Ben Folds Five - Evaporated Lyrics

What I've kept with me
And what I've thrown away
And where the hell I've ended up
On this glary random day
Were the things I really cared about
Just left along the way
For being too pent up and proud
Woke up way too late
Feeling hung over and old
And the sun was shining bright
And I walked barefoot down the road
Started thing about my old man
It seems that all men
Wanna get into a car and go
Anywhere
Here I stand--sad & free
I can't cry and I can't see
What I've done
God...What have I done
So don't you know I'm numb, man
No I don't feel a thing at all
Cause its all smiles & business these days
and I am indifferent to the loss
I've faith that there's a soul
whose leading me around
I wonder if she knows
Which way is down...
I poured my heart out
I poured my heart out
it evaporated...see?

Blind man on a canyon's edge
of a Panoramic scene
Or maybe I'm a kite
That's flying high & random
Dangling a string
Or slumped over in a vacant room
Head on a stranger's knee
I'm sure back home
They think I've lost my mind.

Ben Folds Five Evaporated Comments
  1. R.... E....

Whatever and Ever Amen may be the best album, as a whole - of all time. It's certainly my favorite, has been since it came out, probably always will be.

  2. J.... O....

    Peak Ben Folds right here.

  3. V.... B....

    👍 thanx guys

  4. T.... G....

    Dawson's Creek brought me here.

  5. K.... B....

This album definitely helped me get through a tough breakup when it first came out. I wore the tape out pretty good. That being said, it truly is one of the most well written and performed melancholy songs ever recorded in my opinion. When life punches you in the dick and throat, and it will, several times, this song and others really help to cope with the pain and overwhelming confusion. The power of music. Thanks, Ben.

  6. S.... ....

I first heard this album in '96, at the lowest point of my life. I was in a doomed relationship with a bipolar manic depressive ("she's a brick and I'm drowning slowly") who loved Ben Folds Five. 20 something years later, I can finally listen to this album again, but back then, it was too much, too heartbreaking. ESPECIALLY this song. I was seriously stagnating in my life, hating myself and "My God, what have I done??" summed it up a little too accurately....

    S.... ....

this album was released in 1997

    S.... ....

Hey well your passed that shit now, have a drink or a smoke or whatever, and blast Ben folds and have a good time.

  8. M.... M....

The guy in the up-pick looks like hillel slovack :'(

  9. b.... ....

I love a LOT of songs, I love a LOT of the songs on this record. This song is something special. "Maybe there's a soul somewhere who's leading me around. I wonder if she knows which way is down...." Genius. My favourite band is the Dillinger Escape Plan for context :)

    b.... ....

Ben Folds, Mike Patton, and Dillinger? Holy Fuck

  10. u.... ....

Songs like this have a timeless quality that I can keep coming back to when life goes in directions that leave me feeling exactly where the song is coming from. A few days ago the woman Was in love with broke up with me. And that just so happened to occur on the eleventh of September, a mere footnote that just the bitter cherry on top of a salty cake

  11. H.... F....

"Maybe I'm a kite that's flying high and random dangling a string..."

  12. B.... L....

I'm 67 years old and a lover of lyrics. When I discovered Ben Folds , via my son, I realised there was more than my old stand by's Jackson Browne, Joni Mitchell, James Taylor, Warren Zevon, Mark Germino etc. I'm born again. Even went to a Ben Folds concert.

    B.... L....

Awesome! Love James Taylor. Ben Folds is great!!!!

    B.... L....

Barry Lamb - saw them at the SF Fillmore, a small intimate venue. i was only a few feet from ben pounding that piano. the experience was ecstasy.

    B.... L....

    That's awesome Barry.

    B.... L....

Barry Lamb fortunately there is still great music, unfortunately it's not on the radio like back in your day when radio was still awesome. There is a lot of great music these days. Unfortunately you have to dig for it

  13. C.... C....

  21. A.... B....

The most beautiful but sad song ever written....

  22. K.... B....

This song randomly popped into my head yesterday as I was sitting at the park with my 6wk old son Ben. 17 years on and I still love it!

  23. G.... ....

Love it. It also catapults my mind to that time...kind of sad and bittersweet things have changed so much in the world.

  24. .... ....

One of the best song for the universe

    .... ....

