Ben Folds - Hiro's Song Lyrics
My name is Hiro I am 51
Since 1980 life has been no fun
And I don't want to die
I left my family for the secretary
She and my daughter were best friends in High School
They say I'm crazy and it's temporary
But I refuse to rot like my contemporaries
I wanna explode
In a Karaoke Supernova
I don't wanna grow old
Won't you let me, won't you let me explode
I don't wanna grow old
In a Karaoke Supernova, yeah
Last night she dressed me up in hip hop pants
The phat g-stylin rides below your ass
She wants to show me to her mom and dad
I told her I would not be down with that
Cuz lately I can feel the years between us
I hope to God my friends at work don't see us
Tonight she asked me if I've ever seen Jesus
Cuz she had backstage passes for three of us
I don't wanna grow old
Won't you let me, won't you let me explode
I don't wanna grow old
Won't you let me, won't you let me explode
In a Karaoke Supernova, yeah
So now she's gone and broke my heart goddamn her
Turns out she's been fucking this drum programmer
She likes his style, she likes his rock start glamour
Well she's an infant! He can damn well have her!
I don't wanna grow old
Won't you let me, won't you let me explode
I don't wanna grow old
Won't you let me, won't you let me explode
I don't wanna grow old
Won't you let me, won't you let me explode
I don't wanna grow old
Won't you let me, won't you let me explode
In a Karaoke Supernova

Ben Folds Hiro's Song Comments
I think most people know this by now but, for those who don't this song can essentially be considered the fan sequel to Blur's "Yuko and Hiro"
Didn't know that. Thanks man.
Ben didn't put it on the album because it didn't "flow" on Rockin the Suburbs. He did claim it was one of his favorites though. If I were an artist and had a great song that I really liked, I'd just shelve it until I found a project it felt good for, not waste it as a B-Side. If this made an album or EP I guarantee you it'd be a crowd favorite.
Thing is he didn't produce it individually, the only place it appears on is in the Ben Folds Five album: A retrospective.
Bye bye bada bing bada boom toro rosso!

This is a fuckin' Ben Folds Five song
No, this is a Ben Folds solo track from the vinyl version and the Japanese CD version of "Rocking the Suburbs"
Do you happen to have a mp3 file of this song with good quality because I don't know where to buy it. I herd it on my vinyl version of the album but couldn't find it anywhere else.
honestly? the demo version is my pick over this version
This song brings back so many memories.
@SageBazle- Um... Call me crazy, but this never comes after "The Luckiest." Unless that's how they have it on iTunes or something. On the Japanese version as well as on the vinyl version of the album, where it's tacked on as a bonus track, it comes right before the title track, "Rockin' The Suburbs." Then it goes into "Fired," and then "The Luckiest" - that track still closes out the album. Look it up if you want.
Hi, I know i'm five years late but yeah, you're right, I have the vinyl and it always comes last.
To all the people asking why he didn't think this was 'good' enough, this *was* released. This was a bonus track only available on the Japanese version of the CD, they just didn't release it outside of Japan
Yeah, but it's a bonus track. Bonus tracks are usually the equivalent of B-Side material. They're not "good enough", I suppose, to be part of the album, but they're not bad enough to entirely scrap. I'm not complaining, there's a ton of songs I love that either are somewhat obscure B-Sides by artists or songs that became A-Sides by being B-Sides (Fun Fact: "How Soon is Now?" by The Smiths and "Kung-Fu Fighting" by Carl Douglas started out as B-Side material). Also, it being a bonus track on the Japanese edition - doesn't make it entirely relevant. Remember those songs that Ben Folds put out as a fake leak for Way To Normal? The ones that are kind of intentionally terrible, like "Free Coffee Town?" About half of those are on the Japanese import of the album. The Japanese edition has "Way To Normal", "Free Coffee Town", "Frowne Song (Feeble Anthem)", and "Cologne (Piano Orchestra Version)" - all of which were songs from that earlier fake leak version, and then "Brainwashed" (Not to be confused with "Brainwascht" from the album) ended up as a B-Side on the CD single for "You Don't Know Me."
