Benatar, Pat - I'm Gonna Follow You Lyrics

I'm gonna follow you, 'til I wear you down
I'm gonna follow you, 'cause this here's my town
You don't know these streets the way that I do (I do, I do)
You can't turn it on and off the way that I do (I do, I do)
Ooo, ooo...

I'm gonna follow you, 'til I know your timing
You'll turn some corner soon, and find you can't get by me
You don't know these streets the way that I do (I do, I do)
You can't turn it on and off the way that I do (I do, I do)

You see yourself as some kind of lily of the valley
You come around here in your ballet slippers padding on my alley
And you know that you can't dance
'Cause you know you never had the chance
I'm gonna dance for you!

Ooo, ooo...

I'm gonna follow you, 'til I wear you down
I'm gonna follow you, 'cause this here's my town
You don't know these streets the way that I do (I do, I do)
You can't turn it on and off the way that I do (I do, I do)

You see yourself as some kind of lily of the valley
You come around here in your ballet slippers padding on my alley
And you know that you can't dance
'Cause you know you never had the chance
I'm gonna dance for you!

Ooo, ooo...

Benatar, Pat I'm Gonna Follow You Comments
  1. c.... ....

A group of artists and producers need to start a Rockers Hall of Fame to give the RRHOF some competition since they have forgotten what is a "rock" band and "rock" music is and how many of thsee bands were a commercial success and have been snubbed by the POP/RAP RRHOF.

  2. c.... ....

    Pats early albums were awesome.

  3. M.... W....

Neil's badass licks make this song

  4. A.... M....

    Both haunting and mesmerizing. amjmetaltomotown

  5. J.... L....

Pat Benatar is truly one of a kind. Here she shows her seductive side with this underrated song that is skillfully accompanied by Neil's sublime and ethereal-sounding guitar riffs.

  6. K.... B....

MTV QUEEN! Rock n roll hall of fame bound. About damn time!

  7. a.... ....

Wow!! Great song, guitar, todays crap can't compare!

  8. G.... D....

She can follow me any time.........…..

  9. G.... T....

Can't remember if this song is actually a cover, originally by a male vocalist, and might not have been the biggest hit for the original artist(s?) Not the hit, at least, that it was for her. I happen to believe it was originally a rather tertiary song for an act that did have otherwise pretty big hits.

  10. J.... D....

    I forgot about this one...dark n smokey...

  11. T.... M....

    What an awesome voice !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  12. B.... B....

    Vote.rockhall.com. Come on people vote!!

  13. S.... ....

She is the queen: I think she is quite possibly the greatest female rock star in history (can think of no one better or who had more hits/ great songs/ talent).

  14. V.... ....

Most memorable song on the "Crimes of Passion" album. After the one about Child abuse ...

  15. T.... M....

Get Thee behind Pat, Satanic Lady Blah Blah and Satanic Shittnie Spears

  19. T.... M....

    Fu$# Lady Ga Blah!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  20. T.... M....

A song that should be played every day on all rock radio stations all over the world. Pat kicks nalgas !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  21. a.... ....

I love the *mood* of this song...
Really gripping and should have been a hit but
it didn't even chart. The video still holds up well!
    Thanks for posting this!

  22. A.... F....

    💋💋DAMN WOMON💋💋

  23. D.... S....

I'm not bragging (well okay just a little bit)... when I lived in Milwaukee, WI a friends band opened for Pat Benatar so of course I went backstage. I sat on a couch talking to Pat and Neil one on each side of me - I guess I should have been more nervous but I wasn't. I actually gave her my first original solo cassette (datz a CD to you younger folks) to listen to at her leisure. She never called, " Bitch!!" lol, just kidding.

  24. J.... B....

This is the first video I ever remember seeing on MTV. Always loved Pat Benatar!

  25. J.... K....

"You see yourself as some kind of Lily of the Valley." Until Breaking Bad, that made no sense to me.

  26. s.... b....

“You don’t know these streets like I do” Gangsta!