    한국인 ㅠ 감격이네여

  25. J.... P....

How do only 372 people like this song...including me? Ben Folds Five is one of the most underrated bands of that time. I lived by Whatever and Ever Amen for the last two years of high school, and I still revert back to it whenever I am feeling some self searching. What an incredible time, what an incredible band. Forever and ever Amen.

    J.... P....

+Jane Panich Love it.. I LOVE this song..

    J.... P....

This was one of the first albums that really spoke to me beginning to end. Totally agree that I come back to it any time I want to feel that connection and get back to my roots.

    J.... P....

    I feel the same way.

  26. M.... ....

"I can't cry, and I can't see, what I've done, Ow god, what have I done"!

  27. J.... ....

regular car reviews where are you

  28. T.... B....

Never noticed 5:24 ! I'll have to listen back to my copy of whatever and ever.

    T.... B....

Only the first pressing of the CD has the hidden track, so your copy may not.

  29. t.... ....

Oh, God. What have I done?

  30. P.... H....

    See?
That one word spoken just breaks me.

  31. c.... ....

    Right in the feels.

  32. B.... T....

    Ben Fold's vocals are awesome...!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  33. C.... T....

lyrically, i would say it's one of the best songs ever written.

  34. A.... A....

    It evaporated... see?

  35. J.... A....

im sure back home they think I lost my mind.

  36. D.... ....

not to sound all elitist and shit, but i listen to a shit ton of music and fancy myself a fairly informed ear (also i play 4 instruments and produce), and i have to say that evaporated by ben folds five is one of my favorite songs ever.  just about as beautiful as it gets.

    D.... ....

And the lyrics are actually written well too!

    D.... ....

for beauty, one of the best I've ever heard is the Cure. They've produced some achingly beautiful songs (and not the pop ones you heard on the radio or saw on tv).

    D.... ....

+Decibel Official It tears me apart. Stunning. Awful. Beautiful.

    D.... ....

    Decibel I completely agree.

    D.... ....

Got any recommendations for other "favorite songs ever" that I should listen to?

  37. O.... P....

Their songs are simply...brilliant. So well-written with meaning and expression. Beautiful.

  38. T.... ....

I poured my heart out. It evaporated. See....

  39. J.... P....

5:25 made me laugh so hard. Great song.

  40. s.... ....

    Kills me.

  41. S.... A....

    5:25 ???

  42. H.... M....

Or slumped over in a vacant room, head on stranger's knee......

  43. t.... ....

I connect with this realising my youth is gone. I thought I messed things up with mates, relationships, career. Then suddenly: I haven't done anything worthwhile yet! A tale of a sudden realisation of mortality and a need for self worth. Very deep song indeed.

  44. W.... M....

    Hidden track at 5:24

  45. L.... H....

As for the "What I've done?" the sentence is in 2 lines "And I can't see what I've done" he does this weird puasing sometimes check out "Cigarette"

  46. L.... H....

Ben Folds does this weird thing where he makes himself a mirror and you listen and try to get inside his head and all you see is yourself

  47. p.... ....

@SeventhOne87 I get the impression that Folds just makes unintentional bad mistakes with relationships, hence why he sings "what I've done?", or doesn't realise what he's got when he has it. You can see this a lot in his songs, especially with the lyrics. (He's on his 4th marriage now- and hopefully last and most fufilling). But you are damn right, his grooves are the best! :D

  48. E.... ....

@chrisbowen194 Take note now and remedy what you don't like......the time only seems to go faster and faster....

  49. S.... ....

    @SeventhOne87 -_-

  50. G.... R....

I bet this album is awesome on vinyl

  51. E.... P....

    @swimmingboulder

Selfless, cold, and composed is a good breakup song too.

  52. n.... ....

This song always reminds me of about 11 years ago when we were young and inseperable. Now we've all grown up, started new lives, and as sad as it sounds I seem to be one of the only ones that hasn't forgotten how to use a phone, or send an email.

  53. C.... M....

this song is so great, it has a really bittersweet sense

  54. s.... ....

Yeah, I listened to this a lot after I caught my fiancee cheating on me. Tore me apart but Ben helped me through.

  55. s.... ....

Best of luck. Life is full of pain and hard times. The important thing is to continue to strive. Cheers, mate.

  56. C.... ....

    hopefully you do.....good luck

  57. Z.... ....

One of my all time favourite songs.

  58. a.... ....

reminds me of when I took a year off of college, got in a huge fight with my room mate and moved back home. I listened to this a lot back then.

  59. Z.... ....

    Love this.
