Big Country - In This Place Lyrics

All the years I worked in this place
The friends that I knew here, I loved every face
I loved the smoke the heat and the noise
But the profits too small for the black suited boys

Oh angel, it’s coming down stone by stone
It’s breaking up home by home
Take it away, take it away, take it

In this place I will lay my life down
In this place I will let you carry me
As I age so my learning grows
I still touch the vision
I still smell the rose in this place

All the years I lived in this place
The people we knew here, I loved every face
I love the parties, the funerals and fights
But a supermarket needs the land
And I have no rights

Oh angel, it’s coming down stone by stone
It’s breaking up home by home
Take it away, take it away, take it

In this place I will lay my life down
In this place I will let you carry me
As I age so my learning grows
I still touch the vision
I still smell the rose in this place

All the years I spent in this place
The children I raised here, I love every face
I love this country, the land of my birth
How much am I wanted, how much am I worth

Oh angel, it’s coming down stone by stone
It’s breaking up home by home
Take it away, take it away, take it

In this place I will lay my life down
In this place I will let you carry me
As I age so my learning grows
I still touch the vision
I still smell the rose

In this place I will lay my life down
In this place I will let you carry me
As I age so my learning grows
I still touch the vision
I still smell the rose in this place

Always I've said that Stuart's songwriting & singing were head & shoulders above everybody & that includes Lennon/McCartney,Jagger/Richards,Dylan,James Taylor,Carol King & his guitar playing was so massively underrated,it hurts a lot to think had he still been "in this place" we could have had hundreds more wonderful songs,Rest in Peace Stuart

Remind s me of when my grandparents had to move. For the old heads of the valley road.

Stuart' had a True Star Hitched to His Wagon ' Truly 'don't know if He was Real ' He reached into My Celtic American Soul' As though He were a Deity ' He is in My 58 Years of Music Listening ' Perhaps the Greatest Most Original Songwriter of All Time' Its just an Opinion 'My Opinion' but He Struck Chords Deep Within My Soul' and Seemed to Keep Me Teetering at Times Between the Dark and the Light within Me' He was a Painter of the Soul' He was a Friend to the Dark' A Mourner to the Heart' He was So Much More than Rock n Roll "i Mean Listen 'just Really Listen' "to this Day 'I Love His Music' and it is a Staple for the Anecdotes of My Life' God Bless Stuart and Thank You' for Reaching Me'

    Know what you mean.

Greg Campbell I concur with all you say, Stuart was head & shoulders above them all, better than Lennon McCartney Jagger Richards and Dylan, just a shame that so many people worldwide will never know what we do

    G.... C....

He was too good for the banality of rock music, and I think rock music's whore's abortion of an industry, in the end hugely disappointed him on a very deep level.  It wasn't a suitable enough medium for the incantations of his soul.

Incredible song writer lucky enough to see Big Country live what a talent Stuart Adamson was,

  5. j.... f....

  6. T.... H....

Understated yet says it all... Adamson was Lennon/McCartney-esque in his ability to evoke with minimal verbosity.

    T.... H....

Tom Hunter IMHO Stuart was better than Lennon/McCartney,Jagger/Richards all put together, even better than Dylan 👍👍👍

    T.... H....

Oh Jesus, come on that's a bit much.

  7. T.... ....

Forgot about this beautiful song. Songwriting genius. Thanks for posting Carl.

  8. R.... D....

This is a beutiful song. It is filled with such emotion and sadness-kind of like Stuart.

  9. E.... M....

Heard this song by accident by looking at a You tube vid about the BBC World Service leaving Bush House.  Weird...!! What a wonderful song though !!!

  10. T.... ....

never saw Deadwood but i am still in love w/ this song.
Rest in Peace Stewart Adamson, we will always love you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! X

@sinister066 - You can't go wrong. Deadwood was head and shoulders better than anything on TV in the last thrity years. It's a blessing and a curse it stopped at only three series. A blessing because it kept the story pure and fresh and a curse because it was so damn good and was suddently no more. Honestly, treat yourself to the DVD's, ignore the gratuitous swearing and violence and you'll see pure poetry! 'nuff gushing now :)

  15. s.... ....

never seen an episode of deadwood but if it can be accompanied by a big country track....i will have to look into this.

  16. t.... ....

@CarlBewley Hi Carl, another reason Stuart would have loved this show, I read in the safety net DVD liner notes that they did a radio interview in Deadwood back in 93 (I think), Bruce already talks like Al from what I can gather,

  17. D.... H....

always loved this song, still cuts deep after all these years.Thank you Stuart, you had the measure of my soul. Thanks Carl for posting.

  18. U.... ....

that was my song back in the day...
    rip Stuart

  19. A.... G....

    gorgeous!

"borgatano1" a truer word has never been spoken. I do think if Big Country had gotten to showcase their talents at "Live Aid" in '85 it would have been a different senario altogether. This was the big break for a lot of groups at the time. It transformed them into supergroups.Sadly the guysa missed this oppertunity.

  21. A.... C....

I love this song so much. It reminds me of when I was on strike in Aberdeen at the P&J -- 130 of us sacked because the owners cared only about profit. I'd only just arrived, but some of my colleagues had worked for decades there. We all got booted out, but they didn't break us.

  22. P.... ....

    Magnifique...PASCAL

  23. b.... ....

    Great song.... i'm crying..

  24. E.... K....

Aw, Deadwood. How I miss you.

  25. K.... ....

I've never seen Deadwood, but I like the pics with the song. I think this song must have been written out of sadness and love rather than anger. It makes it's point much better than a rant would have. Very poinnant.

    Thanks again, Carl.

  26. C.... B....

    Glad you liked it!

I've done a fe wBC vids now but this one I didnt think would work for most people as I was indulging my Deadwood passion. I love that show. Think I'll put up season two so look out for that.

And yep, always up for a beer!

  27. t.... ....

Never thought I would find someone who also liked my two favourite things, Deadwood and Big Country. You sir are a person of impeccable taste.I have every season of DW on DVD. We really must have a beer sometime."it's only wild bill Hickock you got stalled here in the muck....ya ingnorant F*&^%in C*&^ts" poetry, not other way to describe it. Stuart would have loved this show.
