Biffy Clyro - Machines Lyrics

I would dig a thousand holes to lay next to you
I would dig a thousand more if I needed to
I look around the grave for an escape route of old routines
There doesn’t seem to be any other way

Cause I’ve started falling apart I’m not savouring life
I’ve forgotten how good it could be to feel alive

Crazy as it sounds you wont feel as low as you feel right now
At least that’s what I've been told by everyone
I whisper empty sounds in your ear and hope that you won’t let go
Take the pieces and build them skywards

Cause I've started falling apart I’m not savouring life
I've forgotten how good it could be to feel alive

I've started falling apart I'm not savouring life
Take the pieces and build them skywards
I've forgotten how good it could be to feel alive
Take the pieces and build them skywards

I've started falling apart I'm not savouring life
Take the pieces and build them skywards
I've forgotten how good it could be to feel alive
Take the pieces and build them skywards

I've started falling apart I'm not savouring life
Take the pieces and build them skywards
I've forgotten how good it could be to feel alive
Take the pieces and build them skywards

Take the pieces and build them skywards
Take the pieces and build them skywards
Take the pieces and build them up to the sky.

Cause I've started falling apart I'm not savoring life
I've forgotten how good it could be to feel alive

Crazy as it sounds, you won't feel as low as you feel right now
At least that's what I've been told by everyone
I whisper empty sounds in your ear and hope that you won't let go
Take the pieces and build them skywards

My 43 year old wife died from cancer two weeks ago. We both loved the Biff, saw them every time they came to Australia, and I played this song, Folding Stars and Mountains at her funeral last week. These lyrics just sum up exactly how I'm feeling, I'm utterly lost and devastated.

  3. sophiebertram

“Take the pieces and build them skywards” 🧩

  4. Wei Bhime

    intro: E,G,C,C,D,G,C,C
    Start singing:
here all instruments are coming :
    E,G,C,C,D,G,C,C x3

    you are welcome :)

  5. Liam H

Never heard this before recently... my cousin played it at his brothers funeral and I cant stop listening, crying and loving this tune...
    Pure quality... 100%er

  6. Daniel clough

I'm not the only one who noticed this is different to the track on the albums and that right? Like the drums are new and I think the piano too if I'm not mistaken

This song means a lot to me. Thanks for helping me, walking through the dark!

How do you like my accoustic version of this song:

  12. Natalie Poole

This was played at my best friend's funeral when we were still kids basically, he hung himself and his family wouldn't even let me go to the funeral because I stupidly didn't show up for him thay night. If I had known I would have.... Always show up for people. Been a long time anyway, but finally faced this song and that moment.

  13. Three Cheers

Machines - (Acoustic) Guitar / standard tuning (EADGBE):

    Intro: Em, G, C, C, D, G, C, C,

Verse 1: G, C, D, G, C ( the G and C kind of start quietly then build up, if you listen to the song just copy that and you’ll understand)

    Chorus: Em, G, C, C, D, G, C, C (same as intro)

(The bit in between is same as intro/ chorus)

    Verse 2: G, C, D, G, C

The I whisper empty sound in your ear bit is a bit different (the bridge I think):
    D, G, C, D, Em, G
(Em and G are just single strums)

    Chorus: Em, G, C, C, D, G, C, C X2

(This bit here / in between is the same as the intro/chorus as well)

Chorus: Em, G, C, D, G, C (C is strummed several times here, listen to the song and you’ll understand)

    Chorus: Em, G, C, D, G, C, C

    Outro: D, G, C, D, Em, G, C ( C strummed straight down once)

    Strumming Pattern is: >D, D, D / >D D D / D D
( hit the low E string on the Ds that has the > next to them)