  27. J.... P....

Great song. All the way through, a great song. Benatar and her attitude make the whole thing work. But the guitar, especially at the end....wow that's what makes this song a great one.

  28. D.... M....

I loved this song. Early days MTV didn't have a lot of videos so this one got HEAVY rotation & I was 1000% okay with that🙂

  29. R.... ....

....MAAAN , I am gay as gay can BE, but even I can-NOT get over whatta smokin' HOT BABE Pat was, at this time! She KNEW it too; she styled HERSELF for this Video, so the dress, the earrings, the leather pants / tights, the makeup...ALL done by MISS PAT! My FAVE part is when 'Rock' Pat telepathically tells 'Disco' Pat, this here corner is HERS now, and BEAT IT! ....then, the 'Disco' Pat slinks off, pouty-lipped and all! ( starts at 2:11)

AND, Pat was the 'Face' of MTV, when they started....Pat was EVERYWHERE,and EVERYTIME on MTV; and she NEVER gets credit for it....Madonna may have made MTV explode, but Pat was what MTV strived to BE....ROCK and Vision!

THIS Chick DESERVES to be in The Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame; Stevie Nicks FINALLY got in, for her Solo 80's work, why isn't Pat?! and her Man (Neil Giraldo) deserves honorable mention; HE'S the one shredding that damn Guitar in the middle and the end, and did almost ALL of Pat's production work!! It's TIME, Y'all, or I'm gonna FOLLOW you! > : )

  30. T.... M....

A song that should be played every day on rock radio stations !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  31. g.... m....

simple video - pat looks hot and works it works - one of my favorites

  32. B.... J....

    She is sooo hot.

  33. T.... M....

    Awesome voice and singer....................

  34. T.... M....

Pat, you can follow me anywhere !!!!!!!!

  35. O.... ....

    just love

  36. K.... E....

    Luscious 💋💋💋💋💋🆒 Smoke up 🎶🎸🎸tokin

  37. T.... M....

    Cause this here's my town...................

  38. T.... M....

A song that should be played on modern rock radio stations, fu%# modern day "music".

  39. T.... M....

Alpha female singing here. Pat kicks nalgas. She can follow me anytime and anywhere. Awesome voice!!!!!!!!

  40. X.... r....

    Good for the 80s yey🤣

  41. L.... L....

I haven't heard this since I was 11 always loved this song

  42. K.... E....

Hot..as Hell. Wow Smooth song... Fire up a Doob 1980 style 🍭🍭🍭

    K.... E....

I think you're the last person on earth to call it a 'doob'..... besides me, that is.

  43. D.... C....

    Such a powerful voice!

  44. J.... B....

I used to work in that area great video !

  45. T.... ....

Uncle Joey and Dean Delray sent me!

  46. D.... O....

I'm very happy to have found this video, which until now I never knew existed.
Great song, one of the few not directly addressing romance or its aftereffects.
The one thing about it that doesn't work is that dreadful, Awful makeup.
I don't think I ever saw anything that garish in real life in the 1980s,
but then I've never been to some of the places where it might have been seen.

  47. m.... g....

Pat , what a hottie talent , Joe, her hubby pure talent! One great combo. Wish we could live those days back in time again

  48. V.... ....

Probably the next best song on her second album ...

    V.... ....

The intro sounds a Little like Abba on "Eagle". But just a Little ...

  49. D.... A....

    sensational

  50. J.... L....

love the verses and the guitar but the changes to the faster tempo kinda fucks it up. The " you see yourself as s0ome kind of lilly of the valley.....ballet slippers in the alley...." part just doesn't go with the rest. Would have been a great song without that.

  51. s.... B....

omg the make-up lol. She's awesome tho

  52. S.... ....

This is my favorite PB song! But....she does look like a praying mantis.

  53. F.... J....

Fantastic song. I could've made a better video with twenty bucks.

    F.... J....

First you'd have to hire someone as hot and talented as Pat. I think you'll need more than twenty bucks.

  54. D.... L....

    Listening in 2019, fantastic song

  55. R.... B....

Great track from bk in the day 🎶

  56. J.... S....

    she is so fine !!!

