. D.... F....

    I miss them...they were brilliant

  44. O.... F....

Likely an influence on Pollard and GBV

  45. b.... p....

Why do feel the need to glorify one act, by degrading another?

  46. T.... H....

WWCD columbus just played this song and I had to hear it again!!!!! I wish I had heard it before now!!

  47. G.... S....

Great band, horrible record label and management.

  48. T.... ....

The unstable video is irritating for the eyes. Thumbs down.

  49. v.... ....

    Catchiest song in history!

  50. u.... ....

THE EAGLES?!?!?! You must be talking about eagles flying around in the sky cause you sure as shit ain't talking about that California band that pandered to soft rock housewives in Los Angeles & Marin County in the early '70's. It's apples and oranges brother.

  51. J.... V....

I like The Searchers' 1985 power pop take on this.

  52. R.... A....

For my money is the greatest Power Pop song if all time...the melancholy in Chilton's voice and the Byrdesque jangle of the guitars is unique. How this song is not among the top 20 songs of the rock era is a mistery to me. Plus I really appreciate the nod to the Beatles Nowhere Man here.

    R.... A....

The ringing rhythm guitar is similar to Lennon's guitar in And You Bird Can Sing.

  53. D.... F....

I heard this song having no idea of who wrote it or when. To me it sounded like a well written song created in the last 10 years. Now that I know better...

  54. c.... ....

As bright and trebley as it is; it feels like it should start to feel shrill and overdone eventually - but it never does.

  55. D.... ....

That solo is actually extremely good

  56. P.... ....

    Chris and Alex

  57. a.... ....

Who’s here because of Elliott? Also these guys should’ve been inducted already!

  58. B.... W....

    rock on

  59. F.... A....

It reminds me "Rain" and "She Said, She Said", by The Beatles.

  60. p.... ....

'People by the millions wait for Alex Chilton, when he comes round. They sing, "I'm in love. What's that song? I'm in love with that song." '

  61. D.... ....

Amazing song! It's #22 on my 500 Greatest Songs of All Time
    https://rateyourmusic.com/list/AlRog/the-500-greatest-songs-of-all-time_according-to-this-guy/

  69. e.... ....

Loved the time I grew up in....the music is unparalleled for any other time for pop music.

  70. p.... t....

RIP Alex Chilton and Chris Bell.

  71. 1.... ....

This is REM before REM. The 90's sound was conceived in the 70's

  72. X.... M....

Even Train was influenced by these guys.

  73. N.... ....

Oh well....guess the Bangles were kinda cute

  74. S.... D....

they never sold out arenas in 1974...they were just there in the background seeping into the very bedrock of what would become alternative- when alternative meant something, an alternative to aerosmith poison bon jovi should i go on with the shit bands that were shoved down the maw of fm radio--. those of us who grasped and hung on every word paul westerberg had to say...alec chilton was a big star--some knew already--there were others that followed paul's bread crumbs and went to find them--there was no internet, everything was by word of mouth....i remember listening to '13' and thinking there never was a more beautiful song writtben...

  75. C.... H....

the American Badfinger? or grittier Raspberries? should have at least had their moment like they did

  76. C.... H....

precursor for Tom Petty & REM, Replacment etc..

  77. k.... d....

Stop with the equivocations! DIG IT.

  78. M.... O....

What a bullshit "oldy". Im suprised they didn't wear sequin jumpsuits for this " number".

  79. M.... ....

So "gurls" isn't an invention of the 10's? (I mean the 2010s)

  80. T.... H....

No matter the month, I've always enough time to enjoy this.

  81. G.... X....

Saw Alex somewhere in the early 90s at Glasgow Tech. One of the best nights of my life.

  82. d.... ....

Forgot to say RIP Alex Chilton and Chris Bell.

    d.... ....

And thank the drummer and bass players , family and friends for sticking around . And Blaze Foley ,fer some reason ...

  83. d.... ....

How is possible for 1 person to dislike this, let alone 60!!

  84. T.... M....

new fan of big star...old fan of the box tops..

  85. G.... S....

This song is SO infectious. It's pop song writing at its most brilliantly economical.

  86. r.... ....

My love of Big Star brought me here. Thx edumota.

  87. J.... S....

Drew Monson brought me here and I think I found a new favorite song.

    J.... S....

Just Jessie the Bangles did not bring me here

  88. A.... B....

Teenage Fanclub wouldn't exist if there were no Big Star before.

    A.... B....

teenage fanclub wouldn't exist if there were no guitars before.

    A.... B....

    Especially this song

    A.... B....

Teenage Fanclub is an extraordinary band... but what you say is totally true

    A.... B....

Alternative rock wouldn't exist if there were no Big Star.

    A.... B....

@Jackjude Guided by Voices has to be my favorite band

  89. J.... S....

    Thanks Drew

  90. J.... C....

    Sensacional a banda!!!

    J.... C....

    muy bien

  91. E.... K....

    the 'mats brought me here

  92. R.... B....

If you listen closesly this song is ahead of it's time...it would have been right at home in the early 80's soft rock.

  93. s.... h....

the most underated song ever ,  a true classic , a desert island disc for me.

    s.... h....

Check brit 60s group The Action. Many under-rated songs and album "Rolled Gold" cancelled by the record company. Awesome, and in the same league.

  94. R.... L....

    glad i shook something,fuck

  95. J.... F....

1st time I ever heard this song played other than the Bangles. This is very good, but Michael from the Bangles sings it real close to perfect.

    J.... F....

    The Bangles did a cover.

    J.... F....

@Jim Fusco Really? What a bizarre comment. This is the ORIGINAL! Get it?

  96. R.... M....

Great band - lets keep them secret - don't want the hoi poloi into them

    R.... M....

lol I'm afraid the secret was out long ago and you know it

    R.... M....

Yes - only joking - wish id seen them love I Am The Cosmos album by Chris too
