Ben Folds - The Ascent Of Stan Lyrics

Pangs of silence
From the room upstairs
How's the view there?
Do you read what they're saying about you?
That you're no fun
Since the war was won
In fact, you have become all of the things you've always run away from

The ascent of Stan
Textbook hippie man
Get rest while you can

So where'd the years go?
All the time we had?
Being poor was not such a drag in hindsight
And you wonder why your father was so resigned
Now you don't wonder any more

The ascent of Stan
Textbook hippie man
Textbook hippie man
Get rest while you can

Stan: Once you wanted revolution
Stan: Now you're the institution
Stan: How's it feel to be the man?
It's no fun to be the man

And now, watch it all go down

The ascent of Stan
Textbook hippie man
(Stan)
Textbook hippie man
Get rest while you can

Stan: Once you wanted revolution
Stan: Now you're the institution
Stan: How's it feel to be the man?

It's no fun to be the man

    Is this an Eminem reference.

After hearing this amazing song, this put me in the mind of the scene from RWBY where the team did the one thing that they bashed Ozpin for earlier in the 6th Volume; force upon the situation for the greater good. Not gonna lie, I honestly hope that the next volume of the show, would have them realized what they've become

  9. N.... B....

Fucking beautiful, NW all the way.

  16. G.... C....

This song makes me not want to grow up

  17. i.... ....

is no one else hearing a banjo in the background of that bridge?

    i.... ....

Of course other people can hear it.

  18. C.... K....

Google and Facebook in a nutshell. Those that used to be outsiders are now the ones crushing the little people. They've become the man. Silicon Valley has given us Bully 2.0.

  19. C.... W....

    Textbook hippie, man

  20. T.... ....

    love this so hard

"why your father was... so resigned...

    now you don't wonder any...-moooorrreee"

10/10 awesome. What an underrated album this masterpiece is.

  22. Z.... W....

    A very god song! I <3 it!

  23. f.... ....

I can't reply to flyinghamster9, but that's the deepest thing ive heard from a hamster, this song is a fucking masterpiece by the way.

  24. L.... I....

    Memories!!!!!!

  25. E.... ....

This song grew on me a lot

  26. K.... B....

The begining reminds me of Greg Laswell's Days Go On

  27. K.... ....

This reminds me of this guy that walks around my school talking to the kids, and we all call him 'Stan The Man'.

  28. f.... ....

My friend really liked this song. There were several albums that he listened to and held on to even as he shed his other possessions and eventually ended his own life. I don't know if I will ever believe in mental illness, but I believe in the beauty of the human soul.

  29. D.... ....

I'm choosing to relay the information i was given. I never commented on the validity of my friend's story. Take it for what it is and try not to lose sleep over it.

  30. A.... W....

Really? You're choosing to lie about this?

  31. D.... ....

I know Stan. Lol he showed me this song. He's a veteran. When he came back he was different. Ben wrote this for him to feel better

    D.... ....

    I know him too

  32. Q.... ....

haha ellipses are great! I got used to using them while texting and its a habit. That comment was over a year ago, but I only see closed-mindedness and rudeness, I don't see arrogance in my comment. Haven't you ever met somebody that has practiced an instrument for years and still can't play it proficiently at all? Or haven't you met somebody who can't tell the difference between a C and an E#? They're out there, and it's unfortunate, but those people won't be able to play music very well.

  33. P.... ....

Calm it down with the ellipses, hon

  34. P.... ....

Oh lordy! I thought you were joking at first. Your arrogance made my day, but it most likely ruined someone else's. I really want to see what you look like. Bwahhahahahha

  35. A.... H....

    Such a poignant song!

  36. Z.... M....

    Good logic there Nietzsche

  37. s.... ....

If there's no suffering,no symptomes, and no way to be aware of the existence of some illness, then that illness don't exist.

  38. A.... S....

    so no, you don't.

  39. N.... ....

The real hopeless victims of mental illness are to be found among those who appear to be most normal. "Many of them are normal because they are so well adjusted to our mode of existence, because their human voice has been silenced so early in their lives, that they do not even struggle or suffer or develop symptoms as the neurotic does.

