Berlin - Masquerade Lyrics

The painted faces on the street
Caricatures of long ago
Oh they were young and oh so sweet
Down beyond the boulevard
Knock on doors and empty halls
And still sometimes remember
The masquerade's forever

When you see the price they paid
I'm sure you'll come and join the masquerade

The reeling figures pass on by
Like ghosts in some forgotten play
Beneath the black and empty sky
Music plays and figures dance
With partners chosen by chance
And still some times remember
The masquerade's forever

They reached for tomorrow
But tomorrows, more of the same
So they reached for tomorrow
But tomorrow never came

When you hear the price they paid
I'm sure you'll come and join the masquerade

One by one and two by two
Past eight by tens in shattered frames
The players try to leave the room
Frantic puppets on a string
And all the while the music sings
And still sometimes remember
The masquerade's forever

Terri in the green filter towards the end is one of the prettiest sights I've ever seen.

  5. R.... W....

Terri ROCKS ( still...their new album is great and I'm so glad they're touring :)

  6. d.... ....

I prefer the version found on the Perfect Soundtrack in 85/86. Less synth, high energy & without the sultry vocals. The soft original version would not work well in an aerobics class. I have the soundtrack on an old ass cassette. Horrible quality.- but i can't throw it away b.c it's the only way i can listen to it. If someone out there knows how to find the bouncy version that played in the movie please share. Please!

  7. J.... C....

    m.... 8....

Perhaps because most new wave bands were live rock bands at their core. You can play them live and all are rock songs. Sound cool rock without the keyboards. They happened to use basic drums guitars , bass... AND synths.

I was born in 1967 and worked in the record stores in the 80s and 90s. I was ADDICTED to MTV when I was a teenager. I could tell you the shifts of the VJ's and when I started to work in the record stores, I knew the goddamn record labels for the acts (because MTV would list them). I can say with certainty that if I had to pick ONE band/person/act that sums up the 80s musically, would unequivocally be Berlin. They had the sound, the look and the sleek, understated cool no one else had.

    C.... J....

And Berlin had a smoking hot lead singer which didn't hurt, either.

    C.... J....

And Berlin had a smoking hot lead singer which didn't hurt, either.

    C.... J....

Nina Blackwood, the witchy gypsy weirdo who never wore shoes, was always on at 2AM while the rest were on during the morning, afternoon, evening, and early night shifts.

    C.... J....

    Martha Quinn

  53. A.... R....

Ultravox goes to Hollywood!!! great tune

  54. H.... ....

I dreamnt this song last night, I was 18yrs old again, on Melrose Ave at Aron's Records, 1983 I think it was by some stuff in the dream, this was playing while looking at ALBUMS, joking, dancing with friends...damn. Almost cried when I woke up and it was just a dream.

  55. S.... G....

80s was the best for muzix

  59. K.... B....

Terr Nunn was their best !!!! Don't forget how hot she was !!!!!!!

  60. K.... B....

Seen the live like 5 times !!!

  61. u.... ....

Pleasure Victim on cassette gave this young Marine s-u-c-h consolation back in the mid 80s. It was sanity in a mad, mad, mad world......

  62. B.... E....

    love it

  63. P.... W....

Marvelous song, band, singer and time.

  64. D.... M....

Bought this cassette tape in 1985 and my little brother said they're cool.

He has never been so right...Yuge fan since '85. Damn I miss the 80's.

  65. d.... w....

when you see the price they pay (the general public who gets fucked over their whole lives), im sure youll come and join the masquerade (the freemasons, the O.T.O., discordians, illuminati, etc etc).......that seems to be the vibe I catch from this dark, dark song.

    d.... w....

To me, it's about forgetting your cares and getting on the dance floor... where you can become who you want to be. Join the Masquerade...

    d.... w....

@BlueBurro922 when I try to see it that way, its just not happening for me. the lyrics have a dehumanizing tonality, in my opinion.

    d.... w....

Different strokes for different folks. You probably listen to stuff that doesn't light my candle, so, it's all good. By the way, what's O.T.O.?

    d.... w....

