For a band that wasnt Christian (but whose lead singer was) they managed to write one of the best Christian, let alone Christmas, songs ever.

Not true, it's absolutely in earnest. In other Big Star songs like The Ballad of El Goodo Alex shows his faith in God, though it may or may not be in the strict Christian sense.

@tiny creature I agree it's not anti-Christmas but I don't think you call a Christmas song 'Jesus Christ' without being aware of some of the tensions in that term. I sort of think of it as an expression of simple belief with a nostalgia for being able to have simple beliefs, kind of like the way 'Thirteen' is about being a thirteen year old but also about no longer being a thirteen year old.

@Fintan Ryan I like how you put that, but I still don't see it as a skeptic's song considering El Goodo and the fact he declares that "the wrong shall fail, and the right prevail." I do think he felt that he could get away with something so presumably "uncool" as an earnest Jesus song because the skeptics would see it the way they wanted. I was even surprised to hear this again so many years later and feel so certain that the song was meant earnestly.
