Bennett, Tony - Where Do You Start Lyrics

Where do you start?
How do you separate the present from the past?
How do you deal with all the things you thought
Would last that didn’t last?

With bits of memories scattered here and there
I look around and don’t know where to start

Which books are yours?
Which tapes and dreams belong to you and which are mine?

Our lives are tangled like the branches
Of a vine that intertwine

So many habits that we’ll have to break
And yesterdays we’ll have to take apart

One day there’ll be a song or something in the air again
To catch me by surprise and you’ll be there again
A moment in what might have been

Where do you start?
Do you allow yourself a little time to cry?
Or do you close your eyes and kiss it all goodbye?
I guess you try

And though I don’t know where
And don’t know when
I’ll find myself in love again

I promise there will always be
A little place no on will see
A tiny part within my heart
That stays in love with you

"Where do you start, how do you separate the present from the past, how do you deal with all the things you thought would last, but didn't last,With bits of memories scattered here and there, I look around and don't know where to start.  Which books are yours, which tapes and dreams belong to you and which are mine?  Our lives are tangled like the branches of a vine that intertwine,
So many habits that we’ll have to break and yesterdays we’ll have to take apart.
Br:  One day there’ll be a song or something in the air again, to catch me by surprise and you’ll be there again, a moment in, what might have been,
Where do you start?  Do you allow yourself a little time to cry?  Or do you close your eyes and kiss it all goodbye?  I guess you try,
And though I don’t know where and don’t know when I’ll find myself in love again, I promise there will always be a little place no on will see, a tiny part deep in my heart that stays in love with you."      (OUCH!!  Lyrics like only the Bergmans can do and music by Johnny Mandel.)

" WHERE DO YOU START", BY JOHNNY MANDEL , ( ALAN AND MARILYN BERGMAN) .
    VERY NICE! PRAISE TO YOU, TO MANDEL,TO A. & M. BERGMAN, FROM ( BIL . H. STORK).

  3. m.... s....

Trumpeter Jack Sheldon sings a good version of this song ! 🎤 🎹 🎵

  4. m.... s....

Tony Bennett is Just about one of the last of the saloon singers left from the 1950's ! 🎤. 🎻 🎻 🎻 🎹 🎺 🎵

  5. M.... ....

Wonderful. But I have to raise a cheer for Rosemary Clooney, who also sang this song beautifully, full with bittersweet regret and that inimitable Clooney warmth.

  6. R.... N....

    The last great American singer!!!

  7. P.... B....

To me, Tony is the last great interpreter of the American Songbook. And Johnny Mandel is a great songwriter, of course. But, he's more than that. Johnny is the greatest arranger/orchestrator for strings in the second half of the twentieth century and into this one, I believe.

Add to that the great lyrics of Marilyn and Alan Bergman and the great musicianship of the instrumentalists here, and musical transcendence happens. So poignant. So beautiful. So deeply meaningful.

  8. 1.... ....

This blows me away.  Tony nailed it.

  9. R.... C....

What a depressing song after the break up, but very beautiful

  10. L.... M....

    A treasure!

  11. L.... S....

Tony Bennett knocks me out on his version.  This man is probably the best song interpreter around.

  12. B.... P....

Truly moving ... but have you heard Nancy LaMott on this? Perfection!

  13. A.... M....

12 people didn't like this? How shameful!

  14. T.... H....

This is beautiful, but I too really love Shirley Horn's version - I once heard Carmen McRae perform this live in Perugia, Italy in an ancient, roofless cathedral - and it blew me away. So sad it was, so sad it still is...

  15. L.... ....

Babs sing this song pretty well.

  16. L.... B....

Well...I thought no one could top Shirley Horn's version. But this is just as good. And distinctly Bennett.

    L.... B....

Yes a tie and that's quite a fete.

    L.... B....

I was thinking the very same thing.

  17. M.... ....

You might hava a listen to Kenny Colman's version....

  18. R.... C....

Here is the promise delivered. From an awkward boy singing in 1952 to a half a century later and this.

  19. B.... J....

The only versions of this song belong to Tony and Shirley Horn!  Love them both !

    B.... J....

@KentuckyJet Did your mother tell you that you were old fashionned when you were a child?
"I hear babies crying, I watch them grow, They'll learn much more than I'll never know", said Louis Armstrong in What a wonderful world.
It must be hard to be taught by a child of 5 years old.

    B.... J....

I prefer Joe Francis or Kenny Rankin's version, they were the definitive versions. This is mediocre compared to the aforementioned sorry to have to say.

    B.... J....

