Big Country - Sailor Lyrics

What would you be if the waves set you free
And the wind in your hair brought you sailing to me
Tied up on the shore would you weary no more?
When will it be, when will it be

What would I be if a hurricane came
Would I be clever, would I be shamed
Would I lie helpless, cast up on the flames
What will I be, what will I be

I will be here forever
Till the river runs into the sea
I will always be silent
And hold my head up
And we will be sailors no more

Where would we go
To the sand or the snow
Wander in memories or let them all go
Would we be dreamers, helplessly so
Where would we go, where would we go

I will be here forever
Till the river runs into the sea
I will always be silent
And hold my head up
Till we will be sailors no more

Let's run right out of the city tonight
With our hair tied up and lips sealed tight
I will cry no more, I said I will cry no more

Like an empty tourist at the world fair
I could only stand and stare
And let it pass by me, let it pass me by

I never should have said out loud
That I wanted to save the world
But I let it slip away, I just let it slip away

The only thing I wanted to be
Was the perfect one who killed for free
And I will try no more, I say I will try no more

But now we are together we won't turn back
Where the boats are burned and the ties are black
And I will cry no more, I will cry no more

Yeah, you remember? Thanks for no courtesy. No manners, fucking ignorant brainwashed people.

It was 1993 and I had a flag of Scotland fed x overnight and all I got was an ok. So, great music, but fuck him. Egotistical asshole. Thee entire lot. And I am English.

  5. D.... G....

I met him in Mississippi, and was not impressed. Not by his handlers anyways.

One of my all time favourite Big Country songs and that's saying something, they wrote so many awesome tracks! Thanks lads for all the joy you've given.

  11. C.... T....

Yes, amazing. Talent that is timeless.

  12. S.... M....

The only thing wrong with this otherwise perfect song is that it ended when it was just getting going. This is one song that just begged for a long guitar solo to finish it off.

  13. S.... M....

God this band is SO underappreciated. Their first 3 albums were absolutely brilliant, and everything after that was great.

    S.... M....

    So true

Great lyrics in this song. Stuart was a poet and very much underrated. Compare and contrast with the lyrics of today's music and there's no competition -- Big Country win every time.

The Seer was Stuart's finest hour IMO, and the best BC album ever released. I have some favourite songs off other BC albums, but no other album of theirs produced so many quality tunes.

I waver on "Eiledon" or "Sailor" as the best tracks on The Seer. Regardless....two of BC's finest ever....
