Big Country - Porrohman Lyrics

Night hangs on the city
Like a blanket on a cage
A sacrifice prepared

Laughter lies on faces
Where the sun has never shone
The fear of life is strong

We are waiting in a forest
Deep and dark behind the wall
What is hidden in our hearts

Absolves us of all worry
When our fate is in the hands
Of a demon or a god

Porrohman come from the inside of time
Takes his dust from a moving line
On our knees with our eyes on the ground
Those once lost have now been found

Give us iron give us rope
Give us iron give us rope

Save us from all worldly pain
Save us from the glowing rain
Save us from all love and hope
Give us iron give us rope

Give us iron give us rope
Give us iron give us rope

    2:50 fucking brilliant

  8. k.... ....

Still, by far, one of the best rock albums to ever come out. I remember buying this because Rolling Stone gave it a raving 5-star review, which was kinda rare.

  10. G.... B....

Thank the universe for Big Country <3

  11. A.... ....

I get goosebumbs listening to this....1983 fuck me where did time go, remember this like yesterday, doing me "o" levels. Great innocent times of youth.

  12. O.... M....

...who writes a song like this? Tis pure SA to my ears, especially lyrically. "On the brink" visions. Though I suspect "the sound (vocal melody/idea)" was partly a response to the Cure/Joy Division trend of some British bands at the time (only very much better in its results). There was a promo shot once of SA and "Mr. Curehead" together, in a Scottish and English football jersey respectively, jumping for the same ball, but they were/are worlds apart...

  13. s.... h....

Very underestimated band.....Love this band for a long time.

  14. s.... n....

This amazing track has still to be beaten by anybody who thinks they are musicians ......

  15. G.... Y....

    Inflamable Material as well.

  48. N.... E....

I'm looking forward to seeing these guys for the first time in over 30 years on 13/9/18 - sadly without the maestro - Mr Adamson!!! - thirty five years since the release of 'The Crossing' and we have seen nothing better than this since!!

  49. P.... B....

"The Crossing" was an astonishing thing. Some of the most uniquely powerful music I've ever heard, and more haunting and empathic than almost anything done at the time. "Give us iron...give us rope...".
I really regret the short lifespan of the band....

    P.... B....

@Ian Jackson Thank you-- I stand corrected.

    P.... B....

@Pilfer Bean no problem. Accuracy and all that.......not quite the same with current line up, but it keeps the music alive, so all good 👍

    P.... B....

    @Ian Jackson Yup.

    P.... B....

Their lifespan did seem short though, as they were not quite the same after The Seer. They started to sound like a country and western band and lost their way. To me Big Country had three great albums but they contained some of the best music I've ever heard. It's a tragic shame what happened to Stuart. What a talent!

    P.... B....

@Utah Raptor True enough. Stuart's desperation for Stateside fame caused him to kill everything unique and credible about the band. Instead he reached for old, tired American cliches, even to the extent of bringing bland blues-based lead guitar into the band that had famously rejected boring blues-style guitar for those first 3 glorious albums.

  50. D.... D....

    Once upon a time
i heard the song In A Big Country on radio and i was blown away
so i bought the album The Crossing
and this song completely owned me

    D.... D....

I totally wore that worthless Polygram cassette tape out! Thank god for digital! Yeah, listened to this tape again and again. Never went to see them in Hawaii, where he ultimately hung himself... but I did see The Fixx at the same run-down bar until it was demolished...

  55. A.... U....

    Fantastic music ethereal then heavy

    A.... U....

If you like this, try Dire Straits.... Telegraph Road.
Studio version only, mind. Live doesn't do it justice.

  58. t.... ....

    Unbelievable

  59. p.... w....

Gives goose bumps every time. A soundtrack of awesomeness, a tapestry woven by 4 of the best musicians of the 80's. Marks drumming again a force to be reckoned with. The reason I brought a drum kit and wanted to play. Sheer Class!!

    p.... w....

paul wilkins fellow drummer here, yeah he wasn’t half bad was he.

    p.... w....

A tight and powerful rhythm section with original and emotional guitars. Great story telling vocals that scream young Scottish lad across the mountainside.

  60. t.... d....

Raw, emotional. Songs come and go. Bands come and go. BC, this song will go on forever RIP Stuart

    C.... C....

    don't forget SM debut.

  82. R.... N....

Very original sound, I like it!...

    R.... N....

Sean Mitchell Thanks a bunch for sharing this awsome band! :D. kisses

    R.... N....

