Better Than Ezra - A Lifetime Lyrics
Allie woke up 8AM
Graduation day.
Got into a car,
And crashed along the way.
Stole the urn while they
Looked away,
And drove to the beach
'Cause I knew you'd want it
That way.
And you were standing
On the hood of the car
Singing out loud
When the sun came up.
And I know I wasn't right,
But it felt so good.
And your mother didn't mind,
Like I thought she would.
And that REM song was playing
In my mind.
And three and a half minutes
Felt like a lifetime
It felt like a lifetime
And you move like water
I could drown in you.
And I fell so deep once,
Till you pulled me through
You would tell me
"No one is allowed to be so proud
They never reach out
When they're giving up."
And I know I wasn't right,
But it felt so good.
And your mother didn't mind,
Like I thought she would.
And that REM song was playing
In my mind.
And three and a half minutes
Felt like a lifetime
Are you sitting in the lights?
Or combing your hair again,
And talking in rhymes?
Are you sitting in the lights?
When I got home, heard the phone,
Your parents had arrived.
And your dad set his jaw
Your mom just smiled and sighed.
But they left soon
And I went to my room.
Played that disc that you'd given me,
And I shut my eyes
Swear I could hear the sea.
When we were standing
On the hood of your car
Singing out loud when the sun came up.
And I know I wasn't right,
But it felt so good.
And your mother didn't mind,
Like I thought she would.
And that REM song was playing
In my mind.
And three and a half minutes,
Three and a half minutes,
Felt like a lifetime.

Better Than Ezra A Lifetime Comments
I remember hearing this on the radio in the summer of 2005. Reminds me of that summer.
I'm in tears listening to this after yet another person in my life goes too soon. I first heard this song the day after my grandfather died while standing in a JCPenney store and I had to download it. I had no idea it would become such a symbol in my life.
I like this version
2:07 - 2:26 favorite part! amazing progression!
I love this song
this song originally appeared on the previous album, closer. why they released it again idk but its a great song
It has a different sound in the original album.
Kevin once said it was re-released because after they released it the first time, the record label they were signed to went bankrupt. They thought the song was a good one, so they re-recorded and released it again.
My band and myself played this at my best friends funeral, and everyone was in tears clapping, i was balling my eyes out singing it, and all I could do is smile, her sister played the bass in her place, it was a good way to honor her, and keep the faith that she gave me for a lifetime....
Such a sad song
rem your promises
I think we've all lived those moments , sometimes when I close my eyes I see that girl dancing on the hood , though it's been fourty years !

The R.E.M he is referencing is 'A Perfect Circle'
Allan Selman can you explain a little more about how that cause I still don't understand.

I heard it was Everybody Hurts, which would be more fitting and possibly explain standing on the hood of a car
@Andy Shick Kevin Griffin confirmed it was "Perfect Circle" which is exactly three and a half minutes long, "Everybody Hurts" is much longer. Also I like it much better this way, he chose a R.E.M. song that meant something personal to him. While "Everybody Hurts" is a beautiful song, it's also very well-known, too obvious, and that would be kind of meh, I think.
Fitting
Better Than Ezra - this song is a personal memoir to a girl we knew in high school... a really *sniff* great girl, that... sorry, just hits home after all this time... that really just yearned for simplicity. Just give her some 90s alt, a cold beer, and a spot on the beach, and she'd light up like solar flare man. We knew that at the end all she'd want is to be back in that water, and damn it if she earned anything it was eternity.