@BlueBurro922 ordo templi orientis. similar to freemasonry, but actually permits females in their organization. but similar connections, scope, ambitions. Crowley was involved with them.

    d.... w....

if it was 'when you see the price YOU pay, im sure youll come ENJOY masquerade'  instead of 'when you see the price THEY pay, im sure youll come and JOIN the masquerade'............ to me, it just seems to have a cult-ish vibe to it.

  66. d.... w....

martikas cover is WAY better than than terri. objectively speaking.

  67. C.... S....

    entered Billboard Sept 24, 1983 ..reached #82

  68. T.... C....

  70. P.... D....

My favourite Berlin song! Love everything about this song, the beat, vocal, synth, bass, guitar.......... One of the great 80's songs!

    P.... D....

    all of it

    P.... D....

To this day, Berlin's PLEASURE VICTIM is still one of my favorite albums from the early 80s. That "euro sound" throughout the album is what did it for me. A simply amazing album! :)

  71. p.... k....

    gorgeous terri

  72. e.... v....

All i can imagine is john travolta and jamie lee curtis pelvic thursting

  73. A.... ....

    The metro inside masquerade 1:03.

  74. j.... 6....

I love the heavy metal tone the guitar player gets with those sparsely laced power chords. it meshes well with the synthpop sound.

  75. B.... ....

    "the masquerades forever..."

    B.... ....

I really dig the syncopation of the girl with the paddleball, knocks me out every time...

  76. R.... E....

Excellent tune!!! Racked up the 3rd highest score on "Gorf" at the arcade in '82, while this was playing over the sound system......great times:)

    R.... E....

Making it to Space General in Gorf to the tune of this. If that doesn't define 80's then I don't know what does.

    R.... E....

Cool! believe it or not I just saw Berlin and Terri Nunn this past Tuesday night. She still looks and sounds great!!! Check them out on tour if you can:)

    R.... E....

John Franks , I saw Berlin 4 times in the 80's, when Berlin was still Berlin_-------------------Berlin without John and David and Ric is not Berlin, sorry

    R.... E....

I hear you, I know the old saying is "you can never go home"....but I saw Terri on a TV special and I thought she said that her and John were back together writing some new material and to stay tuned!!! We'll see :)

    R.... E....

Racine Evans man I forgot all about Gorf!

  77. W.... V....

Why didn't this track get rotated on MTV? It's a total hit.

    W.... V....

I think it did get shown, just not very much.  In fact, I remember the "heat-sensitive photography" effect, because no other music video at the time had it.

    W.... V....

It did get MTV play. As did "The Metro". Quite a bit actually!

  78. T.... ....

One of the best albums ever! I never saw this video, thanks so much for sharing!

  79. T.... T....

Am I the only guy who thinks 80's music was incredibly sophisticated?

    T.... T....

It was an interesting time. Pop music was still shallow. What was and is termed "alternative" ahhhh, my bliss. I graduated in 1985, and by 1989 the music had changed enough I missed the early 80's. I find the alternative music scene in the '80's, '90, and beyond really what I listen to.

Remember, this was the era of the second British invasion; many bands in the UK had devloped the sound that was really popular here in the US at that time. Worth every second living in this era.

    T.... T....

Tiki Tavi no sir you're not, I think so to 👍

    T.... T....

No, Tavi Tavi you are not. Have a great day!

    T.... T....

    80-85 only.after,nothing

    T.... T....

Youre the only faggot here that is trying to stick out in an attempt to pick up women on youtube lol

  80. A.... D....

I had one of those spinning light things!

  81. k.... ....

    1 big masquerade----she nails it

  82. M.... H....

Jamie Lee Curtis dances to this in 1985 PERFECT movie

    M.... H....

+Mark Harrington That was one of those moments where movie and song really came together. I'm thinking of buying that movie on disc. I saw the last part of it on cable, but I'd kind of just like to own it.

    M.... H....