Raquel Navarro Me too, they were amazing. Needless to say that they're my favourite band

  83. S.... M....

This song is almost perfect; I can listen to it again and again, unlike some other songs that I like. Then at minute 4:50 the typical BC thing comes in. It's almost as if they lacked confidence and felt that leaving it as it was would have been too dark for the general public. Wish they could have just left it there, in it's pristine perfection.

    S.... M....

After listening to this tune several times, and having a new found appreciation for it, I concur with your point completely. Beyond 4:50 they should have really kept things as they were.

    S.... M....

nah, its an intentionally out of darkness kinda song. they weren't goths. they were confident. so it's right the way it is. wouldn't make sense otherwise. even lyrically. two cents. and not a song I particularly like anyway. impressive, though.

  84. S.... M....

    What does 'Porrphman' mean?

    S.... M....

Witch doctor. It appears to be from an H. G. Wells story, "Pollack and the Porroh Man".

    S.... M....

Many years ago, before I had internet to find out, I thought porrohman was some sort of legendary fish man in Scottish folklore Maybe because porroh is similar to piranha... or maybe not lmao

    S.... M....

Loved this album when it first came out and love it even more now !

  85. R.... M....

i listended this when i was younger. At this times these songs were wonderfull. today also

  86. S.... ....

...love the comments!!!...today's shit doesn't even come close to this gem of a jam session!!!...quite possibly my favorite BC tune ☺☺☺....

  87. j.... ....

From 2:41-4:29 is almost too much for a mind to comprehend that this is being done on a debut album. This song is the 1812 Overture of rock songs... epic and grand.

    j.... ....

    Spot on.

    j.... ....

I think its mainly due to the fact that these guys are all great musicians as well as having great songs. They were "guys with guitars" at a time when a lot of the music in the 80s was primarily keyboard-driven. Another great band who did new things with two guitars is Wire Train.

    j.... ....

    @Gareth Williams

    j.... ....

jamesdeansghost55 great way to describe this ... totally the 1812 overture! Nobody does this anymore

    j.... ....

@Nick Owchar So unique and brilliant was this particular sound, especially on this album. I once challenged people on the comments section to name me another artist or artists that could compare to them in terms of sounding similar...No one could. I challenged people to name an artist or artists, besides The Skids, where they could've gotten their influence from..Once again no one could. This is like trying to figure out where an original like Kate Bush got her sound from. I've never heard anyone else sound like Big Country, because if I had I'd be listening to them right now.

  88. H.... L....

    This is kick ass!

  89. E.... R....

man, so many shitty bands and musicians who could've killed themselves instead. why this guy?

    E.... R....

Sad to hear it. I don't know anything about this band. I just like this song.

    E.... R....

musicians are depressive by nature. My guess is when you go from being a star, to irrelevant, that must be incredibly painful.

    E.... R....

It's the creativity. A lot of very creative people have issues like depression, or are bipolar. If I recall correctly, he was actually on a up turn, career-wise, and that's when a lot of suicides happen. They've been really down before, and are now doing better. Being depressed, they assume that someday they MUST lose the gains (in outlook), and can't take falling back down.

    E.... R....

Because ... and I’m guessing ... Mommy and Daddy’s standards of ‘true success in life’ were much different than the true success they gave birth to. They wanted him to be a Lawyer or a Doctor or someone they could show off to their friends. Probably also told him to turn the radio down at night. I dunno...

  90. p.... r....

From a RUSH fan. This is truly an unbelievable piece of music !

    p.... r....

    Rush in peace .

    p.... r....

    I agree, groeten Pieter

    p.... r....

    Great drummer admirers think alike!

    p.... r....

I love Rush too. Big Country is so underated. After the big hit"In a Big Country" came out, they weren't on the radio much. Sure they had more hits. This is one of my favorite tapes. The guitar, singing, drums are phenomenal. I played this tape everyday and everywhere in the 80s. RIP Stuart Adams.
Thanks to MTV they were highly sucessfull band with the exposure they deserved.

    p.... r....

a few of their early pieces were fairly progressive in their own way: lots of different guitar sections; supreme musicianship; conceptual story telling through the music and the lyric. i wish they'd explored more down this avenue than gone chasing butterflies in America. ho hum.

  91. J.... P....

    What a brilliant song !!

    J.... P....

John Peel you r a legend

    J.... P....

It's not actually Peel, he died in 2004....

  92. c.... v....

this song gave the strength I needed

    c.... v....

good to hear people still look for good music.
