Ben Folds Five - On Being Frank Lyrics

I had it all, or should I say I saw it all?
And it's a long way from the dustbin of New Jersey to the top
Who would have known?
Who would have known

I had a dream, but dreams had other plans for me
For 30 years I set the thermostat
Where Frank Sinatra liked it,
And old his girl hands on his hats
I never knew which one were mine
Now he's gone, and I'm alone

And I don't know where I might be going
I heard the wind, the wind stopped blowing
Set me on the roadside from the house
But how, for me was always someone else you know
That shadows always fall, when the sun goes down

I shook the hands, a few dames and presidents
And though they always smile politely
With a measure of decorum
Still their eyes would stare beyond me
For a glimpse of something more
But now he's gone,
Now they're gone

And I don't know where I might be going
I heard the wind, the wind stopped blowing
Set me on the roadside from the house
But how, for me was always someone else you know
That shadows always fall, when the sun goes down

Alone, is shadow of a star, don't you know
That shadows always fall, yeah shadows always fall,
When the sun goes down
And I don't know where I might be going

I heard the wind, the wind stopped blowing
Set me on the roadside from the house
But how, for me was always someone else to go

Ben Folds Five On Being Frank Comments
  1. R.... T....

Reviews say this song is about Frank himself, but it seems to be about one of his bodyguards/assistants/hangers-on, perhaps Hank Sanicola, Jilly Rizzo or George Jacobs.

Clearly Folds is in character as someone, and the character is referring to Sinatra and his feats in second person.

    R.... T....

Furthermore, Frank's longtime valet George Jacobs, who probably has more Sinatra stories than anyone who ever lived, passed away around the same time this album was released.

    *_who would've know_*

  3. J.... C....

Does he preform this song live?

  4. r.... ....

Whoo! Those lyrics are maybe a bit off-target in spots, like all over. Funny thing about TSOTLOTM -- Ben declined to include lyrics, so I guess the lyrics are whatever you want them to be...

  5. D.... Z....

I am a big BFF fan.. traveled to SFC to see them many years ago.. and to Missoula to see them with BNL and Guster...

  6. N.... P....

It's definitely "Mafia dons and presidents"

  7. s.... ....

    What do you mean?

  8. N.... C....

You monetize these videos just for posting up bff's music?

<3 this song... and I've noticed a lot of lyric sites have some pretty weird interpretations, so here are mine:

"((Pulled?)) his girls, hung his hats"
"I rode the wind, the wind stopped blowing
Set me on the roadside thumbing home"
"I shook the hands of mafia dons and presidents"
    "With a measure of decorum"
"Alone... in the shadow of a star"

  10. m.... ....

and it's Decorum not 'the core'.

  11. s.... ....

I shook the hands of Mafia dons and presidents... not a few dames

  12. s.... ....

thank you these lyrics are from a website so I didn't really read them over

  13. M.... ....

Maybe I'm wrong, but it sounds like the lyric is "But home... for me was always someone else..." Makes a lot more sense than "but how"

I liked this even thought it has only 2k views

Does this song owe a debt to Boxing ?

The imagined point of view of a guy who served Frank Sinatra after Boxing's imagined conversation between Muhammad Ali and Howard Cosell.

    h.... ....

I like the Cossell-Ali reference. Definitely fitting. Cossell seemed to die a little each day as Ali's Parkinsons advanced.

This song is definitely from the POV of someone serving Sinatra. A bodyguard or hanger on of some kind. I don't know why the reviews insist it from Sinatra's POV. Frank's long time driver George Jacobs passed away around the time this album was released. Of course Jilly Rizzo and Hank Sanicola were famous Sinatra sidekicks, too.