@Johnny Cade I agree with you 100%. Back in 2007 I was in jail sentenced to a year, did a bit more than 6 months, but they wouldn't let us exercise, we'd go a month without being let out in the yard. And then I couldn't even run, I had put on 40 lbs. from meals & commissary. Long story just a little bit longer, for 3 years after jail between 2007-8, until 2010 I just kept putting on weight. Then I began an exercise program and lost about 65 lbs. I became a gym rat doing mostly cardiovascular exercises. I was doing mini-marathons, burning up to 2700 calories in a 2 hr. 40 min. workouts. For me the movie is perfect because it's a romance and it's centered on aerobics. It didn't mean anything to me when I saw it in the 80's, but now it ROCKS! It's my life!!

    M.... H....

@TrustInJesus111 Congrats, Dude. Life imitates Art here. Hope you've kept it going....

    M.... H....

It was a Mark Chapman remix, with a more guitar sound.

  83. M.... T....

Great Song Every Time I DJ I Play This Song . People Love This Song But They Dont Know Why . Why It's Great Top 100 Songs Of All Time For Me Its  Number #21 Thank You I know every song from 1963 to 2006 Top Notch Treri Call Me I Can Help

  84. f.... ....

I grew up during the 1980s and found most of the music horrible.  This is great song.

    f.... ....

+flesherWI 60's and 70's for me, I think we had it a bit better.

    f.... ....

Some of the music was very good and some was not so good.

  85. C.... A....

Terri is a rock legend right up there with all the best, period.   Same with Dale Bozzio.

    C.... A....

    @Corey Andrew Both are great.

    C.... A....

+Corey Andrew we have to add Martha Davis of The Motels TO THE LIST! Xd

    C.... A....

    @DR. HOUSE M.D.
I agree. Martha Davis was great, and put
a lot of emotion in her voice.

  87. k.... ....

The lyrics to this song are actually quite sad. They pay tribute to all of the people who tried and never made it in the entertainment industry. "They reached for tomorrow, but tomorrow never came."

    k.... ....

That's pretty cool. I always thought this song was about misspent youth and faking it as an adult. Makes a bit more sense when you apply the lyrics to the entertainment industry though.

  88. t.... n....

    80s yo-yo @ 1:06 lol

    t.... n....

    +timed noyb

    It's not a yo-yo, it's an op yop. I still have one. :)

  89. A.... ....

Think of Jamie Lee Curtis' picture 'Perfect' body in the film co-starring John Travolta and Marilu Henner.

  90. e.... g....

they dont make music like this anymore

  91. P.... K....

Terri Nunn really belted this song out.  Amazing!!

    P.... K....

It's her personal favorite of the band's songs

  92. D.... C....

    Another fun cruising song

  93. E.... C....

    LOL, guilty pleasure!

  94. b.... c....

terri was so cute, love her music...she really did it for me back then.

  95. C.... M....

Did the post 1980's media finally move on and beyond continually portraying the entire decade long"new wave" era scene as a joke? These same media idiots, who after the fact, made a living bashing 2 of the 80's biggest musical cultures (new wave and heavy metal) coincidentally also made a living $$$ during the era riding on the coattails of the mega popularity of the 80's musical sounds

  96. s.... ....

Makes me want to put on my parachute pants and brake dance on down to the arcade to play a mean game of frogger

  97. U.... ....

This is like a more artful Taylor Swift, with a band possessing a soul, 35 years prior.

    U.... ....

@UVaphobia Child please! Taylor Swift could not compare to Terri! Are you joking?

    U.... ....

True. And I am no child, just trying to relate to this sad thing we call The Present. It is astounding how much passion and artistic ability we have lost as a species in the last 20~30 years. If this song came out in 2015... it would be THE song of 2015! Back then it just flew under the radar... I think (I was like 4).

    U.... ....

@UVaphobia LOL! The term "child please" is like saying 'are you kidding'?" Not being disrespectful. :)

    U.... ....

Terrie the Queen !!!! And way hotter than Taylor...

    U.... ....

    Don't insult Berlin like that.

  98. J.... G....

Love this song.  It's really deep if you get it.

  99. M.... R....

    Beneath a black and empty sky . . .