Capo on 1st fret btw but it works just as well without

I hope this helped and I can’t remember what the bit in between is called I’m not sure if it’s the bridge or what but I tried my best to make it legible to people so you can understand it. I decided to do this because I read in the comments that this song means a lot to people and I think that being able to join in on a song you love and play along is amazing and makes you feel more connected if you know what I mean. Anyways, thanks for reading, these chords are more than likely not the proper chords but they still work just as well, they’re better on acoustic btw if you were wondering. If you need any help either listen to the song all the way through or just ask and I’ll try to help out. Thanks for your time and have a great day ❤️ :)

To my Scotsman... My Alexander.. We only met by chance. We lost contact, and I miss you terribly. My heart aches to talk with you again. Every time I listen to Biffy.. especially this song, I think of you. I miss you, and I hope we find out way back to each other. Love always, your American girl. xoxo Ash

  54. veronica betancur

    almost 7 years.. wow

  55. Alex Smith

My most favourite Biffy Clyro song ever!

    Alex Smith

This song speaks to me in a different sense than what the writer is implying. However, I can relate the lyrics of this song to what I see.

My relationship with myself has always been very hard to keep healthy, I always constantly put myself down for making mistakes and comparing myself with others, implying that I am worthless compared to them. I am my own worst enemy and always dwell on my imperfections and I feel hopeless for it.

But when the lyrics say 'I've started falling apart, I'm not savouring life', this hits the nail on the head for me. Because I'm always pitying myself, I have fallen apart and haven't been seeing the true beauty of life, and how good it feels to be alive.

On another note, I have liked this song ever since I heard it on the radio as a teenager in 2006/2007.

    Gracie kago

    U are so like me

    Alex Smith

It seems we have a few things in common :P

So what happens when it's 8 years on and I feel worse than I ever have before?

“If ever there is tomorrow when we're not together... there is something
you must always remember. You are braver than you believe, stronger
than you seem, and smarter than you think. But the most important thing
is, even if we're apart... I'll always be with you.”

    A.A. Milne

    Hannah Kenyon

  60. SFnH

My Mum is dying from cancer, and this song really crushes me. I have always loved it, but it now has a totally different feel to it. I am struggling so much to come to terms with what's happening.

SFnH I know it's a year on but I'm so sorry to hear. I really hope you're ok, you and your family.

    Alberto Nazario

SFnH I’m sorry to hear that. My mom has had 8 tumors in the past 2 years and for some reason she refuses to go under the knife. I’m terrified I might lose her every single day. Stay strong. Your mom needs to see the strength she’s passed on to you. It’s terrifying, but our parents need to at least remember they left some strength in us.

    albert albert

Sang this song to my wee grandad on his deathbed 😇so soothing.....Simon is god.

SFnH I know it’s 2 years on from your comment but any news on what’s happened? I hope you’re ok

  82. Brutimus Bumus

Kind of insulting this doesn't have a million views yet 1D and Taylor Swift get millions a day. Great songwriting seems to be lost don't you think

+Tommy Lauder on her BEST day Taylor Swift couldn't even write a song that's HALF as good as this.

    Beta Factor

The best things in life, and especially in art are never gonna be as popular as the somewhat mediocre ones. If something is unique it will pretty much by definition be disliked by many, whereas something that's as generic as possible (but potentially not bad from a technical point of view) has the least chance to contain something a large percentage of people would find undesirable.

    Day Man

What sort of rambling nonsense was that, Beta? I feel dumber for having read your comment.
Coca Cola is unique as fuck and it's loved globally. Elvis was unique. Prince was unique. MJ was unique. Your stoned ramblings make literally no sense. Go clean your bong or something.

    this is not great songwriting

  95. lamp-post girl

I think i was about 14, 15 when i heard this song, played it on repeat when i was on a looooong flight to see my grandpa who was in a coma in ICU, and i remember interpreting "take the pieces and build them up to the sky" as some sort of prayer, but it was simply too late. So yeah.... this song always bring up some heavy memories for me, but also how much i cherish my relationship with my grandpa. Almost 10 years now and i still miss him loads, esp when i see some old gent carrying a nice pen in their shirt pocket