  57. E.... ....

  66. E.... H....

    thats right children...
this was when rock n roll really mattered...
    when rocker chicks ruled too...!
and they made a video for every song..!
these videos made MTV a house hold name.
rainey friday nights , good buds, good friends , your girl and MTV..!

  67. E.... M....

Ok. Go ahead and follow me.. I'm a great leader.. And I'm looking for a leader like you! Together we could conquer the universe..
    : )

  68. T.... ....

Turns out that a *lot* of great bands and solo artists (including Pat Benatar) benefitted from doing covers from the band Billy Thermal, the band that originally wrote "I'm Gonna Follow You".

  69. B.... ....

one of my all time favs

  70. B.... M....

Pat, we've been following YOU ever since.
    Love you long time.

  71. t.... a....

    A 1980's timepiece!!

  72. b.... ....

Early video, before MTV. I saw in on HBO video jukebox. Most if not all the videos from that era were cheesy....

  73. H.... J....

A very fine example of the feline spieces prrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

  74. s.... i....

Hey Pat... where you goin' ?  You goin' trollin'?

  75. C.... T....

This video is horrible but the song is great..not Pats fault

    C.... T....

I think the video's actually pretty good. Her fading in and out of shadow, and that quiet street scene at the end, set to the music, are visually perfect. Simple and effective. Another video I thought was very good was Fleetwood Mac's GYPSY. No special effects, just dancing and simple visuals. It took nothing away from the song; indeed, it ENHANCED it.

But that was how it was at the time. It was the MUSIC that was dominant, enhancing the video. Within just a couple of years, it was the video that became the focus, with the quality of the music predictably suffering. THAT'S where MTV went off the rails and began to slide into mediocrity - so badly they had to resort to game shows and lame sitcoms, 'reality shows', and cartoons to survive.

MTV was the architect of its own failure, right from the beginning.

  76. C.... L....

Be careful...That’s called Stalking and you can be arrested for that these days. 🤣

    C.... L....

Cricket Lee..we call it.. intense surveillance👀

  77. D.... S....

Seductive and powerful in only the way Benetar can deliver

  78. D.... S....

    Those lips!

  79. B.... ....

Fun fact--that neon lighted tunnel she walks in was the exact same one used by Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam for their Head to Toe video!

    B.... ....

Ive been trying to locate this tunnel and the locations used in NYC for this video for years! Any idea whee tunnel and others are located?

  80. O.... S....

    my. idol. amazing. .......

  81. n.... ....

Pat Benatar is a Hall of Fame worthy rock singer, no question...but Neil Giraldo makes these songs come to life. He's so underrated as a guitarist..

    n.... ....

    Neil is a God....no question.

    n.... ....

nockanoo62 ... It's Neil's arrangement and production where his true magic sparkles

    n.... ....

    Indeed💯

  82. G.... S....

Someone should remake this with a modern twist - would be a hit.

    G.... S....

    Gary Shanks
    Oh no.............

    G.... S....

Ummmm....NO. Should someone 'remake' the Mona Lisa with a new twist? Or the Sistine Chapel? This song, sung by Pat, is a product of its time and is best left alone.

  83. J.... D....

I've always loved everything by her, and Crimes of Passion is my favorite of her albums. Did you know that she was the 1st female artist to appear on MTV? I was even more surprised to learn that her real name is Patricia Mae Andzejewski. No wonder she changed it. Beautiful voice and a beautiful lady - great video!

    J.... D....

Yep, I remember too, this video was the 2nd music video to come on MTV! Pat Benatar is the queen of Rock! I luv her so much, I do a lot of karokee to just about all her best shot jams. I named my first born after her husband, Neil.aka, Spider! Just saying!😉💜! She will go down in history as a class act! Bravo Pat!👍✌😙

    J.... D....

I think her 1st husbands name was Benatar.

    J.... D....

  90. N.... M....

    her style is genius ♡

    N.... M....

Niki M'nray the effect she had on my 14 yo brain!