  40. R.... B....

This song makes me think of an orange sun coming out of a storm.

    R.... B....

It makes me think of The Ascent of Stan

  41. A.... S....

    jesus christ you're arrogant.

  42. A.... S....

    hindsight*

  43. A.... S....

jesus, you really have no idea what you're talking about do you? "modern money culture"?

  44. J.... ....

Stan is a guy who always rebelled against something, one day he became over himself and became what his always went against, (Was now being rebelled against) I'm not sure but I think Stan kills himself in the end or gets away from it all, after discovering what happened to him.

  45. N.... ....

    @LovePrayFashion <====== #bouhaha

  46. K.... A....

My earth space science teacher is basically the man he's talking about. He works as a heart surgeon, but took a crappy side job teaching where he can basically re-live the 70's through screaming at us about the evils of the government and how we should commune with nature. And every so often he gets this really tiered look on his face that speaks volumes. its very sad.

  47. N.... ....

great lyrics too about our soulless times, how modern money culture made a blind fool out of western society and humanity

  48. S.... I....

.. being poor wasnt such a drag in hindset.

  49. D.... M....

    Love this song

  50. A.... N....

@AlaskanGenius you are the coolest person ever! Normally I hate reading peoples comments because they ruin the song, but you are a winner!

  51. A.... ....

    @PixieLover908 I disagree. slightly.

  52. A.... ....

I didn't know this guy was so good. His a good judge on Sing-off, but this stuff is special.

  53. Q.... ....

@AlaskanGenius yeah I'm just gonna go out on a whim here and say you're 100% wrong on that statement...except for the part about the fingers and stuff...people do that

  54. A.... ....

@QuicK2800 And Drummers don't count. Anyone can play drums. Anyone with a talent for any other instrument just has to learn how to hold the variety of sticks properly and the terms for things and they can hit things at least as well as Drummers. Most of us simply do the same thing as drummers on a more micro level (fingers) rather than whole arms and legs.

    A.... ....

wait what? Anyone can play drums? Anyone can beat on something to a pulse, but to truly "play the drums"? That's a whole different thing, dude...

  55. A.... ....

@AskYourDoctorMusic More importantly, there are people that can play their music, and there are people that are no different than a midi file, that can be taught to perform an action. Thats the difference. Not so much composition so much as actually being musical. For example, I simply can't grasp.... um. well. I can't do busywork? no thats not an equivalent. Ah, I can't paint at all, even though I have been taught all the techniques and skills.

  56. M.... S....

@AskYourDoctorMusic Yes you're right, anybody can learn to play music, but not everybody can compose.

  57. B.... ....

@Ezulnic that would make sense too, I guess there could be a lot of stories, well, doesn't matter, it's a great song

  58. B.... ....

Wait, so this story is about a hippi who joins the wars, then exits as a succesful business man, but has no fun anymore, so he spends his entire life deciding whether he should be a rich business man with with no fun, or being a poor hippi who has the time of his life, and spends so much time deciding he dies of old age. That's what my older brother told me since his school's flag guard did it, if so, that is a sad yet interesting story, someone correct me if I'm wrong. Great song, Ben Folds=:)

  59. Q.... ....

@joumenpoonk Well...you see...the problem with that is alot of people just CAN'T play music...whether they're lacking knowledge, coordination, or even tone differential. I taught myself this song...I don't play piano....It's not that hard if you're actually born with musical talent. Perhaps you should find something else to be good at.
    PS. I'm a drummer.

  60. D.... ....

    two people didn't ascend

  61. Y.... ....

    @itzzXlizz01
I agree. Seriously. Whoever doesn't like this, uh... xD Needs to get a life.

  62. R.... C....

    @Zakkk7

Once I learn it, I'll probably post at least the intro in tutorial form.
I'll let you know when I do.

    R.... C....

    Robin Clower I’m still waiting

Thanks so much for putting these songs up!
