Ben E. King - Dance With Me Lyrics

Dance with me...
Dance with me...
Dance with me...
Dance with me...

Dance with me
Oh...Hold me closer, closer and closer
Much closer
While the music plays
Mmm...darling dance with me
Oh...hold me tighter tighter and tighter
Much tighter while the rhythm sways

Mmm...put your lips to mine
While the music plays
We're no longer strangers
Now we're more them friends

Dance with me, dance with me
Closer, closer and closer
And maybe we'll be lovers
When the music ends

Dance with me, dance with me
Closer, closer and closer
And maybe we'll be lovers
When the music ends
Darling won't you please
Darling won't you please
Darling won't you please

On this day in 1959 {December 3rd} the Drifters performed "Dance With Me" on the Dick Clark ABC-TV weekday-afternoon program, 'American Bandstand'...
At the time "Dance With Me" was at #15 on Billboard's Top 100, that would also be it's peak position on the chart, and it also spent fifteen weeks on the Top 100...
It peaked at #2 {for 2 weeks} on November 9th, 1959 on Billboard's Hot R&B Sides chart, the two records that kept it out of the top spot were "So Many Ways" by Brook Benton and "Don't You Know" by Della Reese...
And on the same 'Bandstand' show they also performed "Dance With Me's" B-side, "(If You Cry)True Love, True Love", it reached #5 on the Hot R&B Sides chart and #33 on the Top 100 chart...
Between 1954 and 1966 the NYC-based group had thirty-six Top 100 records; five made the Top 10 with one reaching #1, "Save the Last Dance for Me", for three weeks in 1960...
Besides "Save the Last Dance for Me", their four other Top 10 records were "There Goes My Baby" {#2* for 1 week in 1959}, "Up On The Roof" {#5 in 1963}, "On Broadway" {#9 in 1963}, and "Under The Boardwalk" {#4 in 1964}...
    * The week "There Goes My Baby" peaked at #2, the #1 record for that week was "A Big Hunk O Love" by Elvis...

    g.... b....

+g bridgman whatever makes ya ears happy, ya heart, ya soul, ya all. anyway take care be good but most of all, be Happy

    g.... b....

This is a nice, typical Drifters tune, but IMHO, it doesn't compare to "Amor", which is one of his great solo renditions, recorded after he drifted away from The Drifters.

    g.... b....

@Egbert Souce Ben E King's recording of Amor is fabulous. I love it.

    g.... b....

Amor is fabulous. And "Young boy blues"

  59. A.... R....

My Father claims to have written this song in the 50s. He said that he recorded song at a local  radio station in the Caribbean and the next thing he knows is the Drifters singing the song on the radio. I have  seen a copy of his lyrics which says "Do Do Dance with me"." Do Do" in Caribbean Island talk means sweet heart. The Drifters lyrics says Dit dit dit dit dit .

    A.... R....

Tried to make sense out of your comment but difficult to follow?   The Drifters at their best!       "Dance With Me"

    A.... R....

+Abdon Ramdass I do want to believe you, not that I don't. Blame the white executives for the theft.

    A.... R....

A Classic , I saw them at a Murray the K Show in NYC in the 60's . It seemed every time they came back for a show they had a new lead singer ???

  62. R.... D....

What great music cramped into 3 minutes due to the technology of the day.  The Drifters with Ben E. King made great music.  To bad they were limited to the short time per the media to perform.

  63. W.... R....

...Everybody...join in on the WEXF radio festivities...57 years on the air

    F.... ....

Music made sense. Made you feel happy!

  72. D.... H....

Someone who has no sense of r&b/soul, and who probably would take Herman's Hermits over Ben E. King & the Drifters!@#@

  73. E.... W....

Mamauana chhakchhuak ditto.... It's such a great feeling....brings back wonderful memories.....

  76. j.... s....

The rest of the world, well the UK anyway held the Drifters in high esteem, they appeared in Liverpool clubs during the 70's and 80's on a regular basis, I should imagine other cities were hosts to them too.

  77. S.... ....

I was lucky to attend a concert and dance of the "Drifters" in Albuquerque in 1960! Wow those were fun times! I'm glad to see that younger people are enjoying this music!

  78. S.... ....

This video has a dislike????? Someone needs a shot of rhythm and blues and a swift kick is the ass.

  79. G.... ....

Im going 29, and love to listen to 50-70'ies music, since I grew up with that playing on my parents LP-player!

  89. a.... ....

Conjure-up the image of that "special someone" from long ago, from another time. Let your memory take you back... and there you are. Entwine your arms around your one-and-only, as you glide through the crowd... you're there again, and the Drifters are singing -- everything that was perfect is just so again!

  90. C.... C....

Wow I remember dancing to this song in the early 60's!!

and btw the Drifters totally own the Platters

  97. S.... ....

@schwarzfalk No. They don't have a best hit. They have best hitS, they were masters and you can't pick a single best, only the ten best.
