Big Star - Nightime Lyrics
At nightime I go out and see the people
Air goes cool and hurrying on my way
And dressing so sweet, all the people to see
They're looking at me, all the people to see.
You look like a kitty
And when you're in the moon
Oh you look so pretty
Caught a glance in your eyes
And fell through the skies
Glance in your eyes
And fell through the skies
I'm walking down the freezing street
You said get them away
Please don't say a word
Get me out of here
Get me out of here
I hate it here
Get me out of here
At nightime I go out and see the people
Air goes cool and hurrying on my way
Glanced in your eyes and fell through the skies
Dance in your eyes and fell through the skies

Big Star Nightime Comments
Probably the greatest song about feeling melancholy
Bandwagonesque's creators were listening ;) #December
Like Robyn Hitchcock says - Big Star were like a letter that got lost in the mail and arrived in '84-'85.
The promise of this...
God the all were great in this band ,Their story is so true, raw but so honest, I have been in this business from eight years old, I remember being a young girl coming home from working a Broadway stage and making sure to always pass Cb Gb’s on my way home even studio 54 it was my excuse to see amazing uniq talented people,(even Andy walking with a phone in his hand most of the time stage but talented as well) Big Star’s lyrics are extremely true we all have wanted to say these thing’s Peace Love Zen
#edumota AND YES ### THANKS FOR ALL, ALEX ########
(1950-2010)
Zen JDM, you speak of "Andy" but he left Big Star in '73. Did you mean Andy Hummel or some other Andy?
Love this song, album, Alex Chilton, Big Star, Chris Bell. This is the fucking song, the end of this album is insane.
Greg Dulli sent me here
This song helped me through a pretty tough few months in my life. Thank you, Alex.

How I feel in school
love big star..also have a go at chris bell's i am the cosmos. Unique melodies and feeling i only get with Big star.
warm..human..frail and emotive. Hard things to get across for most bands. Genius
It's so hard to Write a simple song....
Great Music
I can't stand the downbeat third album. Much prefer the other two albums
Give it more listens. It has a lot of joy in it. A lot of pain, but joy, too.
Master Debater it kind of sounds in between Syd Barrett and George Harrison.
All of them are good, someday you will know.
While I first discovered Big Star through their first two excellent albums, I've always thought this was their coup de gras.
Master Debater incorrect
Elliott Smith did a killer cover of this
killer footage brah...
give big star 3 Minutes and then .
....... anther 3 scenes
+ron zloof Scones
+andrew moonbeam chocolate cake with hundreds and thousands
very very similar to September Gurls..
not really...
yes,in a lot of ways.you have a good ear
Elegant yet emotionally direct without resorting to maudlin manipulation."Glance in your eyes, and fell through the skies"is a couplet that better illustrates the state of love than any t.s. eliot poem.
A different state of a different love. I bet so many people do disagree. But I agree : )
Best eva!
Got a glance in your eyes and fell through the skies....
♫
Hated this 4 years ago. Love it now.
The big stars at nightime change everything after your eyes are lost.
Creeps like that. Third.
Memoriesof Midtown Memphis..this song says it all to my heart & soul. One of Big Stars's finest cuts
Thanks Alex - brilliant and truthful song. Love the line about the freezing street,
Big Star gets a writeup @ teapartytribune, (The Hidden Supernova of Music)
bloody awesome of course.
So sorry for you . . .
oh jesus, "this song is gay". ooh, gay must mean bad. fuck that silly shit.
WOULD YOU FUCKERS QUIT ARGUING ? holy frick dudes like it or dont, but why spend your time arguing with people who wont appreciate your oppinion ?
arguing about music is incredibly stupid. arguing on youtube about it is even stupider. if you don't like it keep your thoughts to yourself and go listen to something you like. no one cares about some strangers opinion. but hey, thats just my opinion.
If someone asked me what means 'beautiful' this song would describe it.
Practicamente un año escuchando "sister lovers" Una estrella gigante la de Alex Chilton. Magistral.
Great song. Cheesey video. Bummer.
One of those songs that takes a few listens before you realize how good it is. Very subtle. The production is magnificent.
Hola Que Tal ?
Al igual que practicamente la totalidad de las canciones del disco, maravillosa, perfecta.
children by the million
sing for Alex Chilton when he comes 'round
They sing
I'm in love What's that song?
