Ben Folds Five - Where's Summer B.? Lyrics
I'd like to tell you, like to tell you
Tell you everything
'Cause nothing changes, ever changes
Nothing seems the same these days
Just sits at home and beats back death
And Beth still wears his stupid dress
There goes Joe Caparo again
With Darren's girlfriend
They're asking where ya been, like I know
Where ya been? Hey Summer, where ya been?
I tried to tell you, tried to tell you
Just took a bit too long
And your shit's out on the lawn
The hardback cafe closed down
Now we've got Office Town
You shoulda stuck around
There go Ross and Frank again
They're holding hands
They're asking where ya been
Like I know where ya been
Hey Summer, where ya been?
I could take a train or fly away
Maybe write a book or change my name
I could settle down

Ben Folds Five Where's Summer B.? Comments
The song is dedicated to a young woman named Summer Burkes, who was a huge fan. She passed from cancer, and the band wrote this song for her.
Thanks. Always wondered why it was called Summer B.

The opening notes on the bass going from open E then chromatically A, Bb, B sounds fantastic. I don't know why but the song Public Image by ex-Sex Pistol John Lydon's then new outfit Public Image has a similar bass line introduction that goes from open E to B on the 7th fret of the E string - same vibe and also just as uplifting!

Beyonce..drake and crew.Obama..seduction..
hell yeah.
I'd like to tell you
Like to tell you
Tell you everything
Cause nothing changes
Ever changes
Doesn't seem the same these days
Dave's been a mess since Cheryl left
Just sits at home
And beats back death
And Beth still wears that
Stupid dress
There goes Joe Caparo again
With Darren's girl friend
They're asking where you been
Like I know
Where ya been
Hey Summer, where ya been?
I tried to tell you
Tried to tell you
Took a little bit too long
And now your phone
Is disconnected
And your shit's out on the lawn
The Hardback Cafe closed down
Now we've got Office Town
You should have stuck around 'cause
There goes Ross and Frank again
They're holding hands
They're asking where ya been
Like I know
Where ya been
Hey Summer, where ya been?
I could take a train
Or fly away
Maybe write a book
And change my name
I could settle down
There goes Joe Caparo again
Hey, that's Darren's girlfriend!
There's Ross and Frank
They're holding hands
They've been asking where ya been
Hey Summer, where ya been?
I'll smoke a bowl with Caleb
We'll fly away or settle down
But
Hey, hey Summer, where ya been?
Another stellar example of the music box of joy that is Ben Folds. Every song is a standout, this is an exceptional example. To know Ben is to love Ben, aren't we fortunate to have him.
Ben is Awesome!!! Summer B is a Ben Folds 5 Classic
Definitely
If only more people wrote music with this much care still. Most music nowadays feels less like music and more of what corporate calls a "song". Sure not all modern music is like that but most of what charts is.
love this song.. seriously fantastic
This song just almost makes me wanna cry...I love it! It feels like being a kid in the 70's..
This was released in the 90s....
Sounds like a Todd Rundgren tune...love it..
Def some brilliant work
Great song but dammit... I caught myself thinking it was John Travolta circa Grease singing and now I can't get it out of my head.
this is a little hidden gem on the youtubes. only 62k views and the comments section has been in neutral for a year. Such a feel good song.
Man this just oozes style.
completely agree (3 years later)
Favorite song from this album. Ben & the gang rock!
Im so pumped for the new album on tuesday! all the new tracks i've heard are fantastic. I especially like Do It Anyway
Played this song at bonnaroo
That's what I meant. I actually bought the album when it first came out, and that's what amazed me..how somebody that YOUNG had the kind of feel for "back-in-the-day" music that he did...and still does.
he recorded this when he was way younger dude
@tommyrock69 ???
A really sweet song, maybe the sweetest of all of his.
As wonderful as the lyrics and progressions are in this song, for me it's Robert and Darren that really make it a classic. Their harmonies play against the piano, bass, and Ben's voice absolutely perfectly in this piece. One of my favourites.
The album that got me hooked x3
I will never know how a guy Ben Folds' age got the chops to write like this, but thank GAWD he does!
my favorite Ben Folds song
Joe Caparo was in my band that is typical too.
@Staggerbaroque it's one of the most underrated albums
Sweet!!
Thanks for the post. This song brings back a lot of good memories.
