Big Country - Tall Ships Go Lyrics

I dreamed I heard that you were dead
I dreamed I searched an empty bed
For a sign of you
And the sea called hard to me
Like a cell without a key
And I felt the distance
I watched the tall ships go
With the drift wood on the flow
With pride that grows in hardship
And I knew you were below

I hear your voice
And it keeps me from sleeping
Why must it always be dreams
When your voice comes to me

I dreamed you felt the typhoon spit
And walked into the heart of it
While the sea gulls cry
I know how to feel that call
It never suited me at all
But some are born to it
And you seemed so bright and hard
Like a bloody edge of sword
But if you’re an enemy
Then you look a lot like me

I hear your voice
And it keeps me from sleeping
Why must it always be dreams
When your voice comes to me

I dreamed you sailed me to the swamp
In a black boat
You spoke to me of things
Of the shame that years will bring
And I felt your hand shake
Though you always seemed so hard
Now I never see the sword
And I find the enemy
Has to feel the same as me

I hear your voice
And it keeps me from sleeping
Why must it always be dreams
When your voice comes to me

  12. P.... H....

A bygone era of great bands. I saw them at Nottingham Rock city in 1986. Fantastic.

An acoustically Brilliant Masterpiece with some great footage of the Great Big Country... Love this song... Unfortunately, no LIVE version of this song done when Stuart was alive wouldn't this be something to see them perform Live.. Incredible.. His Guitar can bring out emotions like no other.... ###FACT...

"I know how to feel that call but it never suited me at all" - lot of soldiering references in Big Country's first three albums, with the British working class being expected to join the army or navy and all. Remembrance Day/Red Fox tis more, in a sense, but they don't sound very British. Sound waves from Ireland.

    O.... M....

    Owen McGee they were Scottish

    O.... M....

@Rob McGrory Not quite. Mark and Tony from London, Mark of Polish heritage, Tony of African. Stuart (born in Manchester) and Bruce (born in Canada) from Fife.

    O.... M....

@Jon Coktoastin yes, my (partial) mistake. Bruce and Stuart did move to Scotland very young, however. Either way, the music is brilliant.

    O.... M....

yes, but the music/vibe of The Seer album sounds more Irish to me. The e-bows sound closer to uileann pipes than bagpipes on that album. But that's just my impression. Bodhrans on the title track etc., little things like that.... lyrics too. not so militant.

    O.... M....

"the longest day" was recorded in Dublin, but I'm not sure about other BC tracks

  15. O.... M....

"I hear your voice and it keeps me from sleeping...why must it always be dreams when your voice comes to me?" He was speaking through Stuart...sometimes

  16. G.... M....

Steeltown. Fantastic album? Should of sold more copies than the crossing?

  17. e.... ....

This song is a sonic assault! The band throws everything at you with this track.

  18. J.... P....

    Great vid; thank you.
Some days will stay a thousand years!
Some pass like the flash of a spark.
Who knows were all our days go!!!
    RIP Stuart.
