Big Country - Fragile Thing Lyrics

Thank you ma'am for asking
Yes I'm on my own
I guess it's kind of obvious
I'm eating here alone

I'm grateful for the company
Tired of talking to myself
Don't you look into my eyes
You might see someone else

I've been to see a movie
About a man who saved the world
Had the same old happy ending
Where the hero gets the girl

And all I ever wanted
Was to be that hero too
Then I might still be with her
Instead of here with you
Love is a small and fragile thing
I spend a lot of cold nights missing you
Keep it in your hands or let it take wing
I spend a lot of cold nights missing you

Thank you for your time ma'am
I'm gonna go and walk
I might as well do that
Because I'm running out of talk

I could walk a thousand miles tonight
And never find my place
At least until it gets too light
To hide my tearful face

Love is a small and fragile thing
I spend a lot of cold nights missing you
Keep it in your hands or let it take wing
I spend a lot of cold nights missing you

I spend a lot of cold nights missing you

There's a low ballet on the highway
Brief faces in the light
I catch them for a second
Heading somewhere in the night

And we have no connection
But the darkness and the road
I better find a place tonight
I better call it home

Love is a small and fragile thing
I spend a lot of cold nights missing you
Keep it in your hands or let it take wing
I spend a lot of cold nights missing you

I spend a lot of cold nights missing you

Such a great song but sadly was probably about Stuart’s battle with his inner demons which I guess led to him taking his own life. I was lucky enough to see him perform with Big Country in 1988 and they were awesome. R.I.P

One of my favourite songs by BC, with lovely voice of Eddi Reader.

Miss you, love you, adore you, only wish I'd known you.  RIP Stuart  My father who was a lifelong musician unexpectly passed away just 2 months ago, 5 days after being diagnosed with bladder cancer so Stuart, if in the afterlife you meet my Dad you guys will have a lot in common to talk about & do some major jamming tunes.  Love you Dad & Stuart

  18. O.... M....

Many of Stuart Adamson's latter songs sound like they were inspired by his divorce, being separated from his wife and kids back in Scotland, while he was trying to reinvent himself in America. This one, 'too many ghosts' and 'shattered cross' especially. Turning to drink did him in. Driving to Damascus was his attempt to save the day.

  19. O.... M....

Stuart Adamson's latter days in America. And his last single. Eddi Reader's brother Frank wrote a gentle song called 'Got Carried Away' (2004) that features e-bow and it sounds like a tribute to my ears. No way of knowing for sure, though, because the Trashcan Sinatras are as private as church mice. May be a good idea, depending on which way the wind blows.

  20. B.... T....

I named my irish setter Big Country he passed away on Nov 2nd 2002

  21. l.... ....

Happy 60th birthday, Stu. :( Thank you for everything. Especially this song.

  22. b.... ....

Pretty song. Eddi Reader's brother is the lead singer for the Trashcan Sinatras. Big Country a great band. You should watch em play live in '86' with Inwards, the whole Crossing album, and the Seer, just awesome, watch Watson, Butler, And Stuart jig around while Mark rocks the kit.

  23. G.... M....

    Fantastic album

THIS is proof that Big Country were no fad. Perfection! Too bad it's not on Spotify

  30. T.... S....

  31. J.... m....

I just love this,Eddie and Stuart's voices knit well together. I also thing this track shows how BC music had matured over the years ❤ ❤

  32. P.... C....

Quite a different sound but I like it. I know Stuart moved to Nashville and this song reflects that. Very cool song.

  33. A.... W....

Only reaching 69 in the UK charts, this has to be one of the most underrated songs

  34. a.... ....

Like many of theirs it should have been a big hit but as usual the radio stations etc didn't promote it.

  35. R.... ....

    What a great Lovesong!

  36. d.... ....

Anybody know what album this version is from? The piano is toned down a slight bit and more of eddie reader's vocals compared to the "Drivin' to Damascus" version. This is one of my favourite BC songs from stuart's 'Nashville' period.

  43. L.... T....

I spend a lot of cold nights missing you... marvelous tune. RIP Stu

  44. N.... ....

So I just listened to this twice. This is my third listen: there is a verse missing here! I was singing along (can't help it, it's my favourite song in the world)

3rd (and best, IMHO) verse, is actually

"I've been to see a movie
About a man who saved the world
Had the same old happy ending
Where the hero gets the girl
    And all I ever wanted
Was to be that hero, too
And then I might still be with her
    Instead of here with you"

    N.... ....