  91. P.... ....

A little trivia pertaining to the radio play comment below. This video was the 30th video played when MTV first aired. "You Better Run" was the 2nd video played. A lot of folks chose to play vids on MTV verse radio, as more peeps were watching MTV. Worked for Def Leppard.

  92. y.... ....

She can follow ME....  Dance for me, Pat...

  93. g.... ....

One of those songs that had a video but received no radio play! (At least none that I ever heard!) Regardless, one of my absolute favorites of hers! One of Neil's best in my opinion! The perfect mix of moodiness and power!

    g.... ....

gremmiehodad this was a cover- the original was sung by a guy-

    g.... ....

    My thoughts EXACTLY!!! MTV

    g.... ....

its one of my fav songs of all time.

    g.... ....

Yes it's a cover but Spider adds his own licks and makes it better

    g.... ....

It got radio airplay for about a month where I lived, and then it was gone. It did see quite a bit more play on MTV and some 'overnight' teevee channels.

  94. A.... S....

I never knew they made a video for this song. WOW! Arguably the most underrated song of the Benatar catalog.

    A.... S....

Huh same here. Thought I saw all of her videos. I don't ever remember seeing this ever, til just now. Nice surprise.

    A.... S....

    she have terrible songs

    A.... S....

MTV used to play it all the time when they played videos. It was awesome.

    A.... S....

Dino go back to listening to 21 pilots and other garbage, kid

    A.... S....

@Valerie Gardner One of the earliest videos on MTV!

  95. z.... ....

This is a cover.. The original was done by L.A. new wave band called Billy Thermal.

    z.... ....

+Daniel Rampazzo "No you Don't." Steve Priest (Bass player) sang that one. One of my favorites of theirs.

    z.... ....

Daniel Rampazzo I Need A Lover was written by John Cougar Mellencamp.

    z.... ....

"If You Think You Know How to Love Me" is a Smokie cover. She covered the Beatle's "Helter Skelter." Half the songs on True Love are covers.

    z.... ....

Daniel Rampazzo, it’s “Don’t Let It Show”, from Allan Parsons’ Project

    z.... ....

That band included an eventually VERY unobscured songwriter named Billy Steinberg. I put both versions in my Benatar playlist.

  96. K.... K....

One of my favorite Benatar tunes ever. I remember watching this video when it first came out, not long after MTV's inception. The guitar always stood out in this song. I loved how they let it play both in the middle and then at the end. No song by a female artist would do that now. Great video.

    K.... K....

It was song 30 of the first 30 music videos played on MTV. I don't remember hearing this song but it's a good one.

    K.... K....

That's some interesting trivia; could I verify that somehow? "I don't remember hearing this song...but it's a good one." You don't remember it when? that night? so who told you and how reliable is him or her?

    K.... K....

This DEFINITELY is one of the vids shown on MTV during its first 24 hours on the air--a few years ago, someone had the original entire first 24 hours of MTV on his channel (ads and all), and this vid was included.  (The whole channel was unfortunately closed when Viacom found out, those d-bags)!

    K.... K....

@Annette Ayotte Pickmyname is correct. The startup of MTV had been announced well in advance of its going on the air, and it was literally a party at a friends house to see it go live. I can not recall if this song was actually #30 or not, but it WAS played that night.

  97. P.... ....

@inspectorcritic Damn dude or dudette!! Lay off the spice & bath salts would ya?? That stuff is dangerous!!

  98. P.... ....

Thank you for posting such a high quality video of one of the best female rock vocalists ever--in my opinion she is part of an exclusive group that include Ann Wilson of Heart, Martha Davis of the Motels, Chrissie Hynde of The Pretenders and (rock/blues queen of them all): ETTA JAMES.  period.

    P.... ....

I have too much respect of others to say that there's this exclusive group of singers. Turns me off of checking out Etta, Martha too, you being so narrow. May you hear a song today, let it cut you to the marrow.

    P.... ....

He said in his opinion. Geesh.......

    P.... ....

Puffingirl1 :. YESSSSSS... don't forget about Barbara Streisand.. Amen