Even without that tidbit of it being on the Japanese import, this still was also technically released. It was a B-Side of a single, I think of one of the import versions of "Rockin' The Suburbs." I know I also bought a promo EP called "Special B-Sides" that was an official release that has this, "One Down", "The Secret Life of Morgan Davis", and "Make Me Mommy" (For some reason, he didn't include "Girl", the other B-Side of this era, and I had to buy a copy of the single that was on). So people saying "Why was this unreleased?" are kind of missing that it was released about three times over. And then a Demo version was on Best Imitation of Myself and a live version on Songs For Goldfish. This is obviously the fan favorite B-Side, kind of like Queen and the song "I Go Crazy." For whatever reason, it was left off an album and has become a major hit with the band's fanbase. Same with this.
I don't why he didn't think this was good enough to release.
Ben isn't doing the same thing as Kesha. Ben's stuff isn't marketed in a way that makes it spread like like wildfire; but people are still appreciating it 20 years later in healthy numbers. The kind of stuff that gets a hundred million of views on Youtube definitely brings in a lot of people, but those people are likely to forget about it in a couple of months. It's a very different kind of fame. (I'm making a massive generalisation about Kesha because I don't know anything about her. Sorry!)
MY NAME IS WILLO AND IM 51 SINCE 1980 LIFE HAS BEEN NO FUN AND I, IIIIIIII DON'T HAVE A CALCULATOR
That is because intelligent people just listen to music, not write "lol dis iz wikid"
This could be the best song in the world
When I saw him live he played this using only his voice and a shaker. It still sounded freaking awesome!!
that recording is available on one of his vault albums!
@Cheeseburgerwoof or maybe you just need to put a credit card on there for the extra cent
I have this song in my "Rockin' The Suburbs" CD. hehe
This is my absolute favorite. Ben rocks.
I wish I had this song on iTunes so i wouldn't have to keep going to youtube.com. I have 98 cents. I'm not kidding. I need another 10 dollar iTunes card for an extra penny.
One person thinks life has been fun since 1980.
@hklinker
You're right, that's too harsh on WTN and it is just my opinion. WTN has several really good songs; I was just disappointed with it overall. I guess I'm into Ben's "story" songs a lot.
Plus, I realized I still have over half the album in my iPod frequent play list (the Colognes, Effington, Frowne Song, You Don't Know Me, Errant Dog, Free Coffee). It may be my least favorite Ben album, but it's still higher on my list than just about any other artist's.
@TheNCBob
It is not twice as good as anything on WTN.
You just don't like WTN.
It's good for you that you like Lonely Avenue.
One of my favorites. It says something about poor Way To Normal, though. This song was cut from the same cloth; like WTN songs, it's quirky and offbeat with a sort of "F-You" vibe. However, it's twice as good as any song on WTN, yet didn't make the cut for Rockin' The Suburbs. Thank goodness Lonely Avenue was a return to form!
oh man, you and I have the same taste. I loved everything BF put out before 2002. WTN was a disaster for my money. And Lonely Avenue had some really good songs, the one about Palin's boyfriend being my favorite
@3sonkeys Agree on Losing Lisa, but disagree a lot with both of you on Carrying Cathy. Dang that's a serious tearjerker, and sort of poetic in my opinion. C'mon man, her window was hung like a picture frame! She was sinking into the dark after he closed the door! I also love the baseline; reminds me of Norwegian Wood somehow. Great stuff.
@3sonkeys carrying cathy is "ok" but it kinda falls in the same category as fired and losing lisa, after seeing ben folds live 6 times i have never heard him play either of those three songs live
Fired? You kidding, that is one of his best songs on any album
Wow I have only heard the live version. The way he sings here is much better, the song sounds more like it's telling a story.
I love this song!!! Why wasnt it on the album?
Why is there one other comment? I bet every K$sha song has atleast 1,000. The world is backwards.