Shows what happens when record companies go mad editing, where nothing can be longer than 4 minutes long!

  45. S.... G....

My older Brother followed BC from early 80's. He introduced me to a 12inch record called Fields of fire which he still has in his collection. I liked it but i wasnt a massive fan but i did love Stuart Adamson in the Dunfermline band the Skids. (into the valley) and many more great tunes. Shame he hurt so many people from his suicide. Selfish in my opinion. He had more in life than me and millions of other people but to take his own life. No respect for suicides (SORRY).

    S.... G....

+Simon Graham depression is an illness. Or do you hate cancer patients for dying?

    S.... G....

Difficult to understand until you've stood at the precipice. Forgive the man.

    S.... G....

I know this is an old comment but I can't help it ... I get where you come from with the "selfish" point - it must be incredibly hard for families and friends to know their father/son/nephew/uncle/friend has taken his own life. You call that selfish if you want ... but after all no one has got a say in what someone does with his own life (especially not fans and "millions of other people"). And depression is a dark fellow, very sinister indeed.
But, excuse me, what kind of reasoning is this: "he had more in life than me ..." - so? He obviously wasn't happy. If you and millions of other people would have been - fine. Does this oblige him to be too? No. You, we all know nothing about what was going through his mind, and for a sensitive soul like he seems to have been the world can be a bitter place. Who are you to judge?

When will people finally stop thinking one can help getting depressed and understand there's more to it than "stop whining and appreciate the special life you have bla bla"?
It's a shame he took his life. And by shame I mean there's no guilt on his side whatsoever: it's a shame he felt like having no future here and not being able to bear any longer. I feel sorry for *him*.

  49. r.... ....

That closing shot gives me chills every time. It's almost as if they knew what lay ahead. Great song and great video.

    r.... ....

The whole video is like that. When they drive by him while he's walking is just too...sad.

  50. D.... ....

wonderful! And this was the last album of them! Look what they did!

  51. M.... B....

    One of Stuart's best.

  52. c.... ....

Man, did they change their music and singing big time. Not sure if i like this. It isn't the early 80's sound of Big Country at all.

    c.... ....

No but that was the point with this particular song.
Big Country weren't all guns blazing all of the time, they had incredible diversity and musicianship in their catalogue.

  53. M.... M....

    rip  Stuart

  75. C.... J....

  85. C.... J....

Rock stations wouldn't touch it, and neither would country. But it belonged to both worlds.

  86. C.... J....

And music capitalism is, for the most part, criminal.

  87. j.... ....

Lines like that should've been a hint that Stu was crying for help. the world needs him now.

  88. j.... ....

one of the best singer/songwriters the world ever produced.

  89. l.... ....

at last someone who makes sense on youtube

  90. p.... ....

Stuart Adamson always has lyrics that have impact. In this song, the lyric "I could walk a 1000 miles tonight and never find my place...at least until it gets too light to hide my tearful face." This is powerful poetry folks. If I were an English teacher in high schoole or college, I'd make my students study this poetry over most the crap I had to study has a kid.

  91. M.... A....

You've never seen the new lineup live have you?
Stuart Adamson wasn't big country, they were all big country, and i say good for them for carrying on, keeping stuarts music alive. You're a bit ignorant sir.

    M.... A....

Military Arcade I've seen the new line up and Stuart is and always will be big country

  92. m.... k....

Love this band totally n Stuart 4ever....So much missed!!! xxx

  93. p.... ....

fragile your stomach after eating lauwrences cooking then your stomach is a fuckinx fragile thing xxx

  94. R.... G....

    Been singing this all day

  95. A.... ....

@n8tureboy Danm right, boy. But wait... they're our greatest, most loved & loudest played band, aren't they? So let all these mainstreamers head the wrong way. What counts> we got it right.

  96. C.... P....

@dondi2261 I dont think Mike Peters has done too badly helping to introduce Adamson's music to a whole new generation for a 'fat guy'... especially after all the shit he's been through... and fronting a band of his own...

  97. M.... ....

Eddie Reader has the best Scottish female vocal that I have EVER heard. She is another lost talent, she should have been more recognised than she is. Big Country ROCK!!!!

  98. d.... ....

That fat guy that "sings" for Big Country sucks ass. This band has gong from great to a below average cover band. What a shame.

  99. W.... C....

    R.I.P Stuart
