Ben Rector - The Men That Drive Me Places Lyrics

Howard drives a minivan to the cruise ships from Fort Lauderdale
And it's been that way since 1994
Does his business on a flip phone with the most obnoxious ringtone
I didn't ask, but I can tell he's from New York
He spoke proudly of his daughter and that this fall she'd be in college
And that he always wished he'd gotten his degree
You can tell he came from nothing, built a future out of hustling
And somehow I'm the one you people pay to see

Oh isn't that just the way it goes
You're dealt a good hand and you get celebrated
Oh, how am I the only one who knows
I'm half the man of the men who drive me places

Danny showed up early, fifteen minutes till five thirty
Making sure that I'd be on my morning flight
He said he'd love to fix computers, but that he can't until he's fluent
So he spends his driving money taking class at night
He wore a neatly ironed dress shirt, and he helps his kids with homework
Deep inside I couldn't help but ask myself
Why that at night I'm up on stage, everybody knows my name
While Danny's early picking up somebody else

Oh isn't that just the way it goes
You're dealt a good hand and you get celebrated
Oh, how am I the only one who knows
I'm half the man of the men that drive me places

And now everything's not given, I work hard to make a living
I'll give credit where I think the credit's due
Maybe you got dealt a good hand
Maybe you play it the best that you can
But I don't know how far you'd walk without those cards
In Howard and Danny's working shoes

But that's just the way it goes
You're dealt a good hand and you get celebrated
Oh, how am I the only one who knows
I'm half the man of the men that drive me places

My Dad has been in the taxi business since the early 90s. I was born in 1997, so he's been working as a taxi driver longer than I've been born. He came from Hungary as an immigrant and has been taking on any job he can get without higher education. I was crying listening to this, given that this song is about those who are drivers, especially the part where it goes "and he spoke proudly of his daughter and that this fall she'd be in college..." because he tells me a lot that he speaks about me to his customers a lot with what I'm doing academically. He has always worked long hours dealing with every type of customers, nice and rude, and giving me what he can give. He's always been the one to give me his last penny, the one to help me when I needed emotional help even when he's tired, the one who's always just been there for me regardless. I've been his priority always. I'm the first one on his side of the family who got their college degree just recently and I keep reminding him that without him, I wouldn't have done it. I'm fulfilling what he couldn't do. I love him and without him, I wouldn't have been the woman I am today. Here's to hard working Fathers who would do anything for their kids just to see them be successful and happy. I'm proud of you, Dad ❤ And I will give him everything I can give as his only kid.

He sounds so much like Anthony Ramos and this song is pure beauty. Anthony's voice is the only voice besides my mothers that can calm me down from crying or a panic attack when singing, and it sounds so much like him, it's perfect. When he sings "Oh how am I the only one who knows I'm half the man of the men that drive me places", it's so passionate and it calms me down so much and even takes away physical pain like when I'm feeling sick this song makes me feel so much better practically instantly. ❤❤️️❤️

  37. J.... N....

this song makes me think of my father and my mother. It's so weird how a piece of paper determines what one should earn

    J.... N....

    +John Narum indeed.

    J.... N....

    John Narum preach🙏🏻

    J.... N....

It's not the piece of paper itself. It's what the paper represents. The initiative. The motivation. The commitment. The skills. The education. The drive. The hard work. The effort. The work.
It shows how hard someone wanted to earn that paper, and that that paper means they've learned everything they need to do to get the hard shit done that not any monkey can do.
I'm not trying to talk down to those that don't go to college, as I'm 21 and haven't gone myself, but that doesn't mean I don't believe it's important.

  38. K.... B....

  47. D.... L....

I just started college a week ago, and I wouldn't be here if it weren't for my dad. He didn't grow up with much and didn't go to college. He moved to the US from South Africa and worked hard, started his own business and did manual labor every day. He always told me how important college was and he always pushed me to do my best with whatever I did. I never realized how right he was until now. And I never fully appreciated how hard he worked and how much he has done for me before listening to this song. He is such a good man, he taught me to always seek out knowledge and never give up. I don't think I've cried in over 5 or 6 years. But after hearing this song I just lost it and had to call him sobbing like crazy. A song has never made me feel this way before. This is amazing. I saw a posters for Ben Rector around my campus saying he would be preforming here in a few weeks. I'm so glad I looked him up. I hope I get to meet him and thank him.

    D.... L....
