Big Country - Just A Shadow Lyrics

It went so well for you
With a place right where you wanted and the ones to fill it to
But some blows break the spell
That it hits you every day until you need to hit as well

It's just a shadow of the man you should be
Like a garden in the forest that the world will never see
You have no thought of answers only questions to be filled
And it feels like hell

It all seemed fine for you
Till the struggle of ambition turned in violence upon you
Sometimes a landslide comes
If you're hiding in that avalanche you need a place to run

It's just a shadow of the woman you should be
Like a garden in the forest that the world will never see
And you have no thought of answers only questions to be filled
And it feels like hell

I know there is no need for what's been done
I know there is enough for everyone
Frustration brings a heavy hand to bear
And there's never been a hand

Did we ever have it good
While we lived in Eldorado did we find the gold we should
If it really was the truth
Why are faces filled with anger that should only shine with youth

It's just a shadow of the people we should be
Like a garden in the forest that the world will never see
You have no thought of answers only questions to be filled
And it feels like hell

I know there is no need for what's been done
I know there is enough for everyone
Frustration brings a heavy hand to bear
And there never is a hand outside that cares
Still the promise comes of living fit for all
If we only get our back against the wall
I look at backs that pushed the wall for years
Scarred by many knives and too much fear

  8. Scot sims

This song poped in my head the very second it was announced that my country had rejected independence were just a shadow of the people we should be like a garden in the forest the world could never see

  9. Francis John Leonard

I added the song, uploaded the album in 2009?

  10. Mike Poitras

One of their best moments. By this time a lot of critics were shitting on them and I didn't think it was fair. The lp isn't great, but they were still trying and it's still a far better effort than a lot of shit that's around today.

  11. optizap

Sounds like a nest of fabricated problems with no step back into awareneness to see its all in head. Sad how people do that.

  12. Peter Castlehouse

    My fav bc song magical

  13. Mike Poitras

I have the STEELTOWN lp and this song is easily the best track. I rarely played the rest of the lp. I taped this track. Still have the tape. I've been around. Man!! I'm 57.

    Sheldon Tapp

I have the album as well. Im 52. Love every song. Were the rose is sown. Angle park . Tall ships go. Come back to me. You cant skip those.

    Sheldon Tapp

But i do agree. I believe it is the best track on the album. Hey it's Big Country the greatest rock band of all time. Percussion geniuses.

...if only you can see how many people miss you Big Man ... love forever ...

  16. Adrian Oddy

Had a nostalgic pang for this song lately. Sums up a helluva lot. Beautifully written. The man and band were class. Takes me away for a while. R.I.P. Stuart. So sad......

  24. Jackie Brown

God, I love this song. Those guitars are amazing. The ending is just phenomenal! R.I.P Stuart.

  25. Stephen Roche

This song makes me cry nearly every time how powerful is that.

    Marley Bu

    Me too. Like now....

  26. Egbert Jahn

Da gibt es nicht viel zu kommentieren. Schlichtweg ne geile Band mit einem charismatischen Sänger und betörend cooler Music. Wow!

  27. Marley Bu

    Man, that guitar...

  28. BigalB

When that guitar riff kicks in at 2.03 .... wow! I love guitar music, but I have to say this track has one of the best sounding sequences I've ever heard. Been listening to lots of BC songs recently, which I'd completely missed when they were released and it's obvious that Stuart Adamson was a very talented songwriter, as well as a damn good guitarist.

  29. Scott Nuest

    R.I.P Stuart Adamson

  35. 123prestolee

I was still at secondary school when I bought this album - oh, how the world has now become truly fucked.

    Ray Chadwick

I agree carefree times lots of brilliant bands at that time but these lads stood out and beyond every other band, still brilliant today Stuart Adamson was underrated then but his music speaks for itself and Bruce making guitar playing look like he came out the womb playing

  36. Adam Earl

Absolute brilliant song in my all time top 5 songs.. Rip Stuart, legend

    Ian Jackson

    Adam Earl Me too

    Paul Fletcher

    Where is that video???
    I cannot find it anywhere

  38. Christopher Murphy

Such a great song. It's hard for me to put my finger on what draws me to it. It's sort of melancholy but uplifting at the same time.

    IkeArt Films

I find a lot of Big Country's songs are like that, it's what draws me to them so much.

    rrr ddd

Christopher. That's exactly how I feel about this song. I currently have the Greatest hits on repeat in the car and I keep coming back to this one. I think its my new favourite.

My skin gets goose flesh each time I hear this, my best ever!

    seekah1

I was really let down with this album, didn't give me the giddy rush like the debut, oh well.

  52. Erik Rudolph

Im glad i didnt hear all their music in the 80s so it can be new to me now...new music now sucks too much to get into for the most part

  53. Antonio Cutino

  57. clayton mars

So many memories he has gone and so have my family

  58. Andrea Levrio

    they are simply great

  59. Alan Richardson

the outro solo is so filled with passion.

    Sean Mitchell

That outro just begs to have been continued. Bad choice producer or someone.

    Ralph Jackson

    So intense.

  60. Charles Bartley

This song goes deep. I really love it.

  61. gazoo940

I really wish Stewart could have heard his own words......

    burn4you

That isn't how it works unfortunately. Genius and madness walk hand-in-hand. Some really deep lyrics because he was really deep, but that is not always reconciled when you are in it.

  62. Andrew Page

A strange and beautiful song. Not sure what it's about, but stirs something deep within. I think songs of this caliber have always been a rarity, but particularly so now.

    kali gasm

To me, it's a lament for lives that go unfulfilled.

We all begin life with great potential but events can conspire against us, and in later life we get to look back at what could have been, whether it's a child driven to suicide by online bullying; a brilliant singer who never achieves fame and fortune due to lack of self-confidence or a genius inventor whose work was never recognized.

Here's Rocky Balboa with some words of wisdom.
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_J0Ahh3UxbM

    Sheldon Tapp

    It is about elderly abuse

    Sheldon Tapp

He explains that it is about elderly abuse before he sings it at one of the concerts

    LeavingIt Blank

Interesting, all these interpretations, and then what Adamson said. I always thought it was about a man who beat his wife because he's not happy with himself, and how it's breaking down both of them. "But some blows break the spell, That it hits you every day until you need to hit as well, It's just a shadow of the man you should be... If you're hiding in that avalanche you need a place to run, It's just a shadow of the woman you should be..."

    Ralph Jackson

@LeavingIt Blank I must admit I thought it was something like that having heard it on the radio back in the opening few weeks of 1985,but reading the lyrics and these threads sheds a different light on it.

  63. Sadowsky1965

Great song.... great end for a great work like Steeltown

    Dawn Kladerman

possibly their best....but so many to chose from!

    captaingish

That last verse where he breaks out into a crying vent and the exploding guitar outro...brings me to tears. With BC music, it’s actually the lyrics that take center stage and the music, though incredible as it is, is just a bonus - to get us to take notice and listen. The crossing was an incredible and fun album but it’s this album, Steeltown, that is their masterpiece.

    Maxc Moritz

    @captaingish
I loved them since I heard " the crossing" for the first time,- but it was Steeltown that was their peek, a true masterpiece, each song stands as a poem and tells you a story of its own..never to repeat again..

  64. Adrian Mcgath

Dont here music like this anymore)

    Alucard Drake

    Wild Nothing

    Sheldon Tapp

    Unfortunately we never will again.

  65. Alex Schonski

saw them in Toronto in 1983 it was awesome

  66. bigseer

    So good.

Stuart Adamson - In A Big Country

A ballard for the people... All walks of life.