And Johnny Mandel (still alive and performing in his 92nd year) arranged BOTH versions -- Shirley's and Tony's. Small wonder we love them best. (I am serious, and stop calling me Shirley -- Frank Drebbin)

    B.... J....

I cringed when you called Tony Bennett mediocre . I have heard both Joe Francis' version and Kenny Rankin's.Joe has what we use to call a band singer's voice . Great voice but no emotion. No one beats Mr Bennett for telling a story with his voice. I saw Tony a couple of years ago. He still has it. Rest in peace Ms Horne. I was in Wash D C in 1960 and dropped into a little club call the Brass Rail. There was Shirley and her small but enraptured audience. Everyone holding their breath. Kenny Rankin , what can I say? He doesn't even stay with the melody. Granted this is a difficult song to sing.. But he does show emotion I'll give him that. But everyone to their liking. But I'll stick with Tony , have been since 1951 with Blue Velvet.

    B.... J....

    you bore me

  20. N.... J....

I love Shirley, Barbra and Jack Sheldon versions.

    N.... J....

    Oh yes .... Sheldon.

  21. T.... ....

Anything by Mr. Bennett is wonderful, but, this version is best performed by Shirley Horn.

    T.... ....

Shirley Horn...Tony Bennett did this each in his/her own way but neither is better.  They are both showing what is possible.  Wonderful timber of the two voices and a delivery they care about and so must you.  neither would ever claim to having done it better.  they might say you don't find a score much better than this.

    T.... ....

Jack Jones does this the very best, Tony is so awesome what a gift to the world...but this song JJ is supreme .

    T.... ....

    Kenny Rankin

    T.... ....

    That's a subjective observation.

  22. V.... S....

this is great but the best version of this song will always belong to Nancy LaMott

  23. H.... ....

    Incredible performance!!! The Best!!!

  24. A.... S....

this song breaks my heart in two when I hear it...

  25. D.... B....

I met Tony Bennett once in Kansas City. He was extremely nice to me in that I made the mistake of visiting with him before his performance. I treasure Tony Bennett's way with a song. His two albums with Bill Evans are at the very height of musical love and language building, totally immersing us in the wisdom of his star being talent and heart. Thank you Tony Bennett for saving my life. Love ,David

  26. S.... ....

Mais uma linda canção da famosa dupla Alan & Marilyn Bergman, com um arranjo musical magnifico de Johnny Mandel e uma impecável performance de Tony Bennett. Este álbum é realmente maravilhoso e um dos melhores do Tony.

  27. e.... p....

don't write them like this any more

  28. P.... S....

A Wonderful song by a wonderful composer with beautiful lyrics (as always) by Alan & Maralyn Bergman.

  29. R.... B....

Two of my favorite lyricists, one of my favorite composers, and one of my favorite singers - and a completely gorgeous, heart-wrenching song and arrangement. This is one of those redeeming features of a culture which seems to have so much crudity and ugliness in it. It's good to be alive just to hear something this wonderful.

    R.... B....

    +Roger Bissell
Rodger Just saw your wonderful comments. They express my own feelings about the survival of excellence amidst the clamour and puerile of today's pop scene. It's ironic that one of Bennett;s best albunes is The Art OF eXCELLENCE."

  30. N.... B....

And though I don't know where and don't know when
I'll find myself in love again
I promise there will always be a little place no one will see
A tiny part deep in my heart that stays in love with you.

I always think of those lyrics as the big emotional payoff in this song. They are woven so perfectly with the music.

    N.... B....

Love, love this song.  I cry each time I hear it, especially Shirley Horn's verson.  My husband died 4 years ago and the song brings back so many memories.

    N.... B....

@toni edwards Love is so absolutely beautiful that it can break your heart. I know what you are saying because I also think of people who I miss so much.
I agree that Shirley's version is the best. Another song on that album that bowls me over is "Quietly There." Pain of a breakup and bad communication.

    Noe Berengena
This lyric, final in the song, makes my heart weep. Combined with the stunning melody, what more can a song offer...

  31. R.... K....

Oh, my.  So beautifully sung, with deep but controlled emotion; and a great arrangement.

  32. K.... ....

I wonder why America's DJs do not give this song by il Maestro any air time at all. Its a very excellent song!

    KentuckyJet
Because you need a decent jazz station who will play good music like the one where I first heard Where Do You Start.
(In Los Angeles broadcast from California State University at Long Beach, KJAZZ 88.1.)

  33. W.... D....

One of the most beautiful versions you can ever find !

This version was arranged and conducted by the composer himself, the wonderful Johnny Mandel !