I'm in love with that song
"Alex Chilton" by The Replacements
(that great song's on YouTube too)
And Paul Westerberg says this (Nighttime) is his favorite Alex song.
Genius. He was pure genius. 59 years is not enough time on this planet. The fact that I never got to see him live leaves a big, aching hole in my heart. Rest in peace, Alex.
used to play at the mudd club often when he was living in new york.loose, ragged sets
"Caught a glance in your eyes
And fell through the skies": if that isn't one of the sweetest thing verbally and musically someone can think up,then what is? Memphis's lost one of its most devoted kids.
RIP Alex Chilton! Thank you friend!
@TheEaglesfan1988:
If you're going to make comments like this you need a better user name man. The Eagles? Give us a break already!
@sugarbabydylan I was stunned & saddened by the news of Alex's death.
How do I send you a message?
Gorgeous & yearning. Journey well, Alex. You will be greatly missed.
RIP Alex Chilton, one of the most influential artists on not only my own music, but the music of countless artists I love. I can't imagine a world without his work, nor do I want to.
I first heard this song through an Elliott Smith cover version. and now Alex is gone too. a sad day.
this is the kind of song that makes my breath catch in my throat and a chill through my body.
Now that's funny.
RIP Alex... so sad.
Simple answer to your question:
Yes it is a song.
RIP, Alex Chilton.
@nazno enough material for five songs, jack. that's why it's not boring pablum.
RIP... i cant imagine a world without big star or the box tops for that matter
A wonderful tribute to an amazing songwriter and musician. He'll be missed.
This is music, but is it a song?
Achingly beautiful.
Lol, I'm a scientist actually.
I suppose History is linear, even if Time is nonlinear under certain conditions.
Well thank goodness I thought your next comment was going to quote from Isaiah and tell me there's a hot place waiting for me for mentioning science. Luckily, Big Star fans appear to be somewhat smarter and what a relief.
@billhicks8 I was just messing with you.
@mthai66 I was just messing with you
If you are persistent in wanting an answer from me then fine. A timeline is not the same as time. And even if that were the case time is not linear otherwise quantum physicists wouldn't be talking about the multi-dimensional string theory and perhaps be out of a job.
But to the point, you said 'most' music? okay. I still find that erroneous since Big Star was one little cult band. They pre-emptively understood sophisticated recording and pop-structure I guess. That's big enough for me...
This is why I said "*much* of the musical progress". They sound like they are from the future because the future was made to sound like them.
excellent job on the video
That is quite a statement to make, even about Big Star. However, I don't perceive the timeline of music to be so linear as to agree. There have been some incredibly innovative bands that sound nothing like Big Star and have nothing to do with them or their line of influence, I would consider this apparent and obvious.
@RHutton2710 I am saying that much of the musical progress of the last 25 or so years is actually redundant with what Big Star did in the early 70's, and if the band had been well know at the time *this redundancy would have been seen as obvious*.
Them and everybody else. After you hear Big Star you realize the last 25-30 years is completely moot.
Brings me to tears
Glad to discover Big Star--nice tie-in to the Box Tops' story!
Elliott actually covered this song pretty good.
You need to experience albums by them, If you looking for easy stuff you have to get the #1 Record/Radio City double. If you like far out shtick you need to own Sister Lovers.
Other way around
Wow, his voice sounds a bit like Elliott smith... nice band
Yeah...youtube videos arent going to cut it.
I suggest buying "Radio City," my favorite record of all time.
RIP Chris Bell
Although to be fair, anybody that knows music has been giving them props for years,Primal Scream,Posies,R.E.M! Of course I'm sure Alex would rather have the financial rewards...
Big Stars' music is really awesome.
ビグスターの音楽はとてもそごいねぇ。
This is a wondeful song...what an atmosphere..so warm despite the freezing streets it describes.Big Star were ahead of their times that's why they are acknowledged now.
I satrt lisening Big Star after I see the last episode of House in which they play I'm in love with a girl and now I'm adicted to Big Star music. This song is really good. love it.
"Melancolia profunda". That captures it nicely.
i love big star
One of my favorite songs ever was.
cap'n
Gorgeous.
Yes, and I'm from Brazil...
Grazie per il testo.
Thanks for the lyrics.
Grande Alessio Chilton.
